Was going for a Keeley 4-knob, but the shop was out and they suggested I try this. It will probably still be a temporary fix on my way to either the Keeley or Pigtronics, but for a simple compression with basic parameters (level and sustain knobs) done well, Malekko has done a great job. Its tiny footprint on the pedalboard is a plus, taking up roughly 1/3 the area of a standard stompbox. The compression is very transparent, and adds a nice sparkling boost to chordal playing when the level is set to about 1 o'clock. I leave it turned on about 90% of the time, as it really livens up the tone of my RG/tube amp combo. I generally keep the sustain around 2 o'clock for a mildly punchy sound, but it will remain absolutely silent up until about the 4-5 o'clock range. Even then, the hiss is not too noticeable unless it's engaging my preamp tubes on fully saturated gain. Not sure if it will give they Dyna-Comp chickin' pickin' crowd the squishy pop for which they're looking, but I'm not really into that style of playing, and so wouldn't consider my opinion worth much in that area. However, it does compress enough to get a nice tubular funk sound. When looking at compressors, due to the lack of reviews/name recognition, I would have most likely avoided even giving this a shot. Don't let that happen to you if you're in the market for a great little compressor that won't break the bank. Oh yeah, and here's to my home town of Portland, Oregon (where the Malekko company is located) for attracting yet another quality musical crafter to the bunch!
Was looking for compression without much noise and found it. I'm a sound freak and my country guitar needed some pop and slight sustain. It really worked out great and saved some space on my pedal board.
