I've had this for about a month now. I have to start off by saying even if this was a medicore product in terms of quality, the price alone makes this worth the money. My old rig had a single DBX 266 compressor, a dual channel EQ and a simple EFX processor. These went through a Mackie CFX12. I loved this rig. It served us well, but we needed more compression, more inputs and broader EQ. The DL was like manna from heaven. The sale of my old rig for the DL alone practically paid for the DL but I now have more inputs, better pres, more AUX outs and compression and gate on all inputs as well as compression on all outputs. This baby is chop full of savings!

On top of that, the footprint is a godsend. No more lugging a 60lb box. The DL has all the goodies in a 12lb solidly constructed unit.

I only just set up the WiFi option, but it instantly paid off. I am both the Frontman and Soundman. I can't sing and play with the levels. Sound checks are obviously incredibly important and the Wifi finally allows me the ability to listen to the FOH and make adjusments away from the stage. I set and then forget unless there is some kind of crazy issue.

Another thing that is great is the Mackie Master Fader app itself. Saving the settings is INCREDIBLE. I can save a show's soundcheck, the final settings and then reuse at the same show the next time we perform there. You can save multiple snapshots per show so you can move let's say from an Acoustic portion to a rock portion with different gate/EFX settings between portions of the show. As long as the soundcheck tested each of these, it's just a 3 second recall and go operation. Nice!

Finally, the recording option is terrific. It won't let you record all 16 channels, that's too bad, but I didn't buy it for it's recording so just the option to record a show is great. I am hoping they can upgrade it to provide more channels, but this is still a great option. I pan the mix to use L for vocals, R for the backing band and then use the AUX sends for FOH. It lets me record something I can edit and I don't lose control of my FOH mix.

In summary, I think this is a terrific device with a world of potential. It will only get better as the Master Fader app improvements are released.

I am a working professional engineer, so I am used to using my iPad to remotely mix from Yamaha consoles like the M7CL and LS9-32. This technology is just incredible to me and game changing. I no longer have to rely on other ears when shading a large rig or ringing out a fold back mix. Although I've never been a fan of Mackie and have always seen their gear as overpriced "pro-sumer" quality, I was instantly intrigued when the DL1608 was released. Since I do some small local band gigs as well as perform in my own band, I bought one from GC. The sales guys were all excited saying how awesome it was. Of course these guys were young and surely not working in the industry. I had already downloaded the free Mackie app, Master Fader and got to know it pretty well before buying the $1k hardware. The app is a bit "cartoonish" but seemed to be well designed and responsive. Unboxing the hardware, I found the device to be well constructed, lightweight, and ergonomic in design. I disagree with the other reviewer who thought it would be better if it were metal. The plastic is high impact and keeps the unit light enough to put in a suitcase for an away gig. Getting things going was relatively painless. I used my Airport Express router which worked great. The familiar "wireless" mixing from using the Yamaha gear created similar excitement...... This, unfortunately is where the excitement stopped. The DL1608 is well equipped with 6 Aux Sends. Each has a global PRE or POST button as with a traditional console......BUT..... What is not initially obvious is that regardless of setting the Aux to PRE or POST, the sent signal is ALWAYS POST EQ & POST COMPRESSION / GATE. The PRE or Post simply refers to the FADER only. Calling these outputs AUX sends and not MATRIX sends is false and misleading!!! This issue makes mixing monitors on the Dl1608 nearly IMPOSSIBLE!!! I asked the Mackie engineers on the user forum if any of them had ever mixed live sound and why they would do such a thing in designing the DL1608 this way. My comment was not only unanswered but REMOVED. I tried to mix a band with the DL and the singer kept asking why her monitor kept getting softer. It was the compression that was causing this but I needed the comp to tame her vocal in the FOH mix!!! I was embarrassed of the mixer at that point. Also, as a secondary caveat, the Reverb is absolutely horrid. I found it to be nearly unusable. I returned the DL1608 to GC. They were nice but asked me why I didn't want it. I explained the issue and told the salesman that if this was a firmware issue they would have corrected it immediately. The only Master Fader update included some stupid "Vintage Styled" compressor and gate GUI that were nothing but novelty and toyish. The good news???? Well, I got my $1k back and I will spend it shortly on the Behringer, YES, Behringer Xi16 that is due out next quarter. Since Behringer recently bought MIDAS, they are producing some incredible gear thanks to the inherited MIDAS engineers and R&D. The Xi16 is profoundly better in design with RECALLABLE Preamps designed by MIDAS, Multitrack recording ability and a very "grown-up" GUI. Just download the Behringer X32 ipad app and you'll see. The Xi16 app is very similar. The hardware MSRP is the same as the "under-cooked" DL1608 and the feature set is WAY beyond! Sorry Mackie, I tried to love your DL1608 but simply couldn't.

Great Reliable Mixer - Gets Better with Each Update

    By Tom

Comments about Mackie DL1608 16-Channel Digital Live Sound Mixer with iPad Control:

I have been using this mixer for about two years and use it just about every weekend on gigs. I find it to be very reliable and some of the software updates are like getting a new mixer. I've seen a few complaints from other reviewers because the monitors are pre-fader but not pre-fx. I have no problems mixing monitors with the 1608. Having six aux sends in unusual in a mixer this small at at the price point. I typically use the 1608 to mix a band with Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keys, Trumpet & two vocalists. There are more features in this mixer than I will ever use. Some of the new 1608 mixer views are vast improvements over the software that was initially released with the 1608. I also use the mixer with the iPad mini and my iPhone and everything synchs well. This is a keeper.

Comments about Mackie DL1608 16-Channel Digital Live Sound Mixer with iPad Control:

At first, I thought this was the best thing ever, but then after extended use, several issues and shortcomings made themselves evident.
I love the idea of being able to control sound from FOH with an iPad, but NOT being able to control gain from the iPad seems like it defeats the entire idea of setting levels from FOH. Also, the quality of the gain knobs is iffy. My channel 1 was always significantly louder than any other...
Several of the channels began to fail after a year of use.
The aux outs are not very powerful or clear.
The unit is very tempermental upon startup...very often it would not sync to the iPad and the mixer had to be restarted (after having to run around and shut off all speakers and monitors).
Don't even think of using this in an outdoor venue...you'll lose the wifi control constantly (even with a high end Extreme router)
I didn't realize how poor the sound was until I swapped this mixer out with a loud and clear Mackie ProFX16.
    Avoid.
I prefer having actual knobs and sliders...

Comments about Mackie DL1608 16-Channel Digital Live Sound Mixer with iPad Control:

I replaced my old "dinosaur" analog equipment with this mixer board. After selling the old stuff I had enough money to buy the digital board. It took me 1 day to translate my 30 plus years of analog experience over to the digital world and I took it immediately to my first gig. WOW.....what a dramatic IMPROVEMENT!!!! Why did I wait so long to switch? I've used this thing for 4 months and it still continues to impress. It has everything I need built right in and more than I used to have with my old junk, did I old say junk? That's right! Tiny, lightweight footprint, and killer sound and all paid for from the sale of the old junk. It's like the engineers at Mackie went inside of my head and lifted out all the needs I have as a performer-sound tech. Setup is a breeze, no technical glitches, best live sound ever. There is but one wish I have for the mixer.....Please add a remote footswitch jack so I can toggle my effects in and out during song breaks.

If your looking for a digital board that does a fine job of nothing more than just basic mixing...This is for you. If on the other hand you want something with more fx and more options to grow and add onto at a later date. I would pass on this. But it is a solid little mixer in its own right and would get you through any show.

Comments about Mackie DL1608 16-Channel Digital Live Sound Mixer with iPad Control:

I have yet to read a negative review of this mixer that makes any sense to me. After doing 25 plus shows with this, I do not think it can be beat at it's price point for reliablity, functionality and sound quality.

Only drawback to this mixer is the fact that the pre-amps have to be set manually and can't be saved. Since you have to use the Ipad to control it, it needed to have an App that worked right and therfore this has the best Ipad interface of any digital mixer, and believe me I have tried them all.

There's simply no reason not to leave the mixer on stage and mix from a seat in the audience.

The App has been improved many times over the past year so do yourself a favor and visit Mackies website to view the latest manual so you can see all features it currently has.

As far as the EQs,Reverbs,Delays etc, they all work and sound fine if you know how to use them. HINT: start with some of the presets for the channel reverbs and delay

A little overpriced, but what a great mixer.
A grand plus the cost of an iPad is twice what this mixer is worth.
I bought a used one here at MF and saved a lot.
          Best features are
Wireless control (buy a cheap wireless router)
Stereo recording of practices and shows
Ability to save settings and levels
          Play break music via iPad
          Compact size
          6 Aux
It'd be worth it if the gain settings were savable and it could do
8 or 16 track recording via iPad or external hard drive
It also lacks sub grouping, so creating a drum mix and then adjusting the overall level isn't possible
Buy one used or wait another year or 2 and competition will drive the price down

Comments about Mackie DL1608 16-Channel Digital Live Sound Mixer with iPad Control:

Been using a pair of these at two different venues (both churches) for about a year now, quite satisfied with their performance despite some issues. One is installed Front of House in a multipurpose space, one is in a mobile rig. The mobile console has yet to act up in any significant way, the other has had some teething problems (iPad dock not working, wifi dropping all over the place, all early on). The mobile one has recently had some wifi issues as well.

I've found that the controls are accurate and responsive, even over wifi there's no lag. The App is well thought out, intuitive and free. It's constructed with typical Mackie "Built Like a Tank" ruggedness. Frankly, it offers a lot more than most other small format mixers, including six aux sends (which I use for in-ear monitors on both). The on board effects are pretty good, but I tend to mix fairly dry (save for some reverb and delay).

The point: good, versatile little mixer despite teething problems.
