The MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal is a classic overdrive circuit with modern modifications for improved performance and versatility.

For added flexibility, there's a 100HZ cut and boost control that allows for a more focused EQ when cut, or a beefier tone when boosted. The Bump switch engages an alternate EQ voicing that boosts the lows and mids. Put it in front of the '78 Custom Badass Distortion for a slew of amp-like gain structures that won't mask your tone.

Features
  • Classic overdrive circuit modded for improved performance and versatility
  • 100HZ cut and boost control allows tonal fine-tuning
  • BUMP switch engages alternate voicing for a low and mid-range boost

To keep this as quick as possible... It's a very transparent pedal. I prefer to not use pedals that color natural amp tone too much. I've learned to use the dirt channel, post almost maxed out pre set to my desired volume level which is usually enough for a very slight natural break up. This way it drives my power tubes harder making a warmer wet signal. Tons of EQ possibilities and can definitely gets in the TS territory as well as keeping the gain down using it as a boost for accent other dirt pedals or just push the amp for a lead tone. I've had two of these now selling my first one and with regret recently bought another. Take the time to tweak both the pedal AND your amp to figure out what works for you. If you're thinking about a TS but want more versatility give this a try. You'll dig it!

I use a FNDR strat HSS into a PV Delta Blues 115 (5751s in the preamp section and a 12ax7 as the P.I. )

I recently purchased an MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive and really liked the tone but was extremely disappointed in the quality of the pedal. In regard to the tone it was close to the sounds I get from my MXR distortion II. The tone functions like the filter on the MXR II and the 100hz cut resembles the resonance. I am not sure if that was the intent but the color of the label on the box and the instruction manual are very close to the color of the MXR Distortion II. Overall when the pedal worked I was very satisfied with the tone and transparency. The problem I had was the that the LED for the footswitch and the bump no longer worked after 10 minutes or so of play. This still occured with a change in the battery and using DC connection. The tone of the pedal also changed once the LED was no longer working. In fact it sounded like a pedal with a low battery. Since I liked the pedal I exchanged the pedal for another MXR M77 and had the same problem with the second. Unfortunately a nice pedal with great tone but not the quality I would have expected from MXR.
It would be a better value if it worked

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I used the GT-OD also called the Classic Overdrive on an album, loved it, had to see what else MXR can do. The MXR Custom Bvadass Modified O.D. is one of the worst named, and ugliest pedals I have ever seen. I wish they could have just called it the "Custom Overdrive" or something easy. Also people get confused about 100 Hz. It's really just a bass knob, that's all it means. If they called it "Bass" and "Treble" I think people would be quicker to grasp those two knobs functions. In use, the stock circuit is quite transparent with plenty of gain and volume on tap. The Bump button kicks up the mids and bass for a really in-your-face rock tone. This excels in front of a slightly driven tube amp. Another winner from MXR. A near-miss if you focus too much on how it looks. Just plug it in, rock out, and the quality of the tone will be obvious. Now I only need to add a GT-OD to complete my MXR collection. A Tube Screamer for the modern player. Something about these MXR ODs is really smooth and fat to my ears, but with plenty of aggression. Really goes beyond the classic 3-knob OD pedal in a meaningful way.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased this pedal about three months ago, and wanted to give myself some playing time before commenting on it. I usually don't review products, but this little pedal has qickly become a favorite of mine, so I felt that I should.

Just to give a reference on what use this pedal for...I play a metal and hardcore punk style music, and play through a Marshall JCM 900 with a Strat fitted with EMGs

I have been using the Ibanez turbo tube screamer for years, just as a boost for leads and such. But recently that pedal has been having some issues making it unreliable for live performances, so I decided to try something different. And I'm glad I did.

This pedal impressed me right away with wide range of tones. But thats what I love most about it. I really love my Marshall tone, and don't want a pedal that will change it. And this one doesn't. If you have it dialed in right, it will give you the boost you need without compromising your amps tone. Or, If you want to change your tone, this pedal has a nice range of solid options. It can do anything from blues, to rock to metal.

I tested it side by side with my tube screamer, and this thing, to me, sounds so much better.
I don't really need much gain out of this pedal, as I run all of it out of my amp. So for me, 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up is plenty. The 100HZ knob is great for dialing in many different tones, but I keep it dialed in to match my amps tone. The bump button is great for some added bottom end which is nice for some of those fast chugging parts. This thing sounds so great, that I now use it for more than just boosting leads.

      Bottom line, this pedal rocks!

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I have an Ibanez TSA15H, which has a tubescreamer built in. Compared to the M77, the tubescreamer is a bit darker and lacks definition IMO. Keep in mind that I usually use these overdrive pedals with the gain down and volume all the way up, in order to drive other distortion pedals or the front of a distorted amp, for tight palm muting tones. Even so, I think the M77 sounds better than the tubescreamer when used on a clean channel. The M77 also has many more features, is very versatile, and is also the same price as the tubescreamer, which makes it a no brainer for me.

Great vintage overdrive tone. Well balanced without the overbearing bass or treble you see in some other overdrive pedals.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is super cool! You can go from transparent barely breaking overdrive to full on grit and that is amazing! You can also do so much with the bump switch. With the bump switch off you get mainly a transparent really controlled drive which is awesome, but when you press the bump switch it just makes it such a unique overdrive that cuts through the mix and makes it a really fat drive! And to make all this in that small of a pedal is amazing! Better than the OCD and fulldrive in my opinion!

100 hz knob is excellent. Overall a excellent choice when used with humbuckers. I prefer a tube screamer with a strat by this boy works great with my SG. Maintains a lot of the beef and girth. If your lookin for that classic overdrive tone but find the tube screamer too thin this is your pedal. Make sure your using it to boost/overdrive a relatively clean sound. That's where it excells

used alone on clean channel, or to boost gain channel, or use on clean channel with dist. pedal. If you cant get a great sound using this o.d. pedal, then you either dont know what your doing or there is something wrong with your set-up.I love the extra option of the low end knob and the button as well. this thing sounds really good just by its self. plenty of gain and volume.

I have had this overdrive for close to 2 years now, and I have to say that I purchased and used quite a few different dirt pedals in that time but this is the only one that I consistently turn to for just about everything, It works great as a boost for leads and thickens up my rhythm perfectly. I use it with a Telecaster and a Les Paul with a Tubemeister 36 and also into a Podhd 500. With either setup I have been able to get great sound with a little bit of adjusting. The 100hz knob gives it the ability to go to almost any overdrive sound I could want. Its solidly build and is an excellent looking pedal to top it all off.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

My earlier review of this pedal was negative, and was probably a result of two factors: the fact that TS type pedals with their pronounced mid-hump are not my favorite kind of sound, and that I had to do a lot of tweaking to get a useable sound out of it. But to be fair, it does have useable sounds and if you're into the TS sound, this is definitely a good and versatile choice. The key is the 100 hz knob, which can turn an anemic and nasal sound into a pretty nice tubelike breakup. The bump switch is useful to go from rhythm to lead sounds, but the button (instead of footswitch) choice by MXR is curious - it's not the most useable in a live setting to go from rhythm to lead lines. My advice is spend time with the knobs. Also, like most OD pedals, it likes at least a little breakup from the amp. Overall a solid product from MXR.

Comments about MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Honestly, I don't understand the hype. I've played this through two tube amps, a 15-watt Laney LC15 in my living room and a 40-watt Fender BDRI in band rehearsals and at gigs, and in each situation it has been unpleasantly nasal and unconvincing as an "amp-like" overdrive. My Earthquaker Devices Speaker Cranker, which costs about the same new, sounds almost identical to a cranked tube amp. The MXR sounds like an imitation, and not a very good one. There are some fantastic overdrives out there, many by boutique companies, that cost about the same or a little more. I would recommend Earthquaker Devices or Catalinbread. By the way, I'm no pedal snob. I love my EHX LBM and Germanium OD, and also my MXR Dyna Comp.
