The Onyx Satellite FireWire Recording System features a sleek, portable FireWire recording pod and dedicated Base Station. The FireWire bus-powered recording pod has two premium Onyx preamps and top-notch 24-bit/96kHz capable A/D and D/A converters. The Pod easily secures into place on the Base Station for A/C power and additional I/O, turning the system into a two-input, six-output FireWire audio interface with an advanced input-patching matrix, talkback, monitoring, and surround speaker control.
The Satellite System's two inputs can be switched between mic, instrument or balanced line input sources, and its six-channel volume control provides for surround sound mixing. Its control room section provides for switching between two separate monitor outputs for multiple monitor speaker setups.
Both Mac and PC compatible, the Satellite System works with all ASIO and Core Audio compatible software. It comes bundled with a full version of Mackie's award-winning Tracktion 2 software, providing a complete out-of-the-box recording setup with professional features like a 64-bit high-definition mix engine, unlimited track count, ReWire and VST support, MIDI controller mapping, external synchronization, and integrated support for Mackie Control Universal and C4 control surfaces. I would honestly like to tell you that I returned the first one thinking it was a defective unit, but I was so wrong. Windows XP would not recognize the docking station and after a number of tries, I took it back, not knowing that the updated driver along with installing it using firewire bus power ONLY solved my particular issue. The pre amps are amazing and I used to get clicks and pops using an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB interface, but that is all a memory now. I sold my Fast Track Pro due to a lot of problems and CPU usage on my PC was the biggest issue, but I am SO glad I chose this over the presonus firesnot, I mean FIREBOX...hehe. The features and sound out-weigh anything in this price range and up to $400.00. Get it while it is only $200.00 before they figure out that this thing smokes everything in its price range! There should be way more reviews for this thing...MACKIE BABY!!!
Mackie has hit a home run w/ this product. The ONYX Satellite has far superior preamps compared to the rest of the junk in this price range. It has pristine AKM A/D converters that sound excellent at 96kHz. The portable pod and docking station are a great feature for songwriters. There is nothing on the market right now that offers the superior performance of the Satellite for even a fraction of the cost. This is the best small interface on the market PERIOD!
I think its hilarious when people post reviews on something like this and don't bother to read the instructions and end up looking like morons. This device works well. I've had my satellite pulled out while on multiple times (by grabby friends) and have had no problems. You CAN hear audio once its recorded of course, but you'll only be able to hear live recording from instuments if you have monitors run through the onyx. READ THE MANUAL and you'll love this DAW.
I bought my satellite from GC a month ago when the price dropped. I have an Onyx 1620 and needed 2 extra preamps. I had an Audio Buddy but traded up cuz the price and they look cool next to each other. I use a Korg D888 to record so I don't have any firewire/OS issues. For $200 I got a well constructed set of preamps...
My bass player purchased this unit in order to get into recording. I instaled the unit for him since he has no recording experience. The unit was surprisingly easy to to operate. After testing out the unit I decided that I should get one! The unit is great for small home projets and it is easy to transport to use while away on tour. The mic pres are very usable and the Traktion software is very easy to use on the PC. I have not used it on a Mac so I can not comment on that). The unit was build solid so I would trust taking it around while away. I also like the talkback function (which you usualy don't see in this price range). The unit has very usable converters which provide a clear tone. Once again the unit is build very well (metal not plastic construction). This is a great tool for any musician on the go.
It is not often that one gets to say that the right decision was made, no questions asked, and this is one of those exceptional times.....The sound delivered by this device is phenomenal!!! You can listen to the tracks which you've previously laid down as you monitor the input which you are recording wheter it's a guitar or a mic, the features on this thing are amazing as well..For a firewire interface (which is what really sold me in the beginning) you can't beat the price...just a word to the wise, read your manual thoroughly before tinkering with it, (that's where you'll figure out that low latency will allow you to monitor inputs and that not powering off before pulling satellite unit will cause permanent damage to unit).....as far as Tracktion 2....amazing, professional and very user friendly....I'm glad I purchased this particular item over other comparable ones.
First, you cannot listen to the music you record and here the playback from the computer with the onyx like you can with the toneport, also I had to re-install the onyx after every setting that I changed on Sonar, and by setting I mean that pushing mute threw it off. Half the time I had to re-install it when I rebooted my computer. My computer is compatible, I ran all the checks, and I now have toneport which runs perfect and both tone port and the onyx are ASIO driver based
The first mackie onyx that I purchased was a defective unit, I had to use the pod to record and do everything else until the replacement came back from Mackie. But after I sent back the defective, I must say, a well working unit is constructed perfectly rugged, it doesn't drop out in Sonar 7, you can pull it out of the base and plug it back in no problem. And its the best quality pre amp in this price range. I would recommend this product to everyone.
I've had this unit for a couple of weeks and love it. Mackie have always provided quality for a low price. The mic pres are great and the 2 line inputs plus gtr inputs allow me to leave everything plugged in all the time and select them from the front. The unit also handles my headphone and control room monitoring. I've thrown out my 8 channel console and my workspace is neater and more efficient for it. i plugged it into my Mac and immediately started work - didn't even have to read the manual. For DAW's and home studios this is the best deal. Firewire all the way.
