Nice "Crossover" guitar for the money.

By Bikewer

from ST. Louis, MO.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez FLMOD500 Flamenco Moderna Acoustic-Electric Nylon String:

I was looking for a "crossover" guitar for nylon-string jazz playing. A standard classical was just not friendly for my old fingers.

I went to a Taylor Road Show night at GC and while there checked out this Manuel Rodriguez number... I was very impressed.

Bought it a couple of days ago. Rodriquez is apparently well-known for it's high-end classical and flamenco instruments made in Spain.
This much less expensive instrument is made in China, and it appears they've done a good job of it.

You have laminate sides and back; "walnut" on the 500 and "maple" on the 550. The tops are solid, cedar on the 500 and spruce on the 550.
Fishman electronics.
14-fret neck with the 1 7/8" (ish) neck common to crossover guitars. Slight neck radius.
Tasteful "abalone" fret markers both on the edge and off-center on the top....Very nice.
Nice "marquetry" rosette.
Overall, a very tasteful, understated instrument.

The Fishman electronics are pretty standard...You have a tuner (accurate when compared to my Snark) volume, treble, bass, and midrange controls.
The whole unit pivots up to expose the battery compartment...Very easy to change batteries.

This is a compact, comfortable instrument. I'm old, have creaky old shoulders....It's quite comfortable.

Acoustic sound is excellent but not particularly loud like an expensive classical... Fine for a smaller space. If you want loud...Plug it in . The electronics work well.... Response seems even across the strings but watch the bass settings on your amp.
I found that setting everything "flat" on my Cube 40 was about right.

For fun, I put the amp on the "lead" setting and played with higher volumes and effects....Sounded very good. You could play funky blues or rock on this instrument.

All in all, and excellent value... I was going to go for the Cordoba "fusion" but this sounds as good and is a couple of hundred bucks cheaper.

Perfect crossover guitar

By Rob

from Fontana Ca.

Pros

  • 1.75' nut is great for electric guitar players
  • Solid cedar top makes for good Spanish tone

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez FLMOD500 Flamenco Moderna Acoustic-Electric Nylon String:

I really wanted to get a good crossover nylon string guitar and I had narrowed it to either the Córdoba fusion or the Yamaha nxt and I found this unsuspecting low profile looking guitar, but the moment I picked it and started strumming it just blew my mind.
It sounds like a real Spanish made guitar, even though it said "made in China"
I made some quick research on the brand and I learned that Manuel Rodriguez is one of the oldest guitar manufacturers in the world, the guitar might be Chinese but the design is from Spain which is why it sounds different than the other guitars I tried that day.
The logo caught my eye so I researched it as well and I knew I had seen it before on a lot of my favorite guitar players on YouTube
I own other nylon string guitars but this one is my new favorite

      A disapointment

      By Pencilnose

      from Lake Elsinore, CA

      Pros

      • Good finish and wood choice.
      • Nice unplugged tone,
      • Whisper quiet electronics.

      Cons

      • Bridge popped off.
      • Many uneven frets.
      • Sharp fret edges.

      Best Uses

      • Wall decoration.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez FLMOD500 Flamenco Moderna Acoustic-Electric Nylon String:

I have re-dressed the frets, leveled them, and re-crowned them. I have also reattached the bridge. I still use the guitar in a live band, but I'm saving up for one with much higher quality.

Comments about Manuel Rodriguez FLMOD500 Flamenco Moderna Acoustic-Electric Nylon String:

trimmed ends of frets not smoothed. Catch on fingers. Pickup cable inside guitar body hanging loose, not secured. This may be a good brand, but this cannot be their best work.
