I purchased this pedal as a backup to a high dollar pedal I own. I did not want to take the expensive pedal on vacation with me and have it get stolen. What I found was that the '78 is a great buy! It is simple to use and has a nice gain boost feature. More importantly it sounds great with my other pedals and I now use it all the time. So, what do I now do with my high dollar pedal? Nothing, I traded it because I don't need it anymore now that I have my new '78 pedal. FYI, I never usually write reviews but found this pedal was worth taking the time to write this for you. I hope it helps.

I saw some reviews of this little pedal online and in each one, it sounded great. After picking it up, I gotta say, it all depends on what you're playing it through. I'm using a Blackstar HT5 and an Agile Les Paul with Seymour Duncans '59/Jazz pickups and this pedal sounds flat and uninspiring. The reviews I saw online were using something else and it sounded great... so while I won't bash this pedal, beware what you're playing it through as it makes a world of difference.

I am very picky...

By Dave

from Blue Springs, Mo.

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

...and this pedal has not let me down. This pedal will go from a blues distortion all the way to 90's grundge. This pedal does work much better with a tube amp. The solid state sounds a little small with it. The tube amp with this pedal is INCREDIBLE. Very rich and full. Other pedals work well with the 78. Slap a screamer on the tail end of it, and you get a smooth rich distortion (takes a bit of the crunch out) with lots of sustain....Heck Yeah its awesome! Built solid in metal housing, and knobs that work. This pedal should last for many years. Seriously, this pedal is addicting.

Solid Distortion

By WES PREMOE

from Snoqualmie, WA

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This distortion is ridiculously awesome. I have had this pedal for about 10 months now, and it still doesn't cease to amaze. Cutting distortion, while keeping a clear sound so you don't lose your tone or the notes from your guitar. This is not only great for classic rock, but I use this pedal for metal and punk music as well and I still prefer it over all other distortion pedals. I also use this as a bass distortion too and it has a great driving sound that is perfect for leading bass lines. This low price on this thing is the cherry on top. If your looking for a distortion pedal, stop here and add this bad boy to your cart!

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Does Thin Lizzy and Bad Company, through to Early Metallica. At lower gain settings, it sounds amp like, and can do overdrive and boost. Higher gain settings takes you easily to vintage metal. Awesome sounding tones, low noise floor (with humbuckers), easy to dial in, looks cool, durable design, metal casing, great price.

    The One!

    By Tim Estridge

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is the One. It can that blues crunch to 80's hairband distortion. I have a Boss BD-2 Blues driver. It can sound the same but with more mids. It is definitely hot rodded as MXR web site suggest it is.

Your Search For Good Distortion Ends Here!

    By Adam C

    from S.A., TX

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought this pedal blindly without trying it out at the store. When I tryed it out at home(w/ an 2004 es333 and a borrowed blues jr.), I was shocked at the tones it had. It has a nice overdrive tone from 0 gain to about 12 o clock. Passed that its amazing amp-like tube distortion and passed 3 o clock the thing can chug(without hiss or hum), in facted its the only pedal I am happy with dimming out. The crank button offers a compressed tone thats nice for "sparkly up" notes. You can play anything on this, and can make you feel like it's your own reliable old "go to" amp(especial for me who has never owned one)! The tone is something else as it goes from two extremes either high treble or very bass driven but can be easily tamed. I was about to invest in a Wren and cuff tall font fuzz before this pedal but now I think I found what I was looking for. No review or video can do this pedal justice so I suggest you try one for yourself and dont be afraid to mess with the guitars volume knob!(their are awesome tones you can be missing out on)!

    Excellent Distortion

    By Isaac Lamb

    from Isaac Lamb, Indiana

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

When I was searching for this pedal I was looking for a good classic rock tone, a heavy overdrive/light distortion. This pedal certainly matched that description and went further. This is the first MXR pedal I've owned but I can definitely say it was a pleasurable experience and I will be buying more. Ok, on to the pedal. Distortion quality is very good. Not too much feedback, but just enough if you crank it. I don't use the crunch very much, but it does make your tone a little... crunchier. Mixing the tone and distortion controls give you a plethora of sound possibilities, everything from light overdrive to saturated, fuzzy distortion. Extremely versatile. The maximum volume is pretty high; I have it about 9 o'clock most the time, never above 12. On my chain, I combine it with my Bad Monkey to get a really good, bright, sustained distortion, perfect for my needs. My final word: it's a very versatile pedal, worth the money.

    The name speaks for itself!

    By Louden Sheffer

    from Montague, MI

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

So this week I went off on a "journey" to find a distortion pedal that would do what my Boss DS-1 couldn't do. It seemed as if over time the DS-1 only sounded like a light fuzz tone. After doing a bunch of research, I tested this stompbox out, and man does it sound killer! The possibilities are endless for the tones this unit can produce. This pedal can imitate the sounds of anybody from Rage Against the Machine, to Metallica, to Joe Bonamassa! If you've always wanted those Randy Rhoads tones, then look no further, because this pedal models his signature sound very nicely! The crunch button on this is pretty nifty as well, and it seems as if it will drive this pedal to making classic metal tones. Despite the heavy tones, the sound from this pedal is very crisp, and clear, and the pedal itself doesn't give off that nasty access noise. I am very pleased with the pedal, and it being a Dunlop product, I know that this will last for quite some time. To top everything off, the Custom '78 Distortion has glow-in-the dark knobs, which (obviously) makes it easier to adjust in a dim room.

    It was a 50/50

    By Cynthia Musser

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this pedal hoping to give my guitar a bit more bite, it gave it bite, just not as much as i was hoping for. Also when you turn it on it gives off a very annoying and loud white noise, that if u turn the output up more than 25% becomes very powerful feedback, which makes using it hard for me. all in all its a good product and i think i may have just gotten a damaged and/or flawed pedal. MXR is definitely still the company i go to for all my effects peddles

Really versatile good for blues, rock, jazz, hard rock.

    By ALEX SIMUNDZA

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I went into guitar center looking for an overdrive pedal. Played through this little box of rock and was blown away. This pedal gives a great overdrive tone as well as a heavy distortion. My rig is a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue and a fender standard fat strat. Im mostly a blues player, and i was skeptical about it but, it sounds amazing. The best sounds i get out of this pedal for blues is slapping that toggle switch on the neck pickup, turning the tone at about 1 o'clock and the distortion at about 2-3 and it gives me a great warm overdrive tone. The extra crunch button is great for playing on my humbucker. It gives it a great dirty gritty feel which is perfect for that good hard rock and classic rock sound. Overall I'm very satisfied that I bought this pedal.

I use this to push my tube amps farther at a reasonable volume. The pedal sounds outstanding with tube amps when being pushed and sounds great on clean as well. It can take my amps and Strat all the way from SRV / Clapton tones to Van Halen.

I've tried several overdrives/distortions to push my American Deluxe Strat w/ S1 switching (single coils) to create humbucker tones from the 70's (ZZ Top, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd) and this pedal did the trick while maintaining a natural tone.

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is fantastic. I absolutely love it. I play primarily blues and occasionally heavier metal and classic rock. By itself the Pedal can get a fantastic blues tone and then switch to a heavy metal tone very easily. I actually feed it through a 808 vintage tube screamer for my leads and solos and its an absolutely killer combination. But you don't need to have multiple pedals for it you can absolutely use only this pedal and put out a killer tone. I HIGHLY recommend this pedal. I don't even write reviews for anything but I felt that people needed to know of this amazing and AFFORDABLE pedal.

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I picked up one of these beauties after trying a bunch of units at my local GC. It was the last one I tried and I stopped right there. At the lower settings it gives me that great tube growl without having to turn my Amp up to earsplitting volumes. At higher settings the depth and saturation increase without becoming muddy or loosing definition. If you are a metal head you'll probably not want this one, but if heavy blues, rock, or covers are your thing you will love it. The crunch button adds a nice boost overall especially in the upper ranges without adding the harshness of other units. Built like a tank with battery or AC power and at this price it's a steal. I've even used it with my acoustic/electric with interesting results. Go get one!

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

As long as this puppy doesn't break, this will have been an amazing buy. Its more geared toward classic rock tones though if you dial it in right it's perfect. I'm using this as a backup to my voodoo lab sparkle drive so I can have a little more hair to my sound. I couldn't be happier. With the price involved reliability may be the only issue, but with it being mxr I doubt i'll have any problems. Great tone, great sustain. I don't notice too much going on with the crunch button on, but I've just gotten it recently and for what it's given me I couldn't be happier. By itself You can get just about any alternative rock tones, and with the distortion turned all the way up (along with maybe another od/distortion) you can get some sweet fuzz sounds ala the black keys.

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I love this pedal, it gave my board the sound I was searching for. It does anything and everything I ask of it. With iit dialed all the way back, my 2X12 solid state Marshall sounds identical to my old Vox AC30, at 3 O'clock I get a great plexi tone. I run a BBE Green Screamer in front of it and the sustain boost is amazing. Playing a late 80's Les Paul Jr and Les paul special I utilize the P90's to their potential. I tested it side by side against a Red Witch at the store, blew it a way, a third of the cost. Three times better than the Boss, built like a tank. I will always dislike where the AC input is though. Bare in mind, this is not for death metal, no drop C tuning or anything that extreme they make pedals for metal, look that direction, not here. Even though the pedal says Crunch, that only adds to the low end not enough to handle the extreme. Perfect for everything else though, you can dial in about any other style, blues to punk.

          Excellent little pedal,

          By Nick Perry-Guetti

          from West Linn, OR

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

and the word "little" is used with precision; the fact that it's much smaller than any pedal around it on my board is the only criticism I have: it's easy to miss with the foot. On the other side of that, I really wonder how Dunlop fit the circuit for such a sweet-sounding distortion in such a small box. It's also the most inexpensive pedal I've ever bought new. On to the sound: the distortion sounds great, creamy & biting in equal measures, and very controllable with a wide sweep from min to max, highly responsive to finger dynamics. The output is quite hot, with twelve o'clock being a considerable gain boost for my P90s; I keep it approximately at 10:00. The "crunch" button is sweet-sounding, and I honestly just leave it on all the time, no reason not to. I bought this as an upgrade from my Boss OS-2, which was a bit too dirty and compressed for my taste. The M78 is nearly as cheap and 200% better. It mixes well with a compressor itself, and putting it after a good Tube Screamer produces a rich but well-behaved fuzz. Eye as well as ear candy with that hot cherry red paint and mesmerizing blue LED "cruch" button, you will have to keep your under 3 year old from trying to eat it.

          Harmonically Rich

          By Daniel Busch

          from BKLYN, NY

Comments about MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The '78 Distortion pedal is one if the best distortion pedals made by one of the best pedal makers. It has a very harmonically rich sound that warms up beautifully on the low end of the tone. The high trebly part of the tone spectrum is pleasantly high without losing tonal character or becoming shrill. Turning on the "crunch" button takes away some of tonal transparent qualities of the pedal and replaces it with a bit of a boost (not too much) and adds a lot of tonal color. This pedal sounds great with humbuckers and single-coils alike. For me, the pedal sounds especially well with the tone at 10 o'clock with a maple neck, alder body strat. It brings out a beautiful warm "woody" character. The distortion turned all the way up is very very smooth without "flattening" or squashing the tone. The construction of the pedal is solid. It's a nice looking pedal too. I have owned and played several distortion pedals over the years and this one is one of the best and is a really great value for the money!!

This pedal was a great addition to my rig, very dirty and gritty, you can really get that classic 70's tone, and if you mess with it enough you can get a high gain metal sound out of it. Great pedal, affordable price, can't go wrong there.
