Overview

The Mackie FreePlay at its core is an extremely portable, personal PA system for performers, presenters and general music lovers. From the stage to the boardroom and the backyard, FreePlay delivers a full range sound with a high-output 8” woofer that adds fullness with a rich, detailed bass response. There are two combo inputs on the rear of the FreePlay to connect a balanced or unbalanced mic, instrument or line-level signal using an XLR or 1/4” connector. That means you can plug in your vocal mics, guitars, keyboards, and more.

The FreePlay is also able to sync with your Bluetooth enabled devices instantly at the touch of a button, so setting up a mic and guitar, then adding some backing tracks from your iPhone is as simple as it sounds. And speaking of sound, the overall sound of the FreePlay is true to Mackie’s long legacy of live sound performance. It’s powerful, with a full-range detail that is well suited for the variety of applications it can handle. At -10dB it has a frequency response from 65Hz to 20kHz with a maximum peak SPL of 114dB, so you’ll have plenty of juice to stand out in the crowd. Right out of the box the FreePlay sounds great, but what fun would it be if you didn’t have control over it? That’s why Mackie included a built-in 4-channel mixer with access to volume, EQ and effects for each channel right from the hardware or via the FreePlay Connect app for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Made To Be Mobile
Portability is FreePlay’s number one attribute. It’s battery operable, so it can go anywhere, at anytime. All you need is the optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can be purchased separately along with other great FreePlay accessories, or you can use 8 standard D-cell batteries. This, along with Bluetooth connectivity, turns the FreePlay into a free-roaming music box that can go from your backyard to the park, the beach, the gym, pretty much anywhere you go. Pairing your iPhone with the FreePlay is easy. There’s a Bluetooth sync button on the rear of the unit, just press and hold until your iPhone recognizes the FreePlay. Once paired, you can stream music from your favorite apps and control it from anywhere in the room. This means streaming music from iTunes, Spottily, Soundcloud, YouTube, pretty much anything. It’s perfect for weddings, birthdays, BBQs, Karaoke night, and more.

Perform or Present
The most common use for FreePlay will be as a personal PA system for street performances or small to mid-sized presentations. For performers, you can play along with backing tracks using Bluetooth audio streaming from your device, and you can also wirelessly control all mic levels, channel EQ and digital effects. FreePlay is also ideal for corporate events where a lightweight, compact set up is required, which is great for restaurants, hotels, schools and more. With either application you have complete control over your sound including channel levels, channel EQ and effects levels. There are 16 great-sounding effects built-into the FreePlay like reverbs, delays and choruses that are perfect for vocals and a wide range of instruments.

Disappointing volume. Returned it.

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA System:

Very disappointed in the volume output of this equipment, especially considering how it was advertised as having a powerful level. It might be acceptable for playing music from your iPod in your back yard, but I don't see how this could work at all for street performance, which was one of the main reasons I bought it. I'm afraid I'm returning it.

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA System:

I am a mobile DJ and wanted to replace a heavy, battery-powered speaker I had been using for 12 years (Carvin S400 StageMate) as my "remote" speaker when I needed music in more than one room. The Mackie fits the bill perfectly. It weighs 12 lbs. (vs. 37 lbs.), has 2 XLR inputs and a mini-jack, and even has Bluetooth capability. It is the size of an 80's style boombox, but packs a nice punch with its 8" woofer. I normally send my music to my remote speaker using a wireless guitar system, but the addition of Bluetooth is an added bonus. (NOTE: The range with Bluetooth is considerably less, about 75 feet vs. 250 feet with my wireless guitar system, but you do get true stereo out of the FreePlay in Bluetooth mode. My wireless guitar system is only mono). I also purchased the optional lithium ion battery (highly recommended, as you get much more playing time and a lighter system than using the 8 "D" cells you would need). So far, at moderate levels, the FreePlay has lasted at least 4 hours (it may go considerably longer - I need to test it out further). The sound is excellent, and can reach at least 110 DB - good enough for backyard or small outdoor events. For a portable Bluetooth system for home, the sound is fantastic - as good or better than Bose SoundLinks, JBL, or Sonus systems, and it is completely portable. It is worth spending the roughly $360 (with battery) I paid for this.

Comments about Mackie FreePlay Personal PA System:

Just what is needed for a very portable PA system for small events! Another use was found for rehearsing my bass guitar parts for church services I play for. I run the MP3 songs from my iPhone through the Bluetooth channel and my bass through channel 1. Then, I run a monitor out for my Mackie DLM12S subwoofer. I can EQ the bass out of the MP3 channel as much as needed so I can hear my own bass better. This would be a great tool for teaching others as you can put two instruments in plus the MP3.
The software APP (Mackie Connect) for my iPhone/iPad works really well. I haven't spent much time trying to figure out the controls on the back of the unit, I suppose I will do that soon.
I had tried two different 'open box' units from my local Guitar Center but had problems with them powering up. They ordered me a brand new unit and it has been rock-solid so far. I also ordered the 'Kickstand' so I could pole-mount the unit.
