Overview

The MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive Pedal performs like Zakk. Whether on his groundbreaking work with Ozzy Osbourne or with his own Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde's guitar playing is loud, tough, and relentless. Zakk's take-no-prisoners attitude extends to his quest for tone, too. His signature ZW-44 overdrive pedal will turn your clean amp into a heavy, chunky, crunch machine. Or, use it like Zakk does and kick it in front of a dirty amp for a screaming, sustaining lead tone. 3 simple controls-output, tone, and drive-make getting up and running easy, so you can concentrate on your chops.

First off all, I would like to say im not sugar coating this review, this is no one trick pony, it can be used to drive a warm clean channel into a crisp, soulful blusey drive that breaks up very nicely with humbuckers or single coils for a tasty boutique tone. glorious ! The ZW-44 can also be used to tighten up the bottom end and add some sizzle for leaping harmonics of a crunch channel or another distortion pedal(thats how i use it with a boss Metal Zone and its amazing) its a hotter pedal than a more mellow ts9 and its mildly more scooped sounding, sounds great with both actives and passives ,i love both. All in all great pedal, bulit like a tank. Matt Tuck and dime used it that i know of. Highly recomended 5 stars. Happy Playing

I purchased this pedal not to long ago, plugged it in and was expecting a HUGE difference in overdrive sound as I've heard many people say it has and videos shown on youtube with just massive amounts of gain and distortion. My band and I finally got it working to its full capacity and its seriously no better than any BOSS gain booster or equalizer pedal of that sort. Only unique feature would probably be the slight effect it gives for that signature Zakk sound but if your looking for an amazing Soloing pedal to boost your level and give it a great sound this isn't it, well from my experience. It is a definite try before you buy kinda situation.

From Blues to Metal!!

By federico garcia

from Houston.Tx

i got this pedal from a friend one year ago, and till the date it has never disapointed me, i play this overdrive through a marshall mg 15fx, and that's a 4 chanel amp, (clean, crunch, dist and a "high gain" chanel)and i can play with the pedal in every channel and i always get a great tone depending the channel it goes from a nice blues in clean to a heavy crushing tone in the distotion channel, and it always has a lot of clarity and power. for the price i think its nice for the quality, so if you are looking for an overdrive pedal this is the best choice

excellent overdrive pedal ive played around with some in the past but never bought one because it just wasnt doing it for me..until i saw this one it had a very noticable push very good for lead work as well. this is the od pedal for you if you play rock or metal or even 80s rock/metal hairband music it rocks.

Where is the review I just posted??

By JEREMY SIMMONS

from casper, wy

It's the best overdrive pedal I've ever owned except for the Mesa Boogie V-Twin Pre Amp. But don't buy this expecting Ozzy or BLS levels of gain. It's OVERDRIVE only. It's perfect for use with a BOSS DS-1 Distortion pedal for a little bit higher gain leads.

It's the best OVERDRIVE pedal ever (without actual vacuum tubes).

By JEREMY SIMMONS

from Casper Wy

I love it! The BEST overdrive stompbox I've ever owned (excluding the mesa boogie V-Twin, which is no longer in production). Good tone and good gain, but not a HIGH gain pedal, like one might expect from the Wylde-man. I would not want this pedal by itself for playing heavy metal. I am running this pedal through a Berhinger floor pre amp, and then directly to a mixer, and in the middle I am using a Boss DS-1 (orange) Distortion stomp box as my lead booster. At home I run it through a Fender Mustang II by itself, and it sounds amazing. It sounds pretty good through a large PA without an amp, but like I said, I'm using a pre-amp too. It makes a great baseline overdriven sound, but for playing leads, it needs a little boost. Overall, I got what I was expecting from a high quality, midrange priced overdrive stompbox. It's perfect for my collection.

Great additional kick

By Chris

I ordered this pedal this is not the one you get. You get a diffent looking Black Label pedal. Which looks good and is the same thing. This pedal adds just a little overdrive that makes it sound great without over powering other effects. Way better then the Tube Screamer, or Boss Metal Zone.

An Excellent and Versatile Overdrive Pedal

By Jared

from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I have tried many overdrive pedals recommended by friends and professionals, but I never get what I want out of them. After picking out this pedal on my own, this is definitely my favorite overdrive pedal. When you set the Gain to maximum and using a clean channel you can get a solid crunch out of it which is good for that classic rock sound. This pedal, however, is at its best when it is used as a boost. The transition from a metal rhythm tone to metal lead tone is smooth without the loss of note clarity, you will get feedback after you stop playing, but its not as harsh and as earsplitting as some overdrive pedals. The metal casing on it is also extremely durable, I accidentally dropped it on hard tile and it still works perfectly. Overall this is truly a fantastic pedal; it sounds great, looks great, its durability is great and its simple to dial in your own settings. What more could you want?

Rockin in "A" town

By Patmclean

from attleboro

I think alot of the people that gave this pedal a bad review were expecting a distortion pedal and it's not. The best way to use this bad boy is put it in front of a distorted tube amp. I ordered this on eBay and went down to GC to try it out. I plugged into the Kerry king jcm800 which sounds great. But this pedal absolutely brought the sound to life. It made the tone way better in getting pinch harmonics was a breeze. I was just blown away by this pedal I couldn't stop playing it. The effects of the pedal are subtle but make a big difference in all the right places. Now I can't wait till mine comes in so I can see how it sounds with my 5150. If you got a tube amp and want some more juice out of it this guy is for you!

Staying with a Bad Monkey

By R.T.F.

from Polk City

I owned it and sent it back to G.C. I might have gotten a bad pedal or maybe you just need active pickups like Zakk, but it's very noisy and non-musical. I did like the construction and the feel of the on & off switch.

Not what you think it would be, even better!

By Joe W

from Chicago IL

I am not a metal guy, more a blues/rock. But I always respected Zakk's playing and sound from a far so I tried this out. It is by far the best overdrive I ever used, even better than an Ibanez TS-808. It has such a warm rich sound and is very versatile in the overdrive range. Great for clear open chords with a little crunch or screaming leads. Now, to get the "Zakk" sound you have to run it through an already distorted amp, so for you pure metal heads know that going in. But for the average guitar guy this is a hidden gem!
