The Mackie Onyx 1640i professional compact mixer is one of Mackie's Onyx-i series consoles. It offers built-in FireWire, along with a mix of modern features and technologies for live sound reinforcement and analog or digital studio recording - all in a durable, roadworthy package. While the Onyx 1620i is compatible out of the box with most major DAWs, from April 1, 2010, to May 31, 2010, you can get a free Mackie Universal Driver Upgrade downloadable driver on Mackie's website that makes it qualified for use with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

The Onyx 1640i is equipped with 16 of Mackie's premium, precision-engineered studio-grade Onyx mic preamps. Mackie is renowned for the topnotch mic preamps used in their mixers, and today, they're better than ever, with specifications rivaling expensive standalone mic preamplifiers.

Channels 1 and 2 feature high-impedance instrument/line-level inputs so you can connect an acoustic, electric, or bass guitar directly into the mixer, eliminating the need for an external direct box.

Extremely adaptable DAW integration Recording and Mixing

The Mackie mixer's channels, aux sends, or the master L/R can be sent straight to your computer via FireWire for recording. Pre/post EQ taps on every channel allow you to integrate our renowned Perkins EQ into the record path. Plus, a stereo return from your DAW, or iTunes is assignable to the control room section or straight back into two channels panned left and right for mix integration.

Live Recording
Live sound recording could not be simpler! The 1640i mixing console offers the ability to record individual channels, either wet or dry, for studio-quality multitrack recordings that you can edit and mix down later on. It also lets you simply record the main mix, allowing for immediate creation of CDs right at the gig.

  • Outstanding litte mixer with BIG Sound, Max flexibility

    I got one of these to replace my Fireface RME 800. Though the fireface was excellent, stable, and sounded fantastic, it did not have enough inputs to suit my needs, and I didn't want to have both items taking up space in my racks. I held on to the RME for quite some tim to make sure that the Mackie was up to the task. Boy was it. The Mackie 1640i DOES NOT have automated faders so forget that. At this cost it doesn't matter. What it does do incredibly well is interface with your Mac or PC, and Logic or Pro Tools will be a dream come true for most of you. I use it with Logic Pro, and a host of plug ins. I also have the Mackie Universal Control pro, 2 Xtender Pro's, and a C4 Plug in controller. I am able to use them to complement each other, and have a fully automated mixing desk, as well as a great sounding analog mini mixer that has routing options for 6 effects-and you can use either your rack effects or rout the effects to your DAW-I do both. You can also rotate the input and output module on the mixer to accommodate just about any furniture or rack needs you might run into. I have a pretty nice studio desk, and the Mackie fits into it beautifully. The sound I get is as clean as a whistle with no pops clicks, or sync errors. Mackie had lost me a while ago based on a horrible experience with the 1240 rack unit, and they ended up refunding my money, but they redeemed themselves with this little baby. I cannot say enough good things about it.

  • Cubase works well

    This board is absolutely awesome. Per dollar on the table it allows for full multitrack recording with Cubase on a Mac (and w/ several PC's too) with plug n play ease of setup and use. You will have this thing up and running in no time. Sonically silent with intelligent signal path construction, EQ bypass and better than average "Onyx" input stages on a board in this neighborhood is unheard of when it also comes with all the sends and the variable output setups. This thing will route your recording while playing live if you let couldnt be easier. Worth every authorized dealer dollar.

  • Before you buy the Onyx 1604i, read this. The rotoPad is an optional $70 you will need.

    The mixer is very nice. I love having real knobs, that?s why I opted for the Onyx 1640i over the PreSonus StudioLive. Although there are a couple of things that really disappointed me. Mackie advertise says: ?Mackie?s flexible RotoPod? design, allowing the mixer to be housed in any configuration ? from custom studio furniture or live sound installs to even post-production machine rooms.? Well, be aware that if you want to rotate the pad in a desktop position so that the inputs are parallel to the board, you will have to buy the Mackie Rotopod Bracket Set. It is annoying to find out this need after you bring your mixer to your location, open the box and read the manual. You will then have to spend another $70 plus another week of downtime. If Mackie would write on the box ?OPTIONAL rotoPad? would make things easier. I called Mackie and explained the problem, they did not even offer an apology. So I get the the Rotopad and find out that my wires in my mixer are too short to reach the position needed. I called Mackie and explained the problem, they did not even offer an apology. Fortunately the Guitar Center offered to get me another mixer and the manager of the Glen Burnie location was very cordial. Another downfall is that the Firewire does not have any input gain so most of the stuff you record ends up being very low. The waveform is so small that you can?t even see it to edit it. Overall I think it will be a nice mixer as the sound is very clean.
