Markbass knows that some bassists need more than 1000W of power. That's why the SD 1200 bass amp head was created. Headroom is all about having more power than you normally need, and this mighty amplifier will allow any bass player in any band to hold their own, no matter how big the stage or how loud the band. The Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator (VLE) and Variable Preshape Filter (VPF) allow access to a wide array of timbres, from classic tones to modern hi-fi. The Markbass amp head's sound is exceptionally warm and clear even at full volume, providing ultrafast response and unparalleled reproduction of the most minute details of your playing.

You cannot miss with this one! Exceptionally clean, really fast tonality that can dial in everything from an open vintage growl to a tight modern thump to crisply detailed slap and everything in between. The controls remain simple yet allow you to really customize the tone that you want to hear, it's really astounding actually. It actually took me a few days to dial in my sound because there are so many really musical bass tones "dial-in-able", and the VLE & VPF actually do what the manufacturer claims, which floored me honestly. Paired with a 2nd tier 4x10 cab running at 750 W @ 8 ohms this thing packs a wallop; tight and funky with plenty of transient expression but still delivers the booty, son! I have a 5 string active J-bass and play hip-hop and the tone I got right now has plenty of bounce and snap, I love this thing. On the back is the direct output which has a volume knob on the front of the amp, a pre & post eq send switch, 2 neutrik outputs so you could connect 2 8ohm cabs and wreck, and the tuner output which happens to be the only negative thing I can say about the amp. The tuner output on 2 out of 2 units for me was broken. I still give it 5 stars cause it's light as a feather and really delivers clean tone at high volume, which to me is what I'm paying for.
The previous reviews are all correct in my opinion, I just want to expand on the VLE function a little more as it's my favorite part of the amp. Basically, the more you crank this knob, the farther back in time you go. Crank it hard to get a Sabbath late 60s super low thud, or simply add a little to basically de-modernize your sound. It's a very cool function I haven't seen on any other amp. The other great feature about the amp is it's weight. It's the supermodel of bass amps, you can pick it up with one finger and a thumb. How they get 1200 watts out of a feather weight amp defies nature. Lastly I can tell you I have a rental company and nothing gets abused more than rental gear. This head has yet to go to the repair shop and has been abused for 2 years now. What ends up in our shop most which our tech won't even work on are Ampeg SVT 3s and 4s. In my opinion, this head is a much better choice at every level.
I finally found a bass head dependable and tight. I started with the MB II and found myself pushing it to the max to be heard over 2 guitars and a drummer for 2 years. Now they want me to turn down. Loud or not this head is clean and flexable. I have been using the head for a month now with a four 10 cab and a 18 cab. The head is set to maybe 3 or 4 on a 10 scale for volume. If I had to suggest anything it would be built in compression.
