Overview

The PMD620 offers direct to MP3 recording in three quality levels, as well as fully uncompressed, CD-quality 44.1/48 kHz .wav format in 16 or 24-bit resolution, allowing the user to configure the PMD620 for a wide variety of applications, from extended-length voice recordings to high-quality music applications. Sound quality is enhanced by the inclusion of two condenser microphones on the PMD620, as well as line and external mic inputs, and an external mic output.

The new PMD620 use SD flash memory for data storage. The PMD620 accepts high capacity memory cards up to 2TB, (2048 gigabytes).
The PMD620 offers one-touch recording using a button with its own tactile feel and red highlight illumination. The unit's transport controls will be familiar to users of personal portable music devices, and incorporates a thumb-operated scroll wheel and a vivid organic LED (OLED) display screen, one of the first in the industry, which uses very little power to illuminate, thus extending the unit's battery life. (The PMD620 is powered by two AA batteries.)

The display's black background means that all alpha-numerics and function icons are always crisp and easy to read. The screen is also configurable thanks to two font sizes, allowing more information on the screen with the smaller font and highly readable key information with the larger one.
Included in the firmware is "Copy Segment" editing, which uses non-destructive cut-and-paste-style editing to create a new sound file, which can be up/downloaded via the built-in USB port. Another menu feature, "Skip Back," allows transcribers the ability to review recorded audio from 1 to 60 previous seconds. And the PMD620's USB 2.0 port allows drag-and-drop transfer of files to a PC. "Level" and "Peak" LEDs let you know the status of your input signal, and you can toggle between four displays screens that provide elapsed time, time remaining and other key data.

This recorder has been working great for over a year....

By Gus

from Houston, TX

I have owned the Marantz PMD620 for over a year now and have not had any major problems with it. While most of my friends went for the Edirol I found in my research that the Marantz had less limitations for what I needed. I am a music teacher and weekend musician and my wife sings with church and a local band. We use the recorder about every day. From rehearsals to concerts or anytime we need to have something archived in audio format. No issues with type of SD cards (I use a 16GB and have used sandisk & transcend)or batteries. Wonderful recordings with very clear/clean audio.I am looking into the new Marantz PMD661 with xlr inputs...

Great features, professional

By Herbalamy

from Miami

I researched and reviewed many similar recorders before and since purchasing the Marantz PMD620, and am confident I made the right choice. It has several features that others do not and they have worked out better than I even expected. I particularly like the mono feature (many don't have this), and really like the Auto track feature. You can set it to make a new track at pre-set intervals. I use the unit to record professional courses I teach to live audiences, then edit them and sell them on CDs as continuing education. This feature reduces the amount of editing I have to do to break up long stretches of time and has made this the best unit for me. And I didn't even know it had this feature, as Marantz and reviewers don't mention it. I can also make a new track quickly and easily by pressing the Record button, anytime I chose. This also makes editing much easier and quicker. The 3 different preset setting capability is terrific, as is the one touch recording, the super clear display, and the numerous attenuation possibilities. Only one wish is that the record volume were a wheel or dial, rather that a button. The sound is great, sometimes too great, very sensitive mikes. And the sound has been very clean with external mikes. It would help a lot if they made the USB port a 2.0, as downloading through this is ridiculously slow. Using a SD card adaptor is MUCH faster, but requires taking the card in and out of that card slot with the flimsy door that I am very worried about breaking. The unit will not work if the door is not closed.Compared to the other units in this price range, this is definitely the best. And the support at Marantz is fantastic. I have called them a few times and they have been available, quick and terrificly knowledgeable. I also own an Olympus LS-10 and when I called them with a question, they opened the catalog and read something to me, and it wasn't even related to the question, and otherwise knew nothing. The LS-10 is also very nice. I love the feel of it, but it is lacking several features that the PMD620 has, and it has turned out that this makes the 620 significantly better for me, and the LS-10 has become just a back up. I highly recommend this unit.

Solid small recorder

By jersey guy

from New Jersey

I have a couple of recorders in this general class, and this one is the most solidly built. I like the OLED display, the fact that it uses AA cells which are dirt cheap at discount warehouses, and the record presets make it easy to save different parameters and recall them quickly.

Great Product!

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I have tried almost every recorder on the market and have found this one to be the best quality and easy to use. Able to use up to 2TB size cards when available is a cool thing too.

great performance not a lot of features

By cajon carl

from midwest

I bought this unit to record 2 piece guitar and percussion at gigs. The recording quality is great even with the built in mics (the condensor mics do pick up crowd noise quite a bit) recording off the mixer is great just set the input level and rocknroll.multitrack and effects would be nice but thats not what I was getting this for anyway.
