Overview

The Mackie Onyx 1640i professional compact mixer is one of Mackie's Onyx-i series consoles. It offers built-in FireWire, along with a mix of modern features and technologies for live sound reinforcement and analog or digital studio recording - all in a durable, roadworthy package. While the Onyx 1620i is compatible out of the box with most major DAWs, from April 1, 2010, to May 31, 2010, you can get a free Mackie Universal Driver Upgrade downloadable driver on Mackie's website that makes it qualified for use with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

The Onyx 1640i is equipped with 16 of Mackie's premium, precision-engineered studio-grade Onyx mic preamps. Mackie is renowned for the topnotch mic preamps used in their mixers, and today, they're better than ever, with specifications rivaling expensive standalone mic preamplifiers.

Channels 1 and 2 feature high-impedance instrument/line-level inputs so you can connect an acoustic, electric, or bass guitar directly into the mixer, eliminating the need for an external direct box.

Extremely adaptable DAW integration Recording and Mixing

The Mackie mixer's channels, aux sends, or the master L/R can be sent straight to your computer via FireWire for recording. Pre/post EQ taps on every channel allow you to integrate our renowned Perkins EQ into the record path. Plus, a stereo return from your DAW, or iTunes is assignable to the control room section or straight back into two channels panned left and right for mix integration.

Powerful Effects Engine

With six aux sends routable to your DAW, the Mackie Onyx 1640i allows you to use your favorite plug-in as a realtime effect. Just route an aux send to your DAW, apply the plug-in, and assign your DAW outputs to the control room or to a channel strip for instant integration into the mix.

Live Recording
Live sound recording could not be simpler! The 1640i mixing console offers the ability to record individual channels, either wet or dry, for studio-quality multitrack recordings that you can edit and mix down later on. It also lets you simply record the main mix, allowing for immediate creation of CDs right at the gig.

The Mackie Onyx 1640i recording mixer is Pro Tools M-Powered compatible and includes Tracktion 3 Music Production Software.

Tracktion 3 Music Production Software
Tracktion 3 Music Production Software doesn't make you bounce around endless menus and windows to make music. Based on a simple, single-screen interface, the award-winning Tracktion 3 is a fast, powerful, and complete solution for turning your ideas into finished songs. Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640i Firewire Mixer:

I've used a Tascam US-1800 for a few years and loved some of the features of that unit--especially that it sent each individual channel through USB to my DAW. Lately my needs have started to outgrow the Tascam's capabilities and I needed another solution. I looked into the Yamaha MG20XU and a few other USB-capable mixers, but quickly realized that they couldn't send 16 individual tracks through USB, just a L/R mix. So after doing a lot more research I realized that the 1640i looked like the perfect fit for my needs.

Getting it to work wasn't easy. I had to try 3 different firewire cards and 2 cables before I finally got the combination that would work. Also, I understand Mackie doesn't have drivers for the latest PC and Mac operating systems so I guess this could become an issue if I tried to upgrade my PC. (Not supporting your products like that seems like a pretty stupid business strategy, but maybe they just don't want people to buy their stuff).

But now that I have it up and running, I love this mixer. It's just the right size for my SKB mighty gig rig. We just recorded our first session last weekend and it sounded heads and shoulders better than what we were getting out of the US-1800. Awesome mixer.

The Perfect Mixer/Interface for Me

By WILLIAM SAUNDERS

from Honolulu, HI

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640i Firewire Mixer:

I am a longtime Mackie user (original 1604s and a 24x8). I gave up the big mixer and have been using the 12-input ONYX 1200F interface for years. It was great but I was stymied by the cumbersome software mixer. I am used to sliders and knobs but struggled to be 21st Century and do it all in software. I finally got tired of flailing in the purely virtual realm and bought the ONYX 1640i. I am so glad I went back to a great hardware mixer that is also an digital interface. Now I can work effectively in the analog world (with great routing and EQ), yet still have the power of the digital realm. The 16-input firewire lets me keep things clean in and out of the DAW, but with the anolog front end I can work much more effectively. I haven't mixed with it yet but the flexible routing and effects options will make my studio life more productive and fun. The sound is great (as it was with my previous ONYX) and it is compact and very efficient. Don't know why I waited so long. The best of both worlds!

FireWire Mixer

By MICK ROEMER

from Austin, Texas.

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640i Firewire Mixer:

I have used Mackie products before and always been happy with them. Solid, good quality stuff. I wanted the 1640i but it was too big for my studio so I went with the 1620i. I wanted the mixer so I could connect to my Cubase system through FireWire. I've got an Mac Air that only has a Thunderbolt port so I had to use an adaptor. It works but it can be quirky so be advised, but not a big issue. Love the mixer.

Outstanding litte mixer with BIG Sound, Max flexibility

By Timothy Taylor

from Bristow, Virginia

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640i Firewire Mixer:

I got one of these to replace my Fireface RME 800. Though the fireface was excellent, stable, and sounded fantastic, it did not have enough inputs to suit my needs, and I didn't want to have both items taking up space in my racks. I held on to the RME for quite some tim to make sure that the Mackie was up to the task. Boy was it. The Mackie 1640i DOES NOT have automated faders so forget that. At this cost it doesn't matter. What it does do incredibly well is interface with your Mac or PC, and Logic or Pro Tools will be a dream come true for most of you. I use it with Logic Pro, and a host of plug ins. I also have the Mackie Universal Control pro, 2 Xtender Pro's, and a C4 Plug in controller. I am able to use them to complement each other, and have a fully automated mixing desk, as well as a great sounding analog mini mixer that has routing options for 6 effects-and you can use either your rack effects or rout the effects to your DAW-I do both. You can also rotate the input and output module on the mixer to accommodate just about any furniture or rack needs you might run into. I have a pretty nice studio desk, and the Mackie fits into it beautifully. The sound I get is as clean as a whistle with no pops clicks, or sync errors. Mackie had lost me a while ago based on a horrible experience with the 1240 rack unit, and they ended up refunding my money, but they redeemed themselves with this little baby. I cannot say enough good things about it.

Before you buy the Onyx 1604i, read this. The rotoPad is an optional $70 you will need.

By Mario Palumbo

from Glen Burnie, MD

Comments about Mackie Onyx 1640i Firewire Mixer:

The mixer is very nice. I love having real knobs, thatۡs why I opted for the Onyx 1640i over the PreSonus StudioLive. Although there are a couple of things that really disappointed me. Mackie advertise says: ۡ̏Mackieۡs flexible RotoPoḍۡ design, allowing the mixer to be housed in any configuration ۡ from custom studio furniture or live sound installs to even post-production machine rooms.ۡݕ_ Well, be aware that if you want to rotate the pad in a desktop position so that the inputs are parallel to the board, you will have to buy the Mackie Rotopod Bracket Set. It is annoying to find out this need after you bring your mixer to your location, open the box and read the manual. You will then have to spend another $70 plus another week of downtime. If Mackie would write on the box ۡ̏OPTIONAL rotoPadۡݕ_ would make things easier. I called Mackie and explained the problem, they did not even offer an apology. So I get the the Rotopad and find out that my wires in my mixer are too short to reach the position needed. I called Mackie and explained the problem, they did not even offer an apology. Fortunately the Guitar Center offered to get me another mixer and the manager of the Glen Burnie location was very cordial. Another downfall is that the Firewire does not have any input gain so most of the stuff you record ends up being very low. The waveform is so small that you canۡt even see it to edit it. Overall I think it will be a nice mixer as the sound is very clean.
