  I purchased this pedal as a backup to a high dollar pedal I own. I did not want to take the expensive pedal on vacation with me and have it get stolen. What I found was that the '78 is a great buy! It is simple to use and has a nice gain boost feature. More importantly it sounds great with my other pedals and I now use it all the time. So, what do I now do with my high dollar pedal? Nothing, I traded it because I don't need it anymore now that I have my new '78 pedal. FYI, I never usually write reviews but found this pedal was worth taking the time to write this for you.   This pedal is fantastic! With a lower gain setting, with a strat, it has that perfect SRV style tone. The gain around half with the tone up a little (to let in some mids), it has that perfect "Rock You Like A Hurricane" type of tone. With the gain cranked, it has that perfect '80s hard rock full-stack tone we all love! Think Randy Rhoads or EVH with the gain maxed. Highly recommend this pedal to anyone wanting full-stack sound without full-stack weight or price. And with MXR, I know for a fact 30 years from now, I'll still be stomping on it. Built like a tank!

  Best to know that this is NOT an overdrive and NOT a scooped out metal distortion or something heavy and fuzzy like a Big Muff. In the middle area between where overdrive ends (natural amp distortion to light gain) and total annihilation or violin-like sustain begins (Metal Zone or Big Muff) is where this pedal really shines. Expect it to do what a Tubescreamer or Muff or Metal Zone does and you'll be disappointed. It does have just a touch of the MXR graininess to the high end but also has great definition, somewhat like one of the Sparkle Drive pedals where you really get clear individual high end so that you can hear individual strings in full chords. It also brings out the "tube sound" of tube amps, that articulated sparkling high end and thicker low end. It doesn't do this as much on solid state amps. Very good deal for the price, it can compete with the boutiques that cost a lot more. This would be ideal sandwiched between a Tubescreamer/Keely overdrive or the MXR Badass Overdrive and something heavy to cover 3 increasing levels of gain.
