I've tried toneport and tascam fw 1082, none of them come close to things. I just got this from guitar center last night with some monster cable. I am glad that I bought this item. It's headphone amp is best i've heard comparing to other interface i've heard from, and it's true 24bit 192khz. For 700 bucks, I think it's best value out there. I really love it.
This is a very nice sounding interface and perhaps perfect for the home studio. While I don't have much experience with high-end preamps, I do have plenty of experience with "prosumer" pres and these are the best I have personally come across in my limited budget. They have a beautiful clarity to them which was something of a revelation to me. As an audio interface it has been solid even on my old G4 (500mhz) & Logic. I have read that some people have trouble with a high pitch wine (a firewire problem not exclusive to this interface) but I have not had that problem. I also own and use MOTU 828mkII with my other setup. I think the MOTU is a fine interface as well with its own plusses but the preamps just can't compare to the Onxy in detail. All in all I am very happy with the 400f and even consider trading my 828 for a second 400f.
I purchased this unit for my home studio in order to expand my variety of mic pres. I heard that the new Onyx pres were very good so I thought I would give them a try. After several mixes I found that these pres are a vast improvment over Makies old pres. The mixes sounded clear even when I piled up over 24 tracks. The unit provides an easy to use firewire interface (easy to use). The preamps provide a great amount of headroom, and clarity compared to others in the same price range. The unit also has inputs so that you can connect outboard gear. This is a very usable unit and I would recommend it as a great addition to any studio. The unit is built well and I believe that it will last a long time if used properly.
