The Sledgehammer Snare Drum bludgeons its way through the din with extreme volume and a distinct rounded tone. It features a 1.2mm hand-hammered brass shell that measures 14" x 6-1/2" with a traditional 45° bearing edge.
The snare drum features handbuilt and hand-finished Black Panther drum shells and completely redesigned hardware. From the fresh, sculpted lug design to the smart new badge, Mapex Black Panther snare drums are now more beautiful than ever.
Mapex Black Panther hardware
The cylinder-drive strainer uses a self-lubricating bearing to ensure smooth operation while providing minute control of the snare tension. Mapex's piston-style throw-off is incredibly smooth and requires minimal effort to operate, and the adjustment dial employs micro-lock technology that provides a tactile click as it's turned, allowing precise control.
Sonic Saver Hoop
The Sonic Saver Hoop bridges the gap between flanged hoops and die-cast hoops. A unique shaping process creates a profile that reduces wear and tear to both sticks and hands while dramatically enhancing the response and feel of every rimshot.
The Sonic Saver is significantly lighter than a conventional die-cast hoop, so it won't choke the shell's vibration. The result is a more natural percussive sound with much greater resonance.
This Mapex Black Panther snare drum features stainless steel snare wires for crisp, lively action, and premium Remo drum heads, including a coated Ambassador batter head.

I purchased this snare and I love it! It really breaks through at outside venues. The rim shots explode and it is just a killer. I would recommend this snare if you are looking for a well made and sounding brass snare. It is heavy so you need a solid snare stand.
This is one of the first snares I have ever bought and I don't regret this decision. The finish of it is so weird but looks so awesome! Plus the snare is perfect for any style of music. Buy it!!!
This is quite honestly one of the best snares I've ever played. The brass really gives it a nice fat, round tone. It's very loud and sensitive. The play-ability on this thing is impecable. The rolls come out loud and clean. I'm a hard hitter, and this thing is durable. This drum is ideal for anyone who plays rock, but I could even see it being a great jazz snare. Personally, I play metal and punk, and this snare gave me exactly the tone I was looking for. I recommend it to anyone looking for a crisp drum sound.
Like all Mapex products this thing is a real workhorse. Great sound and feel, and built to last a lifetime. I played this for over an hour at a music shop the other day. The first thing I noticed is the throw off felt very solid and smooth. With the snares engaged this thing sang like any metal drum should. The hammered brass shell definitely gives a darker and warmer sound than a steel shell, but I was surprised to find that it's not an overly dark sounding drum. There is definitely some ring to it and rim shots really crack. I was playing it at a medium high tuning and it felt and sounded great. From what I could tell it should easily be able to handle very low tunings, and semi high tunings shouldn't be much of a problem either. It seemed very versitle. The sound also had a lot of body to it. It was very full sounding. Perfect for hard rock or grunge. This has been described as a very loud drum, but up close it didn't seem too overbearing (though I'm sure everyone in the shop probably thought it was too loud!). Only thing left to say is that it definitely has a specific character to it, so you should try this drum out and see for yourself. Seems like a great purchase though.
These newly designed Black Panther drums are superb. I have played a lot of other brass snare drums and most of them are on the harsh sonic range with a sharp "bite", but this drum plays and sounds great from a very low volume, to ear-splitting rim shots that have a fat, warm tone. I am not a heavy hitter and that is why this drum is just perfect for me. All you have to do is just lay the stick down on the head and the drum sounds full and funky! I have it tuned down low with the snares fairly tight, one Moon Gel, and it is perfect for funk and R&B. If you tune the drum up high, it becomes a savage beast! The newly designed hardware is amazing, and the stock heads are made by Remo and sound good. I am going to try a FibreSkyn ambassador to warm it up even more. All in all, this is one of my favorite drums that I have ever owned and played.
