Overview

Mackie Onyx Blackjack-If you could fit one of Mackie's flagship Onyx 1640i consoles into your workspace and budget, you probably would do it. But that shouldn't mean you have to settle for the cheapest, plastic 2x2 interface available. Mackie has spent serious time and research creating the Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface. It delivers the same proven Onyx preamps as Mackie's other flagship Onyx products in an ultra-compact, ergonomic desktop design perfect for your home studio. Other professional features include high-end AD/DA converters, built-in DIs, phantom power and true analog hardware monitoring of inputs for hassle-free zero-latency tracking, in either mono or stereo. The USB connection provides bus-power to the Blackjack, eliminating the need for another cable run. Plus, it's Mac/PC friendly and ready for most major DAWs right out of the box. So, don't settle. Be smart and check out the Onyx Blackjack - the utmost in sonic quality and simplicity.

Boutique-quality Onyx preamps
Great recordings start with high-quality preamps and you will simply not find preamps at this price range better than Blackjack's Onyx preamps. Mackie invested significant R&D efforts into developing their flagship Onyx mic preamps. Found on Mackie's most expensive studio consoles, Onyx pres are designed to meet or surpass expensive, esoteric standalone mic pres in terms of fidelity, headroom and transparency - as well as improved radio frequency (RFI) rejection and ultra-wide dynamic range. And with a full 60dB of available gain, would-be competitors are left in the dust.

High-quality AD/DA conversion
Quality doesn't stop at the boutique Onyx preamps. The Onyx Blackjack uses Cirrus Logic converters offering 114dB dynamic range (A-weighted) - a specification other companies sometimes charge thousands of dollars to achieve. Mackie's preamp circuitry is aligned precisely with the onboard analog-to-digital conversion to always provide you with the most headroom and the lowest noise and distortion possible, a real sonic benefit that is often ignored on smaller interfaces.

Zero-latency recording
Latency is evil and must be punished. If you have recorded with digital gear, chances are you feel the same way. It's a pesky computer-induced delay that can quickly kill the vibe of any recording session. Blackjack puts this issue to rest once and for all, featuring a true analog monitoring path directly from the preamps to your studio monitors and headphones. This means you can track while listening to the direct analog source with zero routing. Not only that, it also means you can adjust your buffer settings to maximize your computers processing ability. Oh yeah, Blackjack also allows you to track with zero latency in either mono or stereo, so you can get the right vibe when recording stereo signals like acoustic guitars and keyboards.

Professional tools
No other ultra-compact desktop interface delivers as many professional features as the Onyx Blackjack. Both channels double as built-in DIs for direct connection of guitars, basses, keyboards, drum machines, etc. Both channels also deliver 48V phantom power, so you can use studio-quality condenser mics with no problem. The studio monitor and headphone outputs have independent level controls for maximum flexibility. Plus, the Onyx Blackjack is bus-powered via USB, so there's no power supply to lose or another cable cluttering your workspace. It also comes with Mackie's Tracktion 3 Music Production software, so you can get started recording right away.

Ergonomically inclined
Most desktop interfaces have a serious flaw: their construction. First off, most are made of cheap, breakable plastic. Onyx Blackjack features a sleek, powder-coated all-metal chassis that is truly "Built-Like-A-Tank". You could literally use it as a hammer to smash the competition (not recommended at your local store). Second, when they are sitting on your desk, the competition lies flat, with no way to read the markings on the front panel. Have you ever accidently turned the wrong knob during your session? Not fun. The Onyx Blackjack sits with a 25-degree inclination, allowing for full view of all controls at all times, meaning more recording time and less hassle. A good idea - right?

The Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface is an extremely simple, but very powerful desktop interface that delivers all the features you want in a design that could fit in your man purse. Small studio. Big solution. Onyx Blackjack.

Just used my blackjack for the 1st time and it was great. I installed Cubase Sonar homestudio 7XL and then the Mackie driver and I was recording in less than a few hours. I love the sound of the ONYX mic pres and the unit is incredibly solid. Already wrote my first acoustic and vocal track. Major upgrade from my TASCAM pocket studio. I can't believe I waited so long to record on my computer.

I have been struggling with this unit for almost a year now. I have over 30 years of pro audio experience. My computer was brand new when I purchased this unit and is very stout as well as being optimized for audio production. Mackie techs keep telling me that they are working on the issues with this unit and that updated drivers will be available in the next month but I hear this from them all the time. I can't even use the Mackie ASIO drivers because they create noise, do not function properly or fail outright. 355ms of latency is absolutely unacceptable in this day and age for a product of this caliber. "Signal chain" is very important in getting your mix perfected in the pro audio industry and a decent mix cannot be achieved with this product. Constantly having to readjust the settings and driver for audio anomalies and latency issues is extremely unproductive. Since they have strung me along for months I'm sure that they will no longer honor their warranty at this point. I will probably end up trashing the unit, buying another manufacturer's product and never purchasing another Mackie product ever again. In my eyes a product functioning this poorly over such a long period of time is "misrepresentation" pure and simple.

Nice equipment but....

By Rich

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

I bought this unit and really liked the sound and ease of use. I wouldۡve kept it if the drivers were more stable, they kept going away and I would have to reload in the middle of a session. I tried it on both of my DAWۡs and the same results, and when I contacted Mackie they had no answers for me. Mackie gets an A+ on design, having all the plugs and connectors ie: XLR/Phone plugs, etc, in the back makes this unit clean on the desk top and fits nicely under your monitor. The Steinberg CI 2 is what I replaced it with and have since had no problems.

Avoid this product

By Matthew Small

from SF Cali

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

I bought the blackjack hoping to get a couple of the "legendary" mackie preamps at a bargain price. However, this unit has just wasted my time. It claims to have direct monitoring, but it does not work on my windows vista machine. After a quick web search I see that lots of other people are having the same issues. The new 3.0 device drivers don't seem to fix the issue. Back to my old reliable focusrite equipment.

Your built-in motherboard sound works better, no joke!

By Rev

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

Even with the latest version 3 drivers this thing is a joke. On an i7 4790 it crackles at even 256 buffers. Using ASIO4ALL with the built in Realtek sound on the motherboard I can easily go down to 64 buffers with no sound issues. Also, at equivalent buffer settings to the Realtek your DAW will also show much higher RTL latencies. I've tried it with USB 2 & 3 ports. What a disappointment, this thing is going back. For the record, I have the first version Mackie Onyx 1220 with Firewire interface and it's been running perfect for years. Currently using it with my i7 4790K at 64 buffers with flawless operation.

Nice Audio, No MIDI is Deal Killer

By Paul Kay

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

The audio features are nice - the implementation is clean, but needing a separate box for the MIDI in and out is unacceptable. This was a significant mistake from a company that rarely makes mistakes.

Exactly what I needed and more!

By Dj Card-1

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

Solid design and construction. Preamps are ridiculous. Def the answer for an electronic musician. I have all my instruments plugged into a mixer which I run into the blackjack. Def preserves my analog sound. I even used the phantom power to record my voice through my headphones and used as a background break in my latest track. Cheap and awesome...and don't worry about the negative driver reviews, I'm running it on windows 7 flawlessly... 6 stars out of 5!

Windows xp sp3 driver nightmare!

By Andre Paquette

from San Francisco, California

Comments about Mackie Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

I'm giving this product 3 stars not because it sounds bad, I think the sound is great for the price. However, I cannot get the blackjack to perform as it should in any of my recording software. I followed the instructions exactly to install the windows drivers before plugging it in to my pc. When I first plugged it in and listened to my vocals from the headphone jack, I was happy, but when I tried to record my vocals in audacity, adobe audition v1.5 or the included tracktion 3 software, I'm having problems that make recording almost impossible. In tracktion 3, I get severe latency after I arm a track for recording. When recording in adobe audition or audacity, during playback the vocals are the wrong pitch & totally off beat, as if my voice has been sped up & chipmunk-ized. After a long night of adjusting the settings in all of the software, I still can't get the blackjack to work right. I've read about the driver issues online & I think this may be my problem. I bought this yesterday (friday night) so I'll have to wait until monday to contact mackie's customer service, but until then, I am not happy. I tried out two of the art preamps & never had these issues. If tech support can help me correct this problem on monday then I will upgrade my rating to 5 stars. One other thing I don't like about the blackjack is that it can only be powered through a usb port, so it can't be used as a stand alone machine without a pc.

Now using the Onyx Blackjack to record a daily radio program. Had serious doubts that my old XP tower's USB component would have enough juice to power it. I was wrong. Downloaded and installed the latest driver and BOOM! The Phantom button worked flawlessly for my two condenser mics and everything functioned perfectly.

I researched other dual plugin recording devices, but my gut told me to go with the Blackjack. Worked well with my DAW (Cool Edit Pro). Fulfills every intended purpose. Kudos to Guitar Center for accommodating me and beating the competitor's price.

Comments about Onyx Blackjack Premium 2x2 USB Recording Interface:

The Onyx Blackjack I purchased was refurbished, and the model is discontinued. I didn't know with this condition that I wasn't getting the traction software, no manual, no USB cable and no box (for me no big deal, but GC should have stated that up front). I use SONAR 8.5 and this product is not compatible so I am demo-ing Reason 8 in Windows 10. Mackie doesn't have an Onyx driver for Win 10. I down-loaded ASIOALL from a website I googled (got that recommendation from GC reviews). Overall the start was bad (SONAR and Mackie), but once I corrected those two problems, it works great and the sound quality is excellent. In summary, for the low price and what I needed the Onyx to do, it is effective and worth it. GW
