  • The power behind my first bass rig.

As reviewed by MATT on 10/4/2014

So, I'm a former guitarist who now plays bass. I joined a band and needed a gig worthy rig. I haven't played through much else honestly. I had my bass guitar set up and they played it through a minimark and I thought it sounded wonderful.. so a year later when it came time that I needed a real amp I went with Markbass. I started with a Little Mark Tube first. It sounded awesome but I was curious about what more headroom would feel like so I sent it back and was going to purchase the Little Mark Tube 800w. Then I started looking at the features of the MoMark system. It wasn't the fact that the amp is modular that sold me to be honest. It was the dual speakon output connections, the mute button on the front rather than by pulling the volume knob. The semi-parametric eq knobs. All in all it just seems more feature rich than the Little Mark tube series. I ordered a MoMark 800 Black to try, and found it lacked a bit of the punchiness of the 500w LMT. It sounded awesome but I was already sold on the punchiness of the 500w amp. I took the MoMark 800 back to my local GC, and tested it side by side with the Little Mark Tube 800w. To my surprise, the MoMark had a slightly cleaner and more crisp sound with the some tonal characteristics in the mids and lows as the LMT 800. Where I originally was just going to order another LMT 500w, I ended up with this badboy, the MoMark 500w. I'm not sure how it sounds side by side with the LMT 500w, but I will say this amp is very punchy in the mids. The t1m module uses a different tube than the LMT series, and while I can't be sure how different it is from the LMT 500, this thing has a GROWL to it. I'm not talking distortion. I'm talking a clean tone with a tubey growl. I'm not going to claim it sounds like some expensive heavy tube amp. But I love how the t1m module seems to growl. Punchy mids, plenty of low end. I turn my highs down a bit.. and I absolutely love this amp combined with my 102p and 151HR. Don't let the modular system scare you, it sounds great..this thing is built very solid. No rattling when I move it. You have the option of switching to a graphic EQ, or turning it into an acoustic amp..or buying a more powerful frame with a slightly different sound even with the same modules..or you can use the spare modules and run with two amps. I really liked the 800w version's tone. But I absolutely LOVE my MoMark 500black.
