A collaboration between Dunlop and Edward Van Valen.

The MXR EVH Eddie Van Halen Phase 90 captures the warm, hypnotic tone of the "script logo" Phase 90 that figured so prominently on the early Van Halen records. The pedal can also be switched to deliver an edgier phase tone. Features include the striped graphics from Van Halen's guitar, rock-solid internal construction, and an indestructible enclosure.

Still unmatched

I was given an original script logo MXR Phase 90 when I was a kid (already a vintage classic back then). I used it for years 'cause it was so subtle and always seemed to add just the right touch of movement to the sound, the perfect example of it's type effect. Unfortunatley that pedal was lost in truly tragic circumstances; while I've since had my share of phasers to pick from, none has ever sounded so sweet as that original MXR Phase 90, I guess I'll have to break down and pick up one of the new MXR EVH Phase 90's, since it really does seem to get that sweet, subtle sound when you hit the Script button(sound's good with the button up for "modern" Phase 90 sounds too). The EVH Eddie Van Halen Phase 90's also quite a bargain in today's market, I'm suprised MXR doesn't package it as a boutique re-issue, as the sound is truly classic and remains unmatched.

Love it

I have owned a lot of gear over the years and this pedal is fantastic! It does exactly what it was designed to do. Sometimes simplicity is genius and in this case they did not mess with a good thing. All you need is one knob and you get everything that the original Phase 90 gave you, plus the addition of a more modern sound with the press of a button. If you are looking for a thousand buttons and lights, don't buy it. But Van Halen was never about a thousand buttons and lights . . .

The Old and the New

I own an old vintage Phase 90 and the new EVH version. I can't say that the EVH model sounds perfectly like a vintage unit, because it doesn't...not quite. But I wouldn't give up my EVH Phase 90 for anything, because you can get some sounds out of it that you just can't get out of a vintage unit. Ideally, its best to own both a vintage Phase 90 and the EVH version. If all you can afford is just the EVH unit, you certainly won't regret buying it. Its that good. I have to say, though, that if you are looking for that ultra spacey, psychedelic wavelike sound, you might want to look into buying a Small Stone as well, the EVH Phase 90 does have its limits. But, then again, the Small Stone can't do what the EVH model can do. Also, in my opinion, the EVH Phase 90 is slightly more transparent than the Small Stone. If you can only afford one phase shifter, it should probably be the EVH Phase 90.

MXR EVH Phase 90

TThe MXR EVH Phase 90 is two Phase Shifters in one! The Script switch enables you to toggle between the classic, subtle vintage Phase 90 sound or a more intense contemporary phasing. With the script switch engaged and the speed dial set to 9 O?clock or lower, you get a very subtle phase setting effect that really fattens up your sound without a pronounced whooshing effect. It really nails Van Halen?s Eruption sound, as well as the solo to ?You Really Got Me?. Disengage the script switch and you get a more pronounced contemporary effect. With the speed knob set at 3 O?clock or higher, you get a shimmery pseudo rotary speaker effect?great for recreating the Leslie effect Jimmy Pages used on the solo to ?Good Times Bad Times?. Overall this unit performs wonderfully, offering versatile phase shifting effects with low noise operation. I feel that it is the best Phase Shifter currently on the market!

Great Pedal, Good Price

In previous reviews, people have mistaken this pedal as a phase shifter. It is a phaser, not a phase shifter. Not only can you get the Eddie Van Halen sound out of this pedal, but the sound of a regular phase 90 as well. It is a great addition to any rig.
