Alot of knobs, but they all serve a purpose. The Frequency knob adds 'grit' to your tone. The noise gate feature is cool if you play at freakishly high volume settings. Oh, and ungodly amounts of gain. True bypass, gotta love it. Average battery life and built like a tank. Easily does any form of metal.

I got this pedal about a year and a half ago and was really looking forward to using it in my chain of effects. I was surprised as to how processed and "fake" the tones sounded. There wasn't any warmth or character to it from my experiences with it. It was just really loud and then just really loud some more. Now, grant it, I'm not a Metal style player. I ventured to get this pedal because I was in need of some thicker boosts to my amp, and I got way more than necessary. However, I believe, back then, my issue with my amp or rig was my own fault for me not taking the time to dial in a precise tone, but in my opinion this Fullbore Metal Pedal is too much even for metal players that I know. The best route to take, in my opinion, from playing heavier style music for about ten years (I'm 21 now) is to go with warm, , true bypassed, analog, overdrive pedals added to your dirty channel of your amp. Doing this gives it warmth, and the character of tube - like crunch tones (ex: Marshall, Orange, Bogner, Mesa, etc). Guitarists like Zakk Wylde and even the guys from Killswitch Engage don't use a Fullbore type metal pedal, as some may think. Metal is more in the technique, not all in the gain of an amp in my opinion. I wouldn't buy this pedal. Get OD pedals.

7 stars worthy!

By CHRISTOPHER HITE

from munford, TN.

I am beyond impressed, this pedal is worth every cent, just received it today, immediately hooked it on my pedal set up and plugged it in, then turned on my amp and just simply strummed a chord and the response literally blew my hair back, if you want a pedal for genres ranging from grunge to metal this is THE pedal for you. (so good in fact i may just sell my other metal pedals since this one out performs them easily.) thank you greatly guitarcenter, never cease to meet a musicains expectations.

Great pedal

By BENJAMIN MCELROY

from New Orleans

I have had this pedal for over two years now and this is a great pedal. It can do almost any metal tone (from a Metallica like sound, a pantera like sound, or a more slayer like tone). By easily tweaking the pedal, you can find an awesome sound to dial in. As for the people that are having to tweak for a long time to get any sort of pleasurable tone....buy a better amp. This pedal has very expansive dynamics and complex harmonics to the tone. If you crank everything up and have an inferior amp, it will sound very bad. I have a number of different style tube amps from a fender style clean to a plexi mod and I can get great tones out of all of them with this pedal without much effort and with much enjoyment. I also do have a fender frontman 25 and this amp just cannot handle the dynamics of this distortion above volume 0.25 . If you have a half decent amp, this baby will sound great. If you still haven't figured out that tubes are no doubt the way to go, you will hate this pedal.

Fullbore

By Anthony Smith

from Chicago IL

Today I went to my local guitar center to just look around with a friend while he gets a wah pedal. While wondering around, I stumble upon this glorious pedal. As an amateur bass player, I had little knowledge about pedals, but I decided to try it out anyway on a bass guitar through a Mark Bass amp. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life. It is a VERY accurate pedal, where it even caught the low signals of the bass, very light and compact, wonderful controls, and what topped it off was for the fact that it was on sale for $15 for some reason. It was completely worth it! Comes with built in noisegate feature, three EQ knobs, gain knob, frequency knob, and a "scoop" button. Very versatile, easy to carry, lots of features, guitar player or not, who wouldn't buy it?

Amazing little pedal

By Kyle J Ferris

from Arizona

I have bought numerous distortion pedals over the years. This pedal is the one I have been search for, many people over the sites have been giving this pedal bad reviews. The problem is most people do not know how to connect pedals in their proper order and this has a lot to do with the results. But anyway, I can get any tone I want out of this thing and I could not be happier. Considering I was also looking at the Bogner but that pedal is so over priced. The added noise gate is awesome which the sensitivity has to be set on the inside of the pedal. When you play with the gain past twelve you will need it trust me this thing is a raging beast it can do every tone you could imaging if setup correctly. If you are into Nu-metal or anything like it this pedal is for you. When I use it through my Baritone guitar the chugging is insane you can almost feel it in your chest from this tiny pedal!

Custom Tailor Your Distortion

By William Vinson

from Statesboro, GA

This pedal is great. It may have 6 knobs but each one serves a purpose. It allows you to completely tailor your tone. The built in adjustable noise gate is great. It makes syncopated riffs super tight and there is no extra noise. This pedal far surpasses any other distortion pedal I have tried especially when using my 7 string. It's the only pedal that can bring out the low end of the 7 and still keep the notes crisp and tight and not muddy. Also the all metal housing makes this pedal look and feel like it's made for gigging. This thing is built like a tank and is super sturdy. If your looking for over the top high gain distortion that you can really custom tailor to your sound then this is the pedal for you.

Amazing!

By Mark Tully

from Bethel, CT

When I got this pedal, I was blown away by the amount of gain this little guy offers. Every knob serves its own purpose, and does it well. I'm personally not a fan of the gate setting, however, because it sometimes cuts off my playing at the beginning, which gets irritating, but you can adjust it, and there are so many different combinations you can make with this pedal, you'll never get bored with it! It's really easy to use; all you have to do is step/push on the button at the bottom, and to save the battery life, just take the plug out, and plug it back in when you're ready again. And, lastly, it just looks good; it's very distinct to other MXR pedals and catches the eye very easily. It's well worth the money.

Best Distortion Pedal Ever

By Dan Spencer

from Boston Ma

This pedal was THE greatest $100 i have ever spent. There was some twiddling of the dials involved, but the end result is absolutely amazing gain. It can go from a tight, high gain to house shaking (literally) bottom end. Bear in mind that this is not the pedal you want for anything other than hardcore face melting metal. but if that IS what you are looking for, this pedal goes above and beyond to do the job. 5 stars isn't enough in my opinion!

W.O.W Crazy not to have one

By Josh Opryszek

from McHenry, Illinois

WOW I picked this up today after my Digitech Heavy Metal pedal finally stopped working and I was blown away. This pedal is fantastic! I play through a high gain amp so amount of fuzz and feedback is quite a bit and the built in noise gate clears it right up. As soon as I plugged it in I set it to what my previous settings were and it screams! I threw some reverb on to play a little Death and it was awesome! I see myself playing these until something better is invented and if something better is invented I'm sure it will be by MXR
