Overview

The MXR Black Label Chorus is Zakk's secret weapon to thicken up his wall of distortion and add liquid dimension and texture to clean passages. At the heart of the MXR Black Label Chorus is its bucket brigade circuitry-the only way to get truly rich and warm analog chorusing. The MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus pedal's vintage style tones are dialed in by High and Low cut filters and Level, Rate, and Depth controls. For the ultimate in spatial chorusing, hook up 2 amps via the 2 outputs for a wide and sweeping stereo spread. Like all MXR pedals, the Black Label Chorus comes in a heavy-duty housing with durable jacks and switches for a lifetime on the road.

The MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus guitar pedal can be powered by one 9V battery (accessed by removing the effect pedal's bottom plate), a Dunlop DC810DC brick, or MC403 Power system (sold separately).

I was looking for a pedal to capture some old 80ۡs style rock rhythms, from bands like the Police, Rush, Def Leppard. I started looking at the boutique chorus pedals and had a hard time with the $250 price tag. I dug around for 2 weeks, reading reviews, and found the Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus pedal. I couldnۡt really get a good sound example, and looked all over Houston at different guitar stores but no one had it. I liked the Bucket Brigade chip detail and thought that this might be the best purchase for the money, so I bought it at Musicianۡs Friend. I didnۡt realize what it would do to my sound. It can be almost transparent, but add dimension, thickness, and a musical way of altering the equalization so that the guitar sounds better than it does without it. It can also sound hauntingly wobbly and wretched. I started digging playing old Ozzie and Iۡm finally feeling like Iۡm nailing every nuance of the sound that Randy was getting with this chorus pedal. But I can really hear a thick Zakk Wylde sound in this pedal. I was looking for a clean sounding chorus and Iۡm ending up using this thing all the time on an all out Marshall distortion sound. Thatۡs where it shines. Iۡve had it for a few months and Iۡve spent a lot of time listening to it, and Iۡm very happy with it. Itۡs a smooth chorus and it can get somewhat wobbly. Itۡs not a pedal for spaced out sounds, but a pedal to add dimension and real chorusing to your sound. This pedal is a steal for the money, smooth, professional and thick chorusing, and very nicely made. It made me purchase an MXR re-issue Phaser because this pedal performed so well.

I think this is a decent chorus but there are much better ones on the market for only a little more money (e.g., TC Electronic Corona, etc.). I even think my multi-effects pedal (Digitech RP-1000) does a better job with its built in chorus options than this pedal and that is unusual. What I like: good for moody, low-end type chorus with a very clean amp tone. Rings out nice and the filters help shape the sound on the moody stuff. What I don't like: The level needs to be cranked all the way up to get the full effect of the chorus regardless of setting which in turn adds too much gain when combined with other effects such as a reverb. It has very little ring / high tone even with the filters adjusted properly, and when combined with any distorted sounds gets really muddy and robotic sounding (not all chorus effects do this even though they are designed to be used most often used on clean amps). Its not a bad pedal but I also think its a bit overrated.

Really wasn't impressed

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

Huge tone suck/volume reduction in loop and not very impressive in front of the amp. Chatting on the forums, have found similar experiences. Paid 2x more for an Analogman and can't believe how much better it is.

Just Awesome

By Joshua Enos

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love chorus effects and have and have owned numerous pedals from all the major manufacturers. This pedal just stands out above them all. Whether or not you even like BLS or ZW you've still got to try this pedal. If you ask me what the difference is between this and the new MXR chorus that looks just like this the answer is nothing. Dunlop noticed that these bad boys were in high demand and decided that people were shying away from the 'bullseye' so they made a clone with a solid color for the same price (a good one) to appeal to more people.

Great Analog Chorus

By Big Lou

from Dothan, Al.

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is built like a tank. Brushed metal housing begs you to stomp the heck out of it. The booklet comes with some sample chorus settings including Zakk's own settings. This is a pedal that will bring life to your rhythm & lead solos. For the money you can't beat this Analog Chorus pedal. MXR Pedals are all built tough.

Really Good Pedal

By Jeff

from Harrisburg, PA

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is straight Black Label Society. When you dial in "Zakks Tone", you can close your eyes and swear your playing a BLS album. I haven't really used the Power Ballad tone, but when I do, I love it. It gives the tone a nice shiny sound. The only complaint I have is the pedal is somewhat difficult to use and dial in tones. But I think thats only because I don't have the much experience with chorus pedals. Great pedal nonetheless.

A VERY happy customer! You will be too!

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

AWESOME sounding pedal at a reasonable price! (Need I say more?) But really, a very incredible little piece of equipment. Got it a the Guitar Center in Columbus after Christmas. First off, its just as wet, dry, lush, watery, or warbly, (or whatever other discription) as you want it! The high and low cut filters take your sound even further. I have been using it with just one amp, cause thats all I really need. But I have tried it stereo as well, and WOW! If only I had two of the same amp... You can't go wrong with buying this pedal at all. If you still don't think you're ready to put out the hundred bucks for it (like me cause I only work at a local resturant)... its well worth the money and will be for as long as i have it.

great chorus, great buy!

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play hard classic rock with a les paul and a marshall or a mesa. This is a great sounding pedal. Sounds good in front or through an effects loop. Best features are very low noise and transparancy. The tone filters can add a little volume boost and depth which is usefull. I tried out several other pedals and also own a boss. This is the one to buy for low noise, transparancy, boost and range of chorus.

The good, the bad and the ugly

By Jeffrey Ramsdell

from Ludlow,Massachusetts

Comments about MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal:

In a nutshell, this is an excellent sounding chorus pedal.Very warm analog sound, thickens your tone with distortion and sweet sounding with clean tones.Stereo output is awesome-you really get an amazing sound hooked up to two amps. It's a bit noisy though when you turn your guitar's volume all the way down, still some hiss present. That's the only fault I can find with it.If you want Zakks sound like"Live from the Boudakan" this pedal is essential!Sounds amazing! After using other chorus effects, this one blows them all away for a smaller price.
