This handsome little cube, the Markbass New York 604, is a great compact speaker for bassists on the go and with 4x6" speakers and 600W of power handling it's the ideal extension cabinet for the Minimark or similar combos.
I've dug Markbass Heads for some time but have an amp I really like at the moment. What I did need was a cab to give me a better range of frequencies and I tend to go with unconventional gear, not the usual 10's or 15's or the usual mass produced amps. My rig right now consists of a Sansamp RBI preamp and a Stewart World 1.2 Power amp (1 rack space, 11lbs, 1000 watts bridged @ 4 ohms), a Dr. Bass 112LF cab (500 watts @ 8 ohms, 35lbs) and my new Marksbass NY604. My old Epiphone Les Paul Std bass never sounded better with this set up. My bands style is Punk influenced Hard Rock (AC/DC, Stooges, Dictators. The Cult) and I try to do my best Cliff Williams, rock solid and no loss of bottom. I'm the only guy I know to really use 12's for bass which I love and when I saw the NY604 figured I'd give it a try to see if it would match up with my Dr. Bass 112LF cab and make my sound better. I was immediately impressed with the bottom end and punch that this cab has and it didn't take long for me to run home and round up a bunch of gear gathering dust in my house to trade toward this cab. I brought it home and hooked it up to my amp and fell in love with it. The next night @ practice, my band mates couldn't say enough about the sound of that cab paired with my 112. I recorded recently with the NY604 and my Ampeg SVT-CL and the results were awesome. Played my first show with that set up and the other bands bass player who I let use my cabs couldn't say enough good things about that set up paired with his old Acoustic 220 head. I like the horn, not a ton of high end but enough to make upper register notes stand out and 600 watts is a lot of power handling for such a small cab. The rear ports are a nice touch and really helps fill a room with your sound when the cab is against a wall. It's very solid and seemingly very well built. My back loves it's 33lb weight and I've been able to reach my goal of powerful, light weight bass gear. I really hate carpet covering and you see a lot of high priced cabs covered with it but the stuff they use seems to be better quality than most companies use. How bout bed-liner or something like it on future models?? So far, neither of my cats has discovered this cab. That's the only negative with this cab and it's a really small negative. I do a lot of research on gear before I spend money and this cab is seriously worth every penny. The only reason I'd get rid of it is to get NY804 cab. Markbass stuff is awesome!!!
I've been pretty suspect about the whole Markbass thing for quite awhile yet interested in the NY 604 cab at the same time. I happened into a Guitar Center store in Albuquerque that just happened to have the NY604 and the 800 tube head in stock so I finally got a change to try them out and I ended up leaving the store with them...hopefully that says it all. In case not, I've played about 4 or 5 gigs with the rig so far and I'm really liking both pieces. Great sound, great features and flexibility, and super portable. The one 604 cab is probably all I would ever need for the type of gigs I do, but I may end up buying another one just for the one time a year when I need that much sound.
I'm using a 1989 gk400rb with this cab it sounds Great!!!! It doesn't need all the power you would think. PUNCHY And lots of LOWS with Highs and very Clear or Transparent tone. My 66 pbass Loves it. I work with a Horn band they are very happy with my choice.
