Overview

Go ahead... get loud. Designed as a studio go-to mic for daily recording, the MXL R80 is built to last inside and outside. MXL has built modern ribbon elements into the R80 microphone. It has a high SPL capacity, making it suitable for guitar cabinets and horns. The figure 8 polar pattern lets sound roll in from both sides of the mic to create a full sound. The MXL R80 excels on the stage and in the studio. A figure-8 pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back sides of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amount of rejection 90 off access. The front of the microphone is indicated by the MXL logo where the audio signal is in-phase while the back side has an inverted phase.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

This is a solid Mike and a welcome addition to my collection.
I tested it on classical guitar and vocals, connected to a focusrite interface and also a Allen & Heath Q 16 mixer with excellent results.(Very clean and warm) So if I only use it for those two elements its still a great buy. To get the best performance from this mike, you have to experiment with it and find out where it works best for you. Once that is established, you will realize that you have a great ribbon mike for under one dollars.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

BIG, WARM and fairly deep. Okay, I got two of these on sale and so we are using these mics for a second mic on a classical guitar, overhead and room mic for drums and on our tone wheel and Wurly 4100. These mics hit that deeper warm tone. I like matching them with say a 57 to get a nice spectrum. I love them and on sale they are magic. I might pick up two more when they go back on sale but even at retail they rock.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

Love the sound quality that comes out of this mic. It's sound is clear and true, and picks up loud volumes without distortion. The output is a bit lower than other mics I have, but not so much as to be a problem.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

GC was blowing these out for half price a couple weeks ago and I couldn't resist. I have an MXL R40 ribbon that I've been enjoying quite a bit and wanted to see if the R80 was an upgrade. If it is, it's a minor one. The R40 came with a shock mount, this R80 only comes with a plastic clip that screws to the bottom of the mic and let's every knock and bump get into your recording. I'll need to get an after market shock mount. If you're going to record vocals or some other soft to moderate source, you'll need a pre-amp with plenty of gain to push these low output ribbon mics. My M-Audio MobilePre USB doesn't have that kind of headroom, so I bought a Triton Fethead and just used this mic today to do some vocal takes and voiceover work. That extra 20db of gain from the Fethead is a perfect addition to this mic; really opened up its dynamic range. Other than the voice work, I've used this mic outside a kick drum, about 6 inches from the resonant head. Definitely an application where this mic shines. Plenty of rich low end information in the 20-40Hz range to support the internal kick drum mic. Happy to have this mic in my collection.
