Overview

The lightweight Mackie Thump TH-15A Active Speaker delivers deep low-end and real power in an extremely portable package. Designed by the same team that produced the best-selling Mackie SRM450v2, the active TH-15A offers Class D Fast Recovery amplification that pushes 400W of power to the high-frequency compression driver and the bass-pounding 15" woofer.

The Thump TH15A also has Mackie active processing, including a precision crossover, and driver time-alignment, which provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. Versatile by design, the Mackie TH-15A is equipped with a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control. Since it can be pole-mounted or used as a wedge, the Mackie Thump TH-15A represents the best value available for a complete stage speaker setup.

More than Just a Powered Speaker Cabinet
The TH-15A has 2 built-in power amps”300W for the 15" woofer and 100W for the high-frequency compression driver. Mackie's Class D Fast Recovery low-frequency amp drives the woofer more efficiently with less heat byproduct than other speakers. Also Mackie Active technology (based on the popular SRMv2 Series) divides the frequencies via a precision 2-way crossover and also time aligns the signals so low-frequency and high-frequency signals arrive in sync to every member of your audience. Active compression provides a first line of defense for the drivers and thermal circuitry protects the amplifiers and power supply should things get too hot. All the onboard electronic systems work together dynamically to produce superior quality sound previously unavailable in this price range.

Portability Meets Versatility
Not only is the Mackie TH-15A a superb PA enclosure, it also makes a superior monitor wedge”just lay the cabinet on its side and turn it up. The compact, lightweight design means zero strain, whether mounting it on a high pole or loading up the van. The TH-15A speaker's wide frequency response makes it ideal as a keyboard, vocal, or even bass guitar monitor. The Thump has incredibly smooth response and dispersion over a wide range of frequencies, so you can crank it without the fear of earsplitting feedback.

Exceptional Sonic Performance
TH-15A powered loudspeakers put out a tremendous amount of sound for their size and price tag. The two-way ported design generates ample quantities of chest-pounding bass, and its 1" compression driver ensures smooth, wide dispersion. Mackie inserted a 3-band equalizer at the input to give you all the tonal control you could ever want, with an available 15dB boost or cut at 80Hz (low shelf), 100Hz to 8kHz (sweepable mids) and 12kHz (high shelf). With the Mackie TH-15A speaker's extremely versatile EQ, you can add some extra thump to that kick drum, bring out the sizzle in your hi-hats, add pop to vocals, or correct acoustic anomalies in the room.

Protecting Your Investment
Mackie added some extra circuitry to keep the Thump TH-15A speaker's performing at its best, even when pushed really hard for long periods of time. Each driver has its own transparent compression circuit, which helps protect them from damaging transient peaks. An over-excursion filter, inserted just before the low-frequency amplifier, protects the woofer from bottoming-out when the low end is driven to the maximum. This means you can hit them hard without fear of thermal damage. Things can get pretty hot in the real world, so if the electronics do overheat, separate thermal switches activate and shut down the high- and/or low- frequency amplifiers until they cool down. These extra protections ensure long life and great-sounding loudspeakers you can always count on.

When I first took the speaker out of the box it was the first time that I had seen it, as there was no display at the store. I had only seen and read about it on the net. I only hooked 1 of the speakers up and ran my DR-880 thru it and wow what a sound. The name Thump is correct. My old PV speakers do not even come close to the sound of these Mackie Thumps. The sound is great, and the bass that it puts out is out of this world clean and crisp. I would recomend this speaker to anyone anyone.

Got my first brand new th-15a and it didnt work at all. Couldnt get any sound out of it and had to take it back. The one that did work sounds good except when its at a low volume or its a part of the song that doesnt have alot going on, you can hear a fizz. But it does have alot of bass so if your a dj and cant afford a sub like me this is the best way to go.

Awesome!

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I bought these while on sale because I am getting back into being a mobile dj after about 5 years off. These speakers are just awesome. Very good sound with a lot of power. I haven't had to use the built in equalizer, but like that it's an added feature. they have very good bass response and are pretty light for a 15" speaker. I can't wait to do my first show with these puppies!!

Great Speakers but there's One Thing...

By Barry

from Nashville, TN

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

Normally I do not write reviews but there is no truly accurate reviews and nothing to determine what you will get from this speaker from short term and long term. I work in audio system design so I will try not put use a lot of technical terms that no one understand except audiophiles. First off, these speakers produce some of the best low end sound of any active single 15in speaker, in any price range point blank period. For this reason alone it is well worth the "small investment" comparatively speaking. You can run these all night at high volume and not worry about overheating loss of sound quality or anything...on the low end. Warning... your high end WILL go out eventually I promise you that. There is no doubt about this! But it is easily replaceable with high end driver that is more suitable for this speaker. After you have replaced it you have a nearly perfect speaker for a price that is unbeatable. I have installed these in many clubs, lounges, and churches. To avoids problems I just replace the high end 1in driver (which is less than 40 bucks) straight out the box, install them in the location with the correct additional subs or speakers and I have had nothing but fantastic feedback from the owners.

Get more than you pay for

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

These cabinets are perfect for the budget minded DJ.I got them for the weight and price only, after I did the in-store test. Little did I know how good they would actually sound when I got them home. The trick to loosing the hum, is to use a good mixer. I noticed a big difference when I switched them from my numark mixer and tried them with my Pioneer mixer. I got a lot more bass, headroom and little to no hum/ distortion. THESE THINGS HIT!! Thats coming from the owner of QSC HPR152i.

Outstanding speaker for an amazing price!!!!

By DJ Tonic

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I have been a DJ for 16 years and have done everything from a small karaoke venue to large dance clubs. I have used many different types of passive speakers in the past and most recently I was using peavey setup. I decided to make the switch to an active powered speaker to hope to limit my weight of my current setup and hoped that I could match the sound. So after months of testing at my local guitar center I tryed a pair of these Mackie Thumps. I was really impressed with the sound and how clean and crisp the highs and lows were. I mean lows these things really do thump. Once a got them home and hooked them into my mixer wow it was even more amazing. Then after my first show I was even more impressed. I got so many complements from everyone about how amazing they sound. If anyone wants a great speaker no matter if you new to being a DJ or have been at as many years has myself. Try these out you will not be disappointed.

AWESOME speaker

By Tommy Thompson

from Punta Gorda

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

After reading reviews I decided I would give these a shot and I'm glad I did. Mackie did a good job with these. The price seemed to good to be true, but don't let that fool you. I am a mobile DJ and play everything from oldies to current hip hop/rap. These speakers really do thump. The only complaint I have is that Mackie didn't insulate the woofer ring and air escapes through the edge...so it makes some noise when pushing bass through it. I took 5 minutes and 5 dollars and bought some weather stripping. Pulled the speaker put that around the edge...problem solved. I run these with a powered sub and my sound has never been better.

Good Speaker

By Murdog

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I finally did a gig with this speaker--playing my roland v-drums through it, as a near-field monitor. The band told me that it made my kit sound like a totaly new kit, and added new presence in the stage mix. I know reviews on the street seems to be mixed at best. But, for me, this speaker rocks.

Buyer Beware!! Mackie has literally dropped there quality!!

By ANDERS LARSON

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

After buying (6) Mackie Thump TH-15A's for stage monitor needs, two were not working right out of the box!! I sent the two back to GC and was sent back two replacements TH-15A's. One out of the two were not working ...again sent the one back, and was sent one as a replacement, which DID NOT WORK AGAIN!!! Sent that TH-15A back to GC and finally was sent a working unit TH-15A. After using these (6) Mackie Thumps TH-15A's as stage monitors on the road, one stopped working again.....here we go again.... Lots of headache with these units not working right out of the box and constant shipping back and forth!! Audio quality ...very average to...poor, I guess you get what you pay for.... Mackie Quality has deteriorated ....just look at the returns listed as used items condition (4) . Now I am looking at getting rid of these or trading them in ASAP!!

Great Speaker for the Price!

By Mr. DJ

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I bought a pair of Mackie TH-15's last week. I had never heard them, only read several reviews. They were very well packaged. When I plugged them up and listened, I was immediately amazed! The Bass was very crisp and the highs were clean. Then, as I stepped back to listen from the other side of the room, I noticed that I was only listening to 1 speaker. The tweeter on one of the speakers was not working. I took it back the following day and exchanged it with no problem. OMG! It was even more amazing with both speakers working. For the money, the TH-15 are an AWESOME choice. For the last several years I had been using 2 Peavey 215's for small DJ gigs and had no problems. But, the TH-15's sound far better than the Peaveys, especially since i was able to tweek them with EQ on the back. I am going to get the Mackie 1801 Subwoofer next month.

I bought mypair of MacKie thumps a few months ago. These speakers are probably the best i have heard in a while at that price range my older Jbl's couldnt even compete with the quality due to the built in equaliser witch gives this product the advantage in such a competitive market.

Here it goes

By Alex

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

After looking and reading... it was down to 2 active speakers. These or the Behringers 215D. I tested both speakers @ GC and decided to buy these. Gave them a test run 2 days later. This was a pretty big hall with 150 people. They held there own for 6 hours. Now, the base was ok...and the red light on the back kept going off a lot. The amp in the back was really hot. So, anything over 150 people..i would add the subs...dont get me wrong they held there own but you never want to push them to hard. good speakers for the price. They look very nice and sound good. And they are super light...not heavy at all...over all 5 stars for what they do and good for..

Do Not Buy These, They Will Not Last!

By Talon Jadwick

from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

These initially sound great with music blasting but they have a really terrible digital white noise "gate fizz" sound on the tail of everything. Worst of all they DIE REALLY QUICKLY!! I bought 6 Thumps in October by January I had sent 3 in for warranty. The price point is tempting but do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

the price is really good , they sound ok, but they have a back noice like a fuz i got 2 and they last 6 monts and they die we buy 2 more and the same think they lasted like 8 months and they die , the only good think about this speakers is that they are light weight , because the price is not good because they keep on breaking, at the end you spend more money, if you had the same problem as i dit posted so some one else don have to go thru all of these

Great value for impressive sound quality.

By Clark

from Boston, MA

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

I don't usually write reviews, but as I've been starting my professional DJ career, I am learning as I go and found that I rely on reviews like these to help people like myself to make positive decisions when making investment decisions. So this is my way to give back to the musicians community. With that being said, I purchased these about a month ago so I can make the switch to active lightweight speakers instead the heavy passive ones. I currently DJ a small restaurant/lounge with an average of 50-80 people and gave these a run with some hip-hop and dance music. These speakers are light, and the sound quality that comes out of these is quite impressive. I was truly surprised how clean it was for such a low-cost speaker, I will note that the noise people described was there at low volumes, but not as much as I expected. Turn up the volume, and you'll be fine. That's what they're for. Bass response was great, and the highs were clear. They were able to get the party started. The bad- Very little head room. The Thumps run out of gas and redlined at much lower volume than I anticipated. My confidence in them was lower when I saw that they were clipping so early. I don't think they made it past 95db before I noticed the red light blinking. I needed to keep adjusting the EQ on the amps to try and keep them protected. Bottom line is great sound, but not nearly as much to keep me confident in their reliability if I needed more out of them. Needless to say I returned them and upgraded to the Mackie SRM-450v2, which I have pushed far past what I gave the Thumps and have yet to see them break a sweat. After 3 gigs with them I am still amazed an happy with them. The 12" SRM-450v2's seem to have better bass response than the Thump 15". If you are looking to do very small events, house parties, or booth speaker then the Thumps are definitely your speaker, if you need some great quality sound with plenty of head room, power, reliability and portability look more towards the SRM-450v2, QSC K-series, JBL 515XT or PRX612/615. You'll pay more for all of these, but having piece of mind is more than worth it.

Good DJ Speakers

By Clint Brown

from Baton Rouge, LA

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

Most who review these are DJ types. As for DJ speakers, in this price range, they are suitable. They should never be considered for live sound FOH. Putting a band through them they sound horrible. Playing MP3 or CD's is fine. They do clip easy as everyone says. You will not be able to run past halfway on the gain so just get used to it. For 200w RMS they do get relatively loud. These do not compare to JBL PRX (or EON) or QSC. Not even Mackie 450's or EV. There is a reason for the price difference. You do get what you pay for. When compared to the Berhingers, Alto's, Peavey's, Harbinger's, they do come out on top. I've heard some go louder but overall sound and feature set is best on the Thumps for these type's of speakers. I tailgate with them and JBL PRX sub and it's perfect. I would never show up to a live event with these. For portable live sound, stick with JBL or QSC. For small DJ...these are more than fine.

WOW Very Nice

By Corey

from Aurora Colorado

Comments about Mackie Thump TH-15A 15" Active Loudspeaker:

At first I didn't know what to think about using these speakers for DJing. I have heard they worked great for bands, but didn't know what to expect from them running compressed music. I hooked them up when I got home. The sound was crisp, and responsive. The speakers throw sound real far, and wide as well. The lows they produce are real impressive for a active PA speaker. I think they sound better than most active speakers that cost twice as much. One thing I did knowest though is the clip warning light on the back seems to go off before it should. Eventhough with the clip light going off the speaker shows no sighns of distorting, or excessive heating. Sence I play mostly club, Hip Hop music I use my subs. So the clip light going off is not a issue. They do have more than enough THUMP to stand alone with most kinds of music though. DJing weddings, and other kinds of venues with these without subs is no problem. Over all they have real clean sound. The Thumps are easy to move around, and load up. They seem to be very durable. Also the way they are styled with the grey front grills looks great by the way. All in all Great Speakers for the price.
