Overview

The MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal performs like Zakk. Whether on his groundbreaking work with Ozzy Osbourne or with his own Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde's guitar playing is loud, tough, and relentless. Zakk's take-no-prisoners attitude extends to his quest for tone, too. His signature ZW-44 overdrive pedal will turn your clean amp into a heavy, chunky, crunch machine. Or, use it like Zakk does and kick it in front of a dirty amp for a screaming, sustaining lead tone. 3 simple controls-output, tone, and drive-make getting up and running easy, so you can concentrate on your chops.

First off all, I would like to say im not sugar coating this review, this is no one trick pony, it can be used to drive a warm clean channel into a crisp, soulful blusey drive that breaks up very nicely with humbuckers or single coils for a tasty boutique tone. glorious ! The ZW-44 can also be used to tighten up the bottom end and add some sizzle for leaping harmonics of a crunch channel or another distortion pedal(thats how i use it with a boss Metal Zone and its amazing) its a hotter pedal than a more mellow ts9 and its mildly more scooped sounding, sounds great with both actives and passives ,i love both. All in all great pedal, bulit like a tank. Matt Tuck and dime used it that i know of. Highly recomended 5 stars. Happy Playing

I purchased this pedal not to long ago, plugged it in and was expecting a HUGE difference in overdrive sound as I've heard many people say it has and videos shown on youtube with just massive amounts of gain and distortion. My band and I finally got it working to its full capacity and its seriously no better than any BOSS gain booster or equalizer pedal of that sort. Only unique feature would probably be the slight effect it gives for that signature Zakk sound but if your looking for an amazing Soloing pedal to boost your level and give it a great sound this isn't it, well from my experience. It is a definite try before you buy kinda situation.

This is my new Secret Weapon

By Will

from Plano, TX

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This is the key to my stratocaster's new amazing tone. This overdrive beefed up my strat and I've never had a better sound. Everything from just a bluesy o.d., to (in front of a dirty amp) a screaming mass of power. Get this for any style of music.

Brewtal Pedal - A cheap way to hotrod your tube amp!

By ACE

from Washington DC Area

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This pedal does a couple of things really well, and is a great pedal to hotrod clean sounding tube amps at moderate or high volumes. A great pedal for your gig bag if you ever get stuck using a backup tube amp, and need to get good gain and tone in an instant. Most fender and marshall tube amps with high gain channels offer one style of gain and tone which may or may not be your cup of tea. Use this pedal in your clean channel (which usually has the fullest tone) and it will give you a well rounded saturated gain unlike the typical fuzz/distortion box. It felt like a just got my amp modified by a boutique builder. Second, It also works really well as a volume boost pedal to give your leads more gain and power. It can also be used as a boost on high gain channels but you will probably need to turn the gain control way down to avoid squealing or other noise etc. It is not your typical bedroom practice volume fuzz. This is a players pedal for band practice / gig volumes.

Overdrive your tube

By Machine Gun

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This is a good overdrive pedal. It works well with tube amps. Helps bring out solos and pinch harmonics. Not any better than a Boss it's just got Zakk's name on it.

Very Good Pedal.

By MetalheadRedneck500

from Chicago

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

The Pedal does give a great heavy, crunchy sound, and defiantly gives you mostly Zakk's Tone. And Man does it make Pinch Harmonics Scream!! The Only Thing Was that it gave me a lot of feedback, but that could be maybe I always have the gain full cranked, and I also have the gain on the amp cranked, I don't Know. But All In All A great pedal

Wicked Wylde Tone

By Cashboy22

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I got this thing a couple of days ago and let me tell you it is awesome. It makes my Line 6 Spider 2 210 sound like a Marshall. If you want solid lead tone then look no further. A little pricey but sometimes you have to pay to have great tone. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

THE BEST OVERDRIVE I EVER USED!!!

By Rocco von Strummon

from Paris, TX

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This is a very good overdrive pedal, and a very well made one at that. Being a huge fan of Ozzy and Zakk's work, I must say that this pedal makes my Marshall scream just like Zakk's. This is a very good pedal for a very good price. When I use this bad boy with my Fender Strat, I really like the sweet, cruchy buzz of the distortion and HUGE gain. 5 STARS, MAN! *****

An Excellent and Versatile Overdrive Pedal

By Jared

from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I have tried many overdrive pedals recommended by friends and professionals, but I never get what I want out of them. After picking out this pedal on my own, this is definitely my favorite overdrive pedal. When you set the Gain to maximum and using a clean channel you can get a solid crunch out of it which is good for that classic rock sound. This pedal, however, is at its best when it is used as a boost. The transition from a metal rhythm tone to metal lead tone is smooth without the loss of note clarity, you will get feedback after you stop playing, but its not as harsh and as earsplitting as some overdrive pedals. The metal casing on it is also extremely durable, I accidentally dropped it on hard tile and it still works perfectly. Overall this is truly a fantastic pedal; it sounds great, looks great, its durability is great and its simple to dial in your own settings. What more could you want?

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

If your'e looking for a pedal to push a les paul/marshall combo over the top..this is it. The pedal does exactly what it was designed to do. No more, No less..Alone it's a decent tube screamer type overdrive..put it where it belongs,in front of a dirty marshall for solos, and it screams with saturation and harmonics..Period.

Great Pedal To Have!

By LesPaul32

from Saugus, Ma

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

This is my first distortion/overdrive pedal so I don't know as much as most of the other people about this type of stuff. I think this pedal is of very good quality considering it's an MXR. The sound of this pedal gives you is the type of sound I wanted so I can't complain. If you get this thinking I'm gonna sound like Zakk Wylde, this won't do the job by itself. The price could be better, but I bought it used so got it for a little cheaper. Overall if your looking for an overdrive pedal with really cool rock n' roll sound that looks really cool this is the pedal for you. Highly recommended!

Rockin in "A" town

By Patmclean

from attleboro

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I think alot of the people that gave this pedal a bad review were expecting a distortion pedal and it's not. The best way to use this bad boy is put it in front of a distorted tube amp. I ordered this on eBay and went down to GC to try it out. I plugged into the Kerry king jcm800 which sounds great. But this pedal absolutely brought the sound to life. It made the tone way better in getting pinch harmonics was a breeze. I was just blown away by this pedal I couldn't stop playing it. The effects of the pedal are subtle but make a big difference in all the right places. Now I can't wait till mine comes in so I can see how it sounds with my 5150. If you got a tube amp and want some more juice out of it this guy is for you!

Great pedal

By Tim

from Clinton Township Michigan

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

It is a great pedal if you use for what it is ment to be used for. If you want use this pedal for metal you should look elsewhere, but if you use it for its purpose boosting up the amp for solos it is amazing. I played it throw a Marshall JCM 900 and for solos it is just awsome.

Zakk's Overdrive

By MasterMusician077

from Indiana

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

First off you may think when your getting this your going to get a massive Zakk Wylde distorchine sound. But what your really getting is his overdrive not distorchine for more of a Black Label Society tone that he uses. Dont get me wrong this pedal is amazing it can make the tone that you want it to make change it around mix it in with some different pedals and it can work wonders. You just have to find a good sound to make it into. But dont expect a distorchine sound.

good tone.

By poon king

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

like what tim said this is no heavy distortion. Don't waste your money trying to get the heavy sound out of this. This just sharpens up your solos if you already have distortion. It is nice though for That amazing tone.

really good. . .

By qwerty

from nc

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

I got this pedal for my birthday, and it really has what I need for an overdrive pedal. I play it with a Spider 3, and with all the combinations, of models, I can get a lot of tones. It really sounds good when used with distortion, I do this all the time and it really improves your tone. I love the thick distortion you can get with the combination. You can put the gain at 0 and use it as a booster. As a final footnote, I played a Jackson soloist with seymour duncans through a boss OD, and it really didn't sound as good as this through an Epiphone. Buy it.

Bullseye on TONE!!!

By Josh Q

from Palmyra, NJ

Comments about MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal:

The bullseye on this pedal should be centered on the tone knob. As far as actual overdrive is concerned it is par for the course, you can cut out the drive for a boost in TONE or volume or max it out and still retain a lot of note articulation. Most OD pedals in the $40 price range can do this, but this pedal shows it's mettle with the tone knob and helps to justify the price tag (ok maybe not all $100 but close). The range of tone from being completely scooped to bright and snappy has the kind of range you would expect from a 2 or 3 band EQ control. The tone also effects the volume and drive. The review says put it in front of a dirty amp and push the front end blah blah, yeah it does and it brings out some of the pinch harmonics you never thought possible, but this not a one trick pony as I found myself mostly with the tone at 7 and drive at 8 banging out every AC/DC song I know. Compared side by side to the BOSS supper OD it was very similiar and I actually preffer the Boss for just a smooth OD classic rock sound, but the ZW-44's tone variety sets this way apart from the Boss and sets the bar higher for capabilities of your typical 3 knob OD pedal. Let's face it, what is more cool than the Zakk Wylde bullseye design??? Understand it's not for everyone, try before you buy it, but also understand you are not just paying for the Bullseye.
