Overview

The MXR Custom Comp effect pedal is built from the finest components available and designed with a blend of modern and classic compressor technology. At the heart of the compressor pedal resides the legendary and rare CA3080 "metal can" IC that delivers increased dynamic range, greater transparency, and quieter operation. In addition, the MXR Custom Shop design team included RF suppression components into the compressor pedal for interference-free operation, and an internal attack control that allows fine-tuning of the speed of the note's initial attack. Combined with a TPDT (Triple Pole Double Throw) switch for true bypass and heavy-duty pots, the MXR Custom Comp CSP202 compressor pedal will provide years of high performance live and in the studio.

The MXR compressor pedal can be powered by one 9V battery (sold separately).

Sounds awesome! Compared it to the Keeley 2 and 4 knob and went with the MXR. Something I didn't know, and other reviews didn't mention was the two knobs hidden inside the unit. Attack and Trim knobs are located under the back plate, basically making this a 4 knob compressor. The Keeley 4 knob made my SG sound like a tele, and the MXR brightens things up just right, with the option to brighten just as much as the Keeley. The price is right and the sound is great.

First, because I tend to rely heavily on my fellow axe-slingers' opinions of products they own, I feel I need to write this review of the MXR CSP202 Custom Comp, a pedal that I did not keep. This pedal's compression sounds good and it does have the internal pots giving more range to your sound. The problem for me was that at the settings/tone I wanted (the main knobs: output 11 o'clock, sensitivity anywhere between 9 and 3 o'clock and the internals at noon) this pedal added hiss to my pedal chain (and I had gotten it hoping to replace a compressor I'm using in the middle of my chain and thereby clean up my pre-existing noise). I own other dunlop pedals and they are great, and I expected this one to be a great addition. I simply couldn't add a hiss-generator to my chain though, minor though it may have been, and had to return it. Out of fairness, I must say that other than my multi-effects processor (POD XTL) I have never owned a compressor pedal before this one, and I also intened to use it "always-on". When playing normally the hiss was unnoticeable, but using a clean sound and playing lightly, I could hear it mixed in with my signal, which I found unacceptible. Also it is important to note that I'm using 4 other pedals in addition to my XTL, and all have some level of noise, which were only exacerbated by this addition. I still give it 3 stars - I liked what I heard when I couldn't hear the hiss.

Nice Update

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I am a fan of the Dyna-Comp. I bought this hoping it would give me a better S/N ratio and more gain control. If you are a user of the Dyna-comp you know that you have to crank the output to get unity gain even before adding anything more than minimal compression. This gives you the classic Dyna-Comp sound and beyond. The internal trim pots give you the ability to give it more beef or more spank depending on taste. It has a better S/N ratio and with the output around noon you have unity gain, so this is worth the price of upgrading. Great for country pickin'.

Cool pedal

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a cool pedal. Makes my SG standard sound a lot like a strat when all knobs on the pedal are at middle (including the two secret knobs). Worth it if you find your humbuckers are too bold, muddy, boomy etc. Cons: I don't like where the power output is placed, kinda gets in the way but not really. It has its own specific sound and either you like it or you don't, if you don't there's not too much you can do

Nice Compressor

By Seth Connors

from PA

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've had this for well over a year and have been using it quite a bit on my board. I use a compressor for a solo boost. And for those who have experienced a hiss, or unwanted noise: ANY compressor pedal will do that when using an overdriven or distorted amp. You CANNOT leave it on all the time using it in that type of application. When playing clean: you CAN leave this pedal on all the time. The internal trim pots are nice in order to further calculate your desired tone. Kind of a pain to unscrew the back to set them, but worth it in the long run as they cannot be bumped afterward. I have had several compressors, this one is a keeper. 9v standard power as well. This sounds dead on exactly the same as a Jangle Box..for much less $$.

Great deal...

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

FOr less than $200 you get a fairly transparent comp capable of giving you those chimey cleans with equal string balance. Toss it in the front end of an overdrive and it's a great boost for leads. For the price, it can't be beaten. This one is a gem yet to be discovered.

Clean only!

By Dylan Buchanan

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought one of these at my local Guitar Center two days ago and it works great, on the clean channel. When you hit distortion you do get added sustain, but it creates a bunch of noise when you're not playing and you get too much feedback even at low volumes. And if you gig alot it is not a good choice. The knobs are too big and too close to the foot switch so when you hit the foot switch you are likely to hit one of the knobs as well. Not my best choice. I will be returing this pedal for a sound and gig-worthy Route 66 pedal ASAP.

Wow!

By cloudyeyetavern

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

The reviews aren't wrong about this basically being a Keeley for half the price! It's an amazing sounding compressor. It can be set for a very subtle or very extreme effect. Durable, yet light and compact, easy to clear a space for it on the pedalboard. Wish I would have picked this one up a long time ago!

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Compression can be such a subtle effect. This pedal maximizes your tone and sustain without becoming strident. Be mindful where you place this in your signal chain, experiment if need be. ANY compressor can be noisy if placed in the wrong order. This unit is very quiet. I bought several other MXR pedals in the past, Chorus, Carbon Copy Delay, and the Distortion III. I am very satisfied with each unique pedal and feel they are the best overall value. This compressor is no exception.

This is the one

By Stephen

from O'Fallon, MO

Comments about MXR Custom Shop CSP202 Custom Comp Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play bass and always use a compressor for live shows. It helps me to cut through without having to EQ so as to compete with the guitar(s). I've tried a lot of compressors over the years, both rack mount and pedals, but had yet to find one that was "complete", until now. This pedal is smooth, quiet and easy to use. Once the attack and frequency response is set using the internal trim pots (which actually do what they're suppose to), it's very easy to dial in just the right amount of compression using the 2 external sensitivity (ratio) and output (gain) knobs. And, the icing on the cake is the RF suppression circuitry...no more local radio stations coming through my amp, which was a big problem with every other pedal compressor I had tried. This is the one I've been searching for!
