Bought this the other day and the kid at GC asked me what I would use it for? Well, I play through a Fender Blues JR and just recently picked up the Blackstar LT Dual pedal (awesome by the way) which makes my Blues Jr into a 3 channel amp now and wanted this to use as a lead/boost pedal, thus 4 Channels now on a Fender Blues Jr, yeah I know pretty cool. I don't like any delay on my rhythm channels, just a touch of verb, but I love it on my lead tone to help make it sing and a little bit of sustain and depth. This pedal accomplishes this with style. Exactly what I was hoping for. Yes it does the Eric Johnson tone, but has other purposes as well, like a lead/boost pedal in my case. I'm a musician of 30 years and always looking for ways to simplify things. I've gone the mutli effects units route, while the Vox Tonelab was the best I found, they all were difficult to adjust on the fly at a gig. With the Golden Cello and the Blackstar, it's all just a twist of the knobs at your feet now. Great Pedal, many uses.
I play a Gibson "The Paul" with humbuckers, and the pedal tones sound very good. I get good distortion while each note still remains clear, and the delay is basic but does the job. My only issue is with the battery. I took the pedal out of the box and played about 15 minutes, then put it away. The next day I took it to a jam session and it had no power at all. The power light would not even come on. Luckily the folks at Guitar Center had recommended I purchase a separate power supply so I was able to keep using it without changing the battery. My next purchase will be another 9v battery, so I'll see how long it works with a new battery. Overall, I would recommend the pedal just for the tones it provides while keeping it simple.
Plug a Les Paul into this pedal, select the neck-pickup, and start playing the solo to November Rain. You'll buy the pedal.
Given that you know your pedals, and given today's current product offerings, you must have concluded as I did, there is no single pedal available quite like the Mad Professor Golden Cello. So, like me, it's probably the reason you've purchased one, or are giving it some consideration. I do believe single coil guitar players may have a better overall experience with the Golden Cello, as I do notice Humbuckers, by their nature, drive this pedal a little hot. However, it still manages to sound as advertised - very swweeet. For example, I play an LP, and my own settings are all at noon, or below, on the Golden Cello, and I'm enjoying some GREAT tones. I did put a compression sustainer in front of it, and I keep it's settings fairly tame as well. This addition adds a noticeable difference to an already unique Golden Cello DSP pedal. IMHO, for overdriven/delayed tones, I've found this pedal to be the genuine article, and a must have for your pedal board.
Two words. Gorgeous, perfect
I'm a gear addict for years. Found a lot of great and not so great pedals. Finding the right overdrive/distortion has been really hard for me, as I play smoother styles of music, and need melodic and harmonic tonality through a smoothly overdriven sound. I love this pedal. Yes it gets very bold. But for me its strength is that you can hear the notes and harmonies clearly through the distortion, and they stay sweet. Best pedal for my needs. Finally happy.
This pedal delivers on what it promises. It gives you the essence of Eric Johnson in one box. Very easy to set, no bad tones in this at all. If you want that elusive, singing tone that he has then buy this pedal. Sounds equally good with Strats, Teles, and humbuckers.
