This is by far the best Distortion pedal there is to date. MXR stands for quality and again did not let me down! The sound has a very broad range from clean distortion to high output overdrive. Compared to the Double Shot Distortion it does not deliver that edgy metal overtone and provides you with a crunchy rock sound. No metal, just pure rock music. The addition of the "tone"- knob gives the user so many more options and is really worth the $10 more than the Distortion+. The solid metal construction will never fail and compared to the SD-1 there is no permanent hum in the background. Best distortion out there!!!!

When I played this pedal with my small marshall mini stack, no matter what amount of distortion I put on the pedal, it always had a lot of background feedback and crunch you don't want to hear. I don't recommend this pedal to anyone because nobody likes this kind of feedback. Hear it for yourself.

Great Pedal!

By alex jones

from Kalispell Montana

This pedal is amazing for an amazing price as well. It works really well for giving your already distorted amp a nice boost. It's more of an "overdrive" pedal instead of a distortion, so you shredders out there will have a hard time getting a massive distorted tone out of this pedal, but overall it's great. You can get anything from a Stevie Ray Vaughan driven boost or put it in front of your already distorted amp and get a singing lead tone. It works well for Eric Johnson kind of stuff (turn the tone knob all the way down and the distortion around 8 o'clock) and everything in between. The build of this pedal is great and will last me a lifetime. I do not gig with a back up, I have 100% faith in this thing. If it was stolen I would definitely buy another one. It is easily worth twice the amount they are asking for, so go ahead and buy it already!

Distortion III

By Ed

from Rochester, NY

First things first, this pedal has a very harmonic drive, and absolutely no compression to speak of. The drive sounds very much like a driven tube amp. The big flaw is that it is not at all transparent. It completely colors your tone no matter how much gain you set it to, in particular it has a very mid boosted sound and has very little low end. The tone knob boosts or completely cuts the mids and highs, so it is not particularly useful. I personally recommend boosting the treble frequencies by either using the bridge pickup, or some separate EQ (ie. pedal or amp EQ), to increase the attack. If you do boost the treble's you can get a very, very accurate reproduction of a cranked British amp sound, especially if you uses a boost pedal in front of it. I realize this sounds like a lot to get a good sound, but that sound is very good, and versatility doesn't make or break a pedal's quality. All in all, this is a fine pedal for what it does, and if you want to get a strong Brit crunch sound, this is a darn good deal.

5 Stars Don't Do It Justice

By Scotty

Ok LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.....here's my rig. After years of playin Peavey 5150's and 6505's, I hung em up after Eddie left for greener pastures. I then bought my Bogner Alchemist from GC and LOVED it, but I wanted to have that 5150esq distortion as an option to the luscious "BROWN" sound of the lead channel on the Bogner. I just traded in my Boss DS-1 and I have NEVER looked back!! The real test was this. I played this pedal at GC in front of the Bogner on clean and compared it to the lead channel and "BOO YAH". GET IT, you will NOT be dissapointed. I also use a Maxon Tube Screamer as a light overdrive/boost and the two together sound AWESOME. Don't forget the MXR Phase 90 to go with it!!! You'll be soundin like the "Ice Cream Man" in no time.

mid range strong

By anonymous

from fresno, CA

As a blues and funk musician i needed something that an overdrive pedal could not do but i did not want fuzz or metal. i tried out many different pedals and this took the cake. not exactly the sound i want but i tried to many and stayed with this one being the best. the construction is great and you can really hear the analog difference. it has mid range sparckle for your strat's middle pickup or bridge perfect for the glassy sound since i play through a 68 bassman, but other than that not much more useful. great pedal but not versitile.

Knarly!

By Matt

from Crystal Lake IL

I have had it for a little over a year. This pedal is not one of thoes regrets in my book. Every toy/pedal/paintbrush has a purpose. It can be used many different ways so you can use it all around differnt styles and tones. It responds pretty well to your volume knob. . It is a more raw sounding distortion which for me puts it right between the catagory of a fuzz and a overdrive especially when you crank the distortion knob. I use it as a booster most of the time for my amps dirty channel. This REALLY sounds good through tube amps (what doesnt) lol. It definatly shows the guitars charecter when you play diff guitars. i play a tele with a humbucker (with coil tap) in neck and that is deff different from the way my gretch sounds. I recomend this pedal all the way. it is good for boosting dirty and also it is good for just scratching up you clean tones.

Finally!

By napper29

from Atlanta, GA

I've been looking for a pedal like this for so long. It really lets the characteristics of your guitar and amp show through unlike my DS-1 that sounds too processed. I play through a Vox AC30 6TB and it sounds so sweet! Nice sustain for leads and an excellent driving rhythm sound too. I use it as my primary distortion when playing at low volume. Then I use it as an overdrive when playing live. It goes from smooth overdrive for blues to a really nice crunchy distortion for hard rock (I use it for punk), probably not great for metal. Very versatile though. I can't say enough good things about this pedal, but I have to stop. Just get one!

Strong, powerful, rich sounding baby.

By Archidamos

from Warsaw, Poland

I use it with Ibanes TS9 and I can get any overdrive sound I wish. From light bluessy to almost metal sound but much more selective. Comparing to Tube Screamer this MXR Distorion has more natural and less compressed sound so it looks more dynamic. I like both of them and I think it's a must in every bluesman rig.

Exellent For Many Different Types of Rock

By Aninomis

Perfect for stuff like Black Sabbath such as iron man. This distortion delivers a blow down the wall kind of sound. Great for people who are just beginners to experts and all in between.

Versatility

By nzeese

from Indy, IN

This pedal is about as useful as a distorion pedal can be. The Distortion III gives users a "clean" type of distortion. This pedal can give one's tone enough grit to play hard rock when the settings are maxed, or can give the smooth feeling of blues crunch when the tone knob is decreased. Even when the Distortion setting is turned all the way down, this pedal gives a desirable amount of gain to light up any tone. Use with a compressor set before it to give this tone a wet hard metal tone.
