Like it more than the ZW Phase 90 and regular Block Logo. Not crazy better , but to me maybe about 30 percent better. Very comparable to the 1970s phase 100 I have also. I know one is a 4 stage and one is a six stage phaser , but tonewise , definitely similar. This one has a more pronounced and tastefully appropropriate flavour. Sound does not drop out of existence in the middle of the sweep and its depth keeps me out of seasick territory. Battery snap and leaving one screw out solved the barrel inlet power supply issue and the LoopMaster controls the on or off light indication (not entirely necessary). I like the Less Is More design approach. Pedal Month at guitar Center knocked it down to around $100 so the little extra was not enough to be concerned about. Money not important , only TONE important. I will be enjoying this long after the money is forgotten. Besides , the M--g 6 and 12 stage phaser is probably triple the price. Which is the only other phaser I would even think of considering. No tone sucking to my ears when not engaged , even though it is not true hardwire bypassed. This style MXR box would Never have me questioning reliability and I believe this to be the reason why MXR has built their company to where it is today.
If you are complaining about the lack of LED and DC power input, look on Musician's Friend. I don't know why Guitar Center doesn't have it, but MXR released a version of this pedal with both of those, and for $20 less. So before buying this, look around for that other version. I have it, and love it.
I love this pedal. It's a great pedal, the best Phaser I've ever heard. I'm very picky about sound, and I own a few Keeley mods and have 13 pedals. This pedal is a highlight. It nails Pink Floyd and Van Halen exactly. Sweet, detailed. About the indicator light, if you can't tell that this pedal is on, then you might be tone deaf. It's pretty obvious. I do wish that they would put an indicator light on it and a dc out on the side.
The Phase 90 is an incredible pedal. In my band I use it in a few songs and it really adds depth and a bit of complexity. Everything about this pedal is just the way it should be, except since it is an exact replica of the original, you run into some problems. 1. NO LED This vintage Phase 90 does not have an LED light that tells you if it's on or off. Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's on or off, and that can be a pain during shows. 2. NO POWER ADAPTER If you have this in a pedal board, this is a nightmare. It will die after a while an if it's dead, then your signal won't get through the board. 3. COMBINATION OF THE TWO PROBLEMS You don't know if it's on because there's no LED. Since it's battery powered, you could click the switch without knowing it and turn it on. It will stay on until it dies. Then you put it in your board thinking it still works. You go to play your guitar but it doesn't make any sound because your Phase 90 is dead and it is stopping your sound from getting through. You can't attach it to your board and get power from it, because there's no power input. Now you have to go change the batteries for the 56th time in two weeks. 4. PRICE It costs a good amount more than the other Phase 90 that sounds exactly the same and has both the LED and the power input. In conclusion, get the MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal instead.
This phaser is fantastic, tonally it is the most transparent and musical I have ever played. I feel that detracting points for an LED and 9v plug is unnecessary because I understood and appreciated what the MXR custom shop was trying to achieve. The tones vary from old school van halen to a great leslie vibe and everywhere in between. simple and effective!
It is just like the original. This is the best phaser I've ever tried, It has the sweetest tone; warm and classic phasing sound, sound just like the '70s and even alot like a uni-vibe ton,and it doens't add any color to your tone. It's built like a tank. Only a "Speed" knob, just like the original. but: it only works with a 9V battery, did not like that there's no LED to show you that the effect is on.This is not a problem. I added a 9V jack to my pedal and it works just fine. I wouldn't go to a gig without a 9V jack installed, but in your room would be ok. So because of no 9V jack and no On LED I give it 4.5 stars.(STILL A GREAT PEDAL)I recommend this pedal.
I like the warm sound of this pedal and the retro look of the original color.Nice sounding effect with single coils on clean channel and really gets alive with a distortion.
Pro: it's just like the original. Con: It's JUST like the original. This is the best phaser I've ever tried, and I like it more and more everyday. It has the sweetest tone; warm and classic phasing sound, a reminder of what we've heard on those '70s vinyl LPs. Even though is not TBP, it doens't add any color to your tone. It's built like a tank, it'll last a long time. Only a "Speed" knob, just like the original. There's a but: it only works with a 9V battery (I assume that in 1974 there was no 9V power supply) and there's no LED to show you that the effect is on. The latter is not a problem, the former is. My pedal tech added a 9V jack and it works just fine. But I wouldn't go to a gig using batteries on any of my pedals, no way. Keep that in mind. That's why I don't give it 5 stars.
