I am a school music teacher and bought these to use with my classes. The kids loved the dolphin shaped tuners. I found them easy to tune, and the variety of colors was and is great fun! So many children these days want to be guitar players. These ukuleles are an affordable way to begin skill building that can be applied to guitars when the children are bigger - though my high school seniors loved them, too!
This is a bargain priced ukulele that does everything such a ukulele should do. After the nylon strings were stretched out by a week of constant tuning, they began to hold their pitches quite well. The brown ones had slightly better sound than the other ten colors.
I bought 22 of these ukes, 2 each of the eleven colors. They survived four weeks of elementary children from grade 1 - 6 in very good shape, even the ones that were dropped. They have a nice tone (especially the brown ones) and sound great.

I think the brown ones sounded better because a different sort of finish was used, rather than the very attractive looking glossy paint.
Like the ad says, at this price, you can buy more than one to coordinate with your outfit.

Right off the bat, I have to complain how much a nuisance this thing is to keep in tune. Even after a week of letting it settle and regularly pulling it back in tune, it would fall out of tune after about 5-10 minutes of playing, and noticeably so.

It's also got some problems with intonation. Many of the frets are poorly placed, so playing anything more than basic chords isn't recommended, as they will sound very off. Even some of the lower registers are very poorly intonated, and there's no way to adjust this short of getting the saddle/bridge off and placing it in a slightly better spot, which is more work than it's worth.

Negative things aside, the uke still has a pretty good sound. I've played ones more expensive as this that didn't sound as nice, and it's a very sturdy instrument.

Overall, it's a good ukelele if you aren't sure you want a ukelele yet, are a beginner, or just want one to screw around with. I wouldn't recommend using it for any serious work, such as recording or doing a gig. You -will- have to get over the constant re-tuning problems, but once you do, it's a very fun instrument to play, and it's something anyone can pick up.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

The bridge was glued/screwed on crookedly...there was no way this thing would get or stay in tune. I was tempted to try another because this thing was so darn cute, and except for the bridge seemed decent enough for the price. MusiciansFriend , as always has wonderful Gear Heads in Customer Service and accepted the return.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

Overall, this is a fun uke to play. I have higher end Lanikai and Martin ukeleles, but I wanted something that I could travel with worry free. This is it. I carry it with me all the time. It goes to grocery stores, restaurants, work, etc. I treat my instruments well mostly, but this little guy has taken some abuse. It's still kicking with very little sign of wear or damage.

The first thing I did when I got this ukulele was put some half decent strings on it. The original strings aren't awful, but I don't them. It took several days of frequent tuning, but the tuners started holding their tune for a few hours at a time. I imagine they'll get a little bit better as the strings finish stretching completely.

The instrument has a pretty basic look. Upon closer inspection, there are tiny, black paint spots. On my ukulele, the paint that meets the fretboard was pretty sloppy. The flaws don't draw away from the overall appearance of my instrument.

The tone isn't bad for the price. It's an entry level painted uke, so as one would expect, it sounds fairly muffled and mellow. It's lack of potent projection makes it good for playing in public buildings without drawing too much attention. The dampened tone also covers up mistakes better than a ukulele with a clearer tone.

The play-ability out of the box wasn't the best, but it was majorly improved with the new strings I put on it. The action isn't as low and smooth as my Martin, but it's not frustratingly high like on some other budget ukes I've played. I'm not displeased with the setup.

In conclusion, I'm glad I purchased this instrument. It's far from professional quality, but it does better than I was expecting for the price. If you want to start out with a really nice ukulele or upgrade into something better than what you have, I would suggest paying a bit more for something of better quality. If you just want a travel uke or something *really cheap to learn on, this is a good one to grab!

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

I restrung this little uke with some D'Addario strings and the sound drastically improved. The top fret requires a lot of pressure to successfully bar but I've found that to be the case for most sopranos I've played on. For the price you pay, this is a decent little travel buddy or practice plinker.

This is my first time playing an instrument of the string family and for me it was hard to tune so I'd recommend purchasing a tuner along with it. Playing this uke is fun.

Comments about Mahalo U-30 Painted Soprano Ukulele:

Excellent quality for price, true pitch all the way up fretboard, attractive appearance. Inexpensive enough to give as a toy, but well made enough to play real music. The gig bag is a nice bonus (no padding, but good for keeping off dust/carrying the instrument). Allow time for strings to hold pitch: tune them up half a step above pitch, and retune several times a day for a few days. They will stretch and stay in tune.
