Overview

The MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern is a condenser microphone designed around a Class-A discrete FET mic amp specially chosen to match its large diaphragm capsule. The capsule itself has been sized and tuned to provide a silky and airy top end with a full, warm midrange reminiscent of vintage microphones. Hand selected internal components create a sound that enhances both vocal and instrument performances.

Using the polar patterns
To take advantage of the versatility of the MXL 4000's polar patterns, here are some miking tricks of the pros.

Figure-8
Figure-8 mics pick up sound equally well from front and rear. So, if you're looking for a rich vocal sound with the added ambience of room tone to add depth and spaciousness, use the figure-8 pattern and have your vocalist sing into one side while the other picks up the reflections of the room. Only do this if you have a good-sounding room. You can also use the figure-8 pattern for isolation from other instruments. For example, if you're miking drums and want to give the hi-hat its own track, position the MXL 4000 so that the side of the figure-8, where rejection is greatest, is pointing towards the snare while the front or rear of the mix faces the hat. Do the same if you're recording a singer-guitarist who's playing an acoustic while singing. You need two figure-8 mics for this one. Position the vocal mic so that the side is facing the guitar, and the guitar mic so that the side of the figure-8 points towards the singer's mouth. Now both singer and guitar are isolated. Again, make sure you do this in a room that sounds good, because the back side of the mic will be picking up the room.

Omni
In many cases, the least used, but best-sounding of all the polar patterns. Omni has very little off-axis coloration, which means that sounds entering the sides of the mic sound just as good as sounds entering the front. If you have a great-sounding room, by all means, try omni before anything else. Omni gives your recordings the impression of being in the room with the sound. It also works very well as the "mid" mic in Mid-Side stereo recording.

Cardioid
This is the most used pattern. It's basically point and shoot, but keep in mind that you can use its rear-rejection to your advantage, or by turning the mic slightly away from the source, you can use it's off-axis response to tame sharp transients. Aside from straight-ahead recording, most people us the cardioid pattern is the "mid" mic in Mid-Side stereo recording.

Requires phantom power.

Amazing value at a great price!

By Cesar Lima

from Framingham, MA

Comments about MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone:

Just bought this microphone to replace my old MXL 990 and I really like the features it comes with because it reminds me of the Neumann U87 which is a very expensive microphone with similar features. Well I recorded my first two tracks with my new MXL 4000 and I was absolutely amazed with its quality. Really wanted a much brighter and clearer higher end while keeping a nice tight low end and that is exactly what I got out of this microphone. My voice sounds so great through it, that I didn't have to tweak the EQ much at all unlike my previous MXL 990. For its price, the MXL 4000 gives you more than what you paid for. It was absolutely worth it and I am very happy with this product. The only thing I don't like is that you have to screw in the microphone to the shock mount which takes some time to set up and remove; not fun when you are doing quick sessions or time is short. But hey, that is the only negative thing I have to say, the rest is perfect, the sound quality is amazing, and when it comes to creating music, that's what matters.

Great value for a good mic

By Chris

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone:

This mic is nice, especially for the price. I managed to buy one with a free MXL 603s. This is my go-to vocal mic when I am recording myself singing and playing acoustic guitar and I have been very satisfied with the results. The sound is nice and crisp and does not distort my vocals or the guitar. The guitar sounds especially good when recording in stereo with my 603s and the 4000. I've also used the mic in the omni setting to record the environment while playing guitar which has produced some nice results as well. Overall, this is a great mic on its own, but is even better when used with another in stereo

Stop Hesitating and Buy This Mic!

By Alcarr

from Forrest City, AR

Comments about MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone:

I recently recorded a vocal overdub session for a gospel artist. I gave them a listening cd of the session and before they got home they called me at 2 am to ask, "where in the world did I get that mic." The vocals were clean and crisp with just a touch of air. (The cd I mixed had no eq or compression whatsoever.) All in all, a great sounding mic for specific applications. It is a little bright, but that's what I wanted and expected. It's not my go to mic for everything but with all the features you can't go wrong. Stop hesitating and buy this mic.

Not all That!

By Cliff

from Nashville TN

Comments about MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone:

Bought this mic looking for a good multi-pattern mic. the mic looks great! but the sound is a little harsh especially on the top end. And it distorts considerably when faced with high SPL vocals or if you're recoding Rhythm Acoustic guitar. The Figure of Eight position gave the best sound on Vocals, but it just wasn't smooth enough for my taste. I sent it back and am still looking for my next Mic.

Great product

By Kerwin E.

from St. Louis

Comments about MXL 4000 Multi-Pattern FET Studio Condenser Microphone:

This is a really good product. Im usually not a big MXL fan but i did my research on the product and saw it was wired by Mogami. The finish on it is nice. Its close to the Sterling Audio ST77, with it airy sound, the capsule provides a silky and airy top end with a full, warm mid-range reminiscent of vintage mic. I would say that its a good product at a good price.
