I've had this for over a month now and I think it is a great tool. I had A-B'd it against the SANSAMP BASS DI at Guitar Center, spent about an hour fiddling with both of them. In the end, I was much happier with the MXR because of the variety of sounds that I can get out of it, whether clean or with distortion. Also, it has more flexibility because of the 2 channels and the noise gate. And it it costs less to boot. I play in cover bands and I need to be a bass chameleon, this box really helps me add more flavors of sound. With the clean channel, I can accentuate the sound of my bass when I need to, tweaking on the tone knobs as needed. With the distortion on, I can dial in a controlled distortion for Geddy Lee sound, more top end for Incubus, and muted fat cigar smoking distortion like RATM. Nice and compact and solid.

This thing is the BOMB!!!

By Mike G. formerly of the Degenerates

from Manchester, Ct

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

Playing live has always been a challenge. From the sound man to the stage volume. Tone is always tough to set in different rooms. But with the M80, you can blow up any room. Bypass the your amp head & go direct to the main board with it. I don't use the distortion, but the clean channel is unbelievable. I used to love SANSAMPS, but this thing kills them. Add on an Aphex Bass Exciter, and BAM, everyone will want to know what you got. The M80 is bullet proof, great tone, boost, etc. You can't go wrong with one of these. Even if you don't use pedals, this will compliment any rig.

Great Pedal!!

By JayM

from Binghamton, NY

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I was always skeptical about using pedals and was adamant about the natural sound from my bass. I eventually got prodded enough and bought the M-80 after reading TONS of reviews on many similar boxes. All I can say is WHAT WAS I THINKING!!! This box accentuates/enhances the natural sound of my bass so it projects further and has way more sustain, the distortion channel ads a whole new level to some of the heavier songs my band plays and allows me to fill in more for the guitarist while he goes off on a solo. I love the ability to go straight into the board with a custom sound and the option at smaller gigs to not need to bring as much gear. Great pedal, I hope it stands the test of time.

Really - the ONLY pedal you need!

By Don't Bb

from Snowflake, AZ

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I was tossing up the SansAmp and this to buy - and although the price difference is obvious and since I didn't really need a pre-amp, the MXR does dirt to the SansAmp. The ability to sweeten and warm your sounds and make your bass sound many time larger than it is are reason enough, but this stomp does so much more. In reality it is 3 stomps in one. You have the EQ area that can pump life into your bass and you do this before the sound gets to your preamp in your head. You can pick and blend from an infinite tone pallet. Then you have the DISTORTION channel where you can add just a smidge all the way to serious fry-your-brain clipping and overdrive. These two channels can be coupled and then you have the third option. You can turn them both off and just enjoy the clean sound which is really a fourth option - or not - but if you get lost and can't find a sound that just works, you can push another button and get to a pre-set EQ that is clean and gets you out of a sticky situation. It's all very easy - but it looks complicate. It ain't. Add in the DI-Out and the Parallel-Out, where I add my tuner to keep it out of the sound train, and you've got some serious pedal here. With Phantom Power and the ability to use this pedal on just about any instrument (even my harmonicas) will make the MXR Bass DI+ the keeper you will never let go. I've also looked inside just 'to see' - it's tough and sturdy and the pots are all very high quality. The knobs COULD be cheap plastic - but they aren't. They are a very resilient and a semi-rigid material that defies damage. Oh - BTW: Keep 'Monster Cables' out of this thing since their cable ends are too big, (but they know that and don't seem to care).

The Only Stomp You Need

By J. Vreeland

from Anza, CA

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I never wanted to mess with my bass voices and I figured adding anything to the sound would mess it up badly. Wrong! If you ever only buy ONE STOMP - this is the ONE!!! This has been in my setup for a little over a year and I would miss it terribly if it 'disappeared'. I have access to three sets of settings with it::: Clean, Boosted & Distortion, and if I totally foul up (it happens) I can hit the COLOR button and get a pre-defined set of EQs that will pull you outta the fire - fast! Lots of options and the 3-channel EQ section can really get billows of tone and sounds out of a passive bass to equal a full-on active pre-bass with NO/SOME/MUCHO colorization as you see fit.I use the DI occasionally for my tubed preamp and it's clean without any noise at all. One thing: SOME stomps after the MXR will protest a little since the output from the MXR is pretty hot - so make sure it runs at the end of the train and plug into your padded -15dB input if you have one on your amp. The AUX OUT is great for a tuner too! That keeps the tuner out of the signal path. The box feels heavy and really strong. The battery box is just OK - but I run it powered from a 1 Spot anyway. .

I went ampless.

By BassPlayin'Trucker

from Hampton, GA

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I guess "ampless" isn't a word, but I don't need to take my amp to church with me anymore. I use this box to send my signal straight to the mixing board. They have more control of me in the house mix & I have a monitor to hear myself. I like that I don't have to take my amp if I don't want to. I have a bass with a low output signal. I can use this box in between my bass and the amp to boost the signal. I did buy a power supply for this box, but you don't need it if the mixing board has phantom power. I got rid of all my other pedals (except my Boss tuner pedal) to get this box. I had considered the SansAmp, Eden, & Seymour Duncan direct boxes. I took a chance on this one and I am happy with my choice. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it seems to take away a little of the sustain of the lower notes on the B string. That's not a huge deal to me & wouldn't stop me from recommending this box. Great value for the money!

Great DI with effects for live applications

By Brian

from The Colony, Texas

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I bought my MXR M-80 8 months ago to replace the stage DI at our church. It not only performs great as a DI interface, but it's helped me get the sound I'm looking for. I especially like the seperate distortion channel that I can use when it's time to play a song that needs more edge. I currently use it with an older MXR DynaComp and the combination works great for my setup. I'd recommend it for any live applications.

Impressive!

By DAVID LAKIN

from Knoxville, TN

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I bought the MXR M-80 a few months ago, I'm very impressed. I have used it on several shows it's never let me down. Recently I had it in the studio, the recording engineer was blown away. Completely noise free, he was amazed. He's been in the recording business for 30 years, he said "that's one of the best D.I.'s I've ever heard". It's built like a tank, always dependable and one of the most versatile piece of equipment I've ever used.

Awesome D.I.

By DAVID LAKIN

from Knoxville, TN

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I've been completely blown away by the M-80 Bass D.I. From the versatility of the tone options to the way it's powered (AC, 9V battery or phantom power) it's amazing. My bass comes alive when I switch it on! I wasn't sure about how much I would use the distortion, but I'm finding ways to incorperate it into my sound. Using the distortion and my MXR Phase 100 together is mind blowing! I've had the M-80 for several months now, it's never let me down. On stage or in the studio it's completely noise free.I would highly recommend this product, it's a must have for any bass player's gig bag!

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

This thing is awesome, however it does not work well when plugged straight into a processor, which is how I need to run it with my current rig. Plugged directly into an amp it sounds great. It really fattens up your sound. I returned mine sadly, due to the above statement. If I someday have a different set up with an amp I will definitely get one of these. I was using it with an 8 string guitar to get more out of the low strings. The distortion, not why I tried it, is pretty good. Paired with a dirty channel on an amp it would very usable distortion.

Comments about MXR M-80 Bass Direct Box with Distortion:

I've been playing for over 30 years. Always wanted to have the old ampeg tube amp but don't have $4,000 to drop for one. And I've never really been a "pedal guy". But after doing some research, I decided to go with the MXR m-80. WOW, where have I been. My fender amp now has the sound I want for a little over $100. You can't go wrong with this pedal no matter what sound your looking for. If it quit working tomorrow, l would buy another one in a heartbeat. Buy it! Do some research and maybe you will agree. Go ahead and get a 9-volt power supply and save money from buying batteries.

This is a great DI box for those not wanting a metal sound. It is compact and very well laid out. The distortion is subtle and has a warm sound. The noise gate takes out almost all the static and hum out of the distortion when you aren't playing at the moment.

I have this and I also have the Sans Amp and running them both together with quite a few other effect pedals and then through a 121 Mark Bass amp and having both of these preamps going at the same time is amazing the sound is so clear and full and the MXR pedal gives you a little more tonal quality with having a Mid. knob where the Sans Amp only has a high and a low, I like messing around with the different variations this has but the quality is so smooth and clear and the little bit of boost you get sounds really good as well! And the fact that it has a separate circuit with distortion makes it even more fun!
