Oh, and ungodly amounts of gain. True bypass, gotta love it. Average battery life and built like a tank. Easily does any form of metal.

I got this pedal about a year and a half ago and was really looking forward to using it in my chain of effects. I was surprised as to how processed and "fake" the tones sounded. There wasn't any warmth or character to it from my experiences with it. It was just really loud and then just really loud some more. Now, grant it, I'm not a Metal style player. I ventured to get this pedal because I was in need of some thicker boosts to my amp, and I got way more than necessary. However, I believe, back then, my issue with my amp or rig was my own fault for me not taking the time to dial in a precise tone, but in my opinion this Fullbore Metal Pedal is too much even for metal players that I know. The best route to take, in my opinion, from playing heavier style music for about ten years (I'm 21 now) is to go with warm, , true bypassed, analog, overdrive pedals added to your dirty channel of your amp. Doing this gives it warmth, and the character of tube - like crunch tones (ex: Marshall, Orange, Bogner, Mesa, etc). Guitarists like Zakk Wylde and even the guys from Killswitch Engage don't use a Fullbore type metal pedal, as some may think. Metal is more in the technique, not all in the gain of an amp in my opinion. I wouldn't buy this pedal. Get OD pedals.

True to its name

By Andrew

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

MXR Fullbore Metal pedal works great in my rig (LTD KH-602 with EMG pickups -> MXR Fullbore ->Fender Blues Junior). I was able to get nice Metallica chugging metal tone with all knobs close to 12 o'clock (bass at 1:00; high at 11:00). I didn't have to fight the fizzy sound that some other reviewers mentioned. I think that to get full-bodied metal tone you need to run this pedal on a bridge humbucker (preferably, on an active pickup) into a decent TUBE amp. I can see how one can dial in fizzy tone running it into some solid-state amp from a single-coil neck pickup... Tube amp and active humbucker will smooth out all the fizzyness and you'll get the sound that MXR fullbore was designed to give you - great high-gain distortion with good note definition.

GREAT PEDAL

By Devon

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

Great pedal!!!! I have mine set up for a Tom Sholz (of boston) sound, without having to go buy a rockman sustainor! Very nice sounding, the gate works like a charm! It even looks cool too. I bought a power supply cable so I wouldnt have to keep buying batteries, but I shouldve bought a power brick instead because I plan on stocking up on the MXR's!

Ice Pich Heaven

By EastNashRocker

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This thing had all the potential and certainly enough knobs to be flexible. Unforunately even with the highs all the way down this thing was a one-trick bright bright pedal. I loved the bass know and the sweepable mid. The gain knob turned things like string articulation into mush pretty quick but thats just my opinion. I kept the high and gain knobs all the way down and had the sweepable mids cut at about 2K where things were still a little high end harsh/megaphone like. I traded this for the Hardwire TL-2 which is tremendously more flexible/useable. Not only does the TL-2 have all the same knobs as the fb metal it also has great highs and this pedal 'plays' well with others! Because the gain was so mushy on the fb metal any additional pedal sound mushy as well. With the TL-2 I can turn on my OCD pedal and it lifts my sound up a notch when needed. After I took this pedal back I heard that it actually works great for bass players (which I am not) but I should have let our bass player give it a shot.

Rough start but great ending

By Alex M

from Peru, IL

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

I purchased this mxr fullbore distortion pedal about a month and a half ago for $84 after listening to many reviews on YouTube. But unfortunately for me, i bought it over the internet and never tested it out at my local Guitar Center, which doing this is a must if you wish to buy this pedal. I was expecting everything i saw in the reviews that i liked but this is one pedal where you have to tweak both the pedal and the amp to get the best possible sound and tone out of it. After about 20 minutes of tweaking the pedal and still horrid tones coming out of it, i gave up and decided i was going to take it back for a refund so i just let it sit for awhile. After just letting it sit there for a month i decided to give it one last try and see what i could get out of it. This time instead of tweaking just the pedal, i changed my clean tone settings around a bit to work with the pedal rather than against it. After about 10 minutes i found a tone that i fell in love with. I have a line 6 spider 4 120 watt and my settings for the amp are: red clean channel, gain-3 o'clock, bass-Noon, mid-11 o'clock, treble-Noon, channel volume-full. For the pedal: volume-9 o'clock, frequency-10:30, gain-full, low-9 o'clock, mid-3 o'clock, treble-full, noise gate-on(optional), scoop-on. These settings don't suck out all of your tone like all of the other settings and i think it goes good with thrash metal, or any type of metal for that matter.

Truely Fullbore Metal

By Steven Taylor

from Lemon Grove, California

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

The fullbore metal is for any metal guitarist that wants a fully customizable sound, and it also helps that it has a built in noise gate. It's high gains and adjustable frequency allow for intense and crunchy distortion. I use it and because of the noise gate, how easy it is to customize, and that its analog, I get a heavy, clear metal tone that rules

Staple on my board

By Andrew

from North Arlington, new jersey

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal is metal! Excellent tone! I have never had these problems that are on here. The bass is a tad lacking but I always have bass high on my amp so it doesn't matter. I think when people have problems with the eq, it's because they dont take into account their amps eq. I would recommend this to any metal player. Also, this is a pure, unquestionable distortion pedal. It shouldn't be used to give gain to a dirty channel. Also the gate is good, but I personally don't use it unless I want that gap between notes for added rhythm an I usually don't. Great buy

Best Distortion Pedal Ever

By Dan Spencer

from Boston Ma

Comments about MXR M116 Fullbore Metal Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal:

This pedal was THE greatest $100 i have ever spent. There was some twiddling of the dials involved, but the end result is absolutely amazing gain. It can go from a tight, high gain to house shaking (literally) bottom end. Bear in mind that this is not the pedal you want for anything other than hardcore face melting metal. but if that IS what you are looking for, this pedal goes above and beyond to do the job. 5 stars isn't enough in my opinion!
