Overview

MXR rolls out the CL1 classic overdrive pedal, delivering massive driving tone for a price that anyone can afford. Housed in an indestructible die-cast housing, and using quality materials, the MXR CL1 classic overdrive effect pedal is sure to become an instant favorite, that can stand up to the toughest gigging elements.

The CL1's Tone control makes sound shaping simple. Use the MXR pedal's control to shape your sound to your liking. The output and gain controls provide ultimate control for any tone at any volume. The MXR effect pedal adds sustain and gain without coloring your guitar or amp's tone. The footswitch toggles effect on or in bypass mode (red LED indicates on).

The MXR CL1 classic overdrive pedal can be powered by one 9V battery (accessed by removing the bottom plate of the guitar pedal), a Dunlop ECB003 AC adapter or a Dunlop DCB10 DC Brick power supply.

This pedal (actually designated M66 by MXR/Dunlop, not CL1) easily compares to an Ibanez TS-9, Maxon OD-9, and BBE Green Screamer. For the price, the MXR beats the others. For starters, this pedal doesn't lose the bass end like the TS/0D-9 does. In addition, it has more gain. Maybe not a lot more, but it was noticeable. Price diff: MXR is 1/3 price of TS-9. The BBE pedal, when you engage it, makes an audible click through the amp chain. The MXR does not. The BBE also has less gain on 10 than the TS-9 does on 9. Price diff: MXR is 1/2 the BBE. MXR M66 = best 30 bucks you can spend on a TS-9 type pedal.

Really wanted this pedal to work. I have several MXR pedals and love them all. However, not this one. As always, you get what you pay for. Internet reviews claims it's a promotional pedal made just for GC. Some claim it's the MXR GT-OD in a different box. I purchased it in hopes that was true. Very disappointed. Makes my guitar (strat) sound muddy. Sounds as if my amp is an AM radio when compared to a boss BD-2 and MXR '78 distortion. If you need a first OD pedal to play and practice in your room and don't have the money then I guess this will work fine. If you need a great OD-Distortion then get the MXR '78 Distortion.

OMG!!!!!!!Shocked

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I went into Guitar Center and tried out the TS-9, OD-3 and four other brands. When the rep. said try this pedal (m-66 MXR Classic Overdrive)It sounded exactly the same as all the expensive pedals only with a creamier sound added to It's large amount of different tones. The good news was it must of been on sale. I have two solid state amps and this pedal makes them sound like a high dollar tube amp. Try this pedal before you lay down a 100.00+, I highly recommend this pedal to all musicians PERIOD.

Mxr kinda guy

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

We go thru stages, lots of effects none at all or just a few. Back in the day It was a phase 45, distortion plus and a 10 band eq. I have a few teak pedals but connect with the MXR stuff. Handmade or mass produced its all art! GC has a big tall case of pedals, Willie give me a boost(I'm short) so I can see the top row. It's a real deal and it's MXR.

Great pedal

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Just bought one today after trying one through a Squier Strat and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (sounded great thru that setup). Took it home, tried it through my Fender 70's RI Strat and Fender Blues Deville (sounded even better through that setup). Enough said; saw it near an original Ibanez TS808 TubeScreamer (which was about 10x as much) and it sounded just as good, if not better.

Best OD For The Money

By odenthusiast

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I just picked up the white anniversary version of the MXR Classic Overdrive at my local guitar center. Let me just start by saying I have owned a variety popular/boutique/expensive od pedals. I am blown away by the mxr classic. The gain truly sounds like it goes from 0 to 10 for real, not 3 to 8, like some other od pedals. The bass is tightened but not cut, the clean channel boost is warm and bluesy...a true cranked amp sound. In front of a gain channel you get very clear distortion enhancement for chugging and soloing, your original tone beautifully intact but tighter and meaner. This is the only od pedal you will ever need and it is also one of the cheapest. What are you waiting for?!

You can not beat it for the price

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I recently found myself in the market for a solid overdrive pedal and boy did I find it. I am mainly a bassist so I don't have a need for many pedals but i decided an overdrive would be good since i can use it for both bass and guitar. I had been considering an OCD by fulltone but being I would be using the peal sparingly I had little desire to spend the 130 or so dollars the OCD cost. And to my surprise GC was selling these again except the new ones are made in a white casing. So I went to my local GC and was able to A,B this and the ocd. The on thing I will say is that the OCD has a more compressed tone that sounds a lot like the overdrive on a Marshall stack and can be driven almost to a moderate distortion tone. The MXR is a little more organic and gritty sounding(Blues like) but can also be smoothed out as well. In the store I decided the tone of the OCD was somewhat more pleasing to my ear but considering the mild to moderate use this pedal was going to get I decided to opt for the MXR. Anyway I got it home and pluged in to my set up and it sounds very nice and without the ocd to compare it to I don't miss it. My recommendation is if your a pro gigging on a constant basis than go for something more like the full tone but if your looking for a simple overdrive for light use this is your pedal.

well worth the money

By Tommy Thunderfoot

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was looking for a new sound when I came across an MXR Classic overdirve online ,quite possibly saved my amp from the chopping block-better than a blues driver, vintage Maxon od9,Marshall guv',or 808-(none of which are priced as low, even used)the only thing better is full volume, but a 60 watt fender tube amp at full volume can cost you gigs-this is the creamiest overdrive I have heard besides a low wattage tube amp cranked wide open.It has a switch inside you can flip to cut the drive in half, and also cut the low frequency response, but sounds better"fat" .If yer lookin' for a cheap toy to give you that greasy,fat,sustain-y sound without the grit, give it a shot,That said,I have a Maxon od0 and a blues driver for sale if anybody's interested....

Great Value

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I like MXR pedals, but like the others, the price made me question the quality. Mine died after a few months; however, I contacted MXR and they promptly fixed it, and paid for all of the shipping. It has worked perfect since. Great tone and solid.

Great pedal, great price

By Loko Hank

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Wanna save some cash? Skip the TS9 and get the CL1. It's packaged with the same familiar color and controls - volume, tone and gain - but with way more tonal options including expanded low end and actual distortion. Plus, you can still achieve the classic Tube Screamer sound and still have room to spare. Great sounding pedal for less than half the price.

Great for What Its Good For

By Ace Slowman

from Florence, MT

Comments about MXR CL1 Classic Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Immediately you can tell the pedal is well built. Its a very nice looking pedal with a very solid steel housing. The tone itself is very natural and subtle feeling. You can go from a nice and crisp overdrive to a really rough and dirty sound (but dont mistake that for heavy distortion, it doesnt have the same punch and sustain) The pedal is great for playing blues rock, and it has its place in pretty much any genre when used right, but dont buy this expecting to get the entire spectrum of distortion. Its an overdrive pedal,
