  • Great Mic (for the money)

As reviewed by Rick Miller on 4/22/2011

I have been using an Oktava mic that I bought 10 years ago and it never cut the mustard. Because I just used it for demos I never wanted to spend the money on the mic I wanted. Now I have in the last year or so started buying equipment Mac, pro tools, midi controller etc.. I decide I am going to buy a mic, on a budget of $800.00. I went in to Guitar Center and started working with a sales man. I explained what I was looking for and he grabbed several mics some tube, some condensers even a vacuum tube mic. we set up in-front of an m-box mini and without any pre amps or effects we recorded some vocals. (Using the same phrasing and inflection on each mic). Once we finished recording all the mics we went back to listen. Oh my goodness! thats what every one was saying. This mic out preformed mics 2.5 times more expensive and not by a little bit by the truck load. It has a very rich tone and the warmth that you are looking for in a tube mic. This sales man went as far as getting all the other sales man to show them the difference. I have never written a review but this mic at this price deserves a Rave Review! go out and try it like i did you will be surprised.

  • Great Sound For the $

As reviewed by Jake on 12/19/2007

Well, I have been using this mic for about a year now. I haven't had a single problem with it. It's not the best tube condenser I've heard but for the price it is the best in it's range. I do wish that MXL offered a better shock mount(it's pretty much have to tighten the mounting screws before every time you use it). The mic itself is made well enough and the sound is nice a's a good idea to let the tube warm up for about 15 minutes before using it. You will get the best sound that way. The sound of this mic is good on pretty much all vocal types including female vocals. It is relatively flat sounding...almost like a ribbon mic...which is nice especially if you like to buss your vocals all to one group with EQ on them. I also prefer it over more expensive mics for acoustic guitars in and XY pattern with a solid state class A or transformer less mice. It just has that thing. I prefer to push it through a Chameleon Labs 7206 or a Great River MP1-NV. Basically if you are going to buy MXL this is the one to buy.

  • this mic sucks.

As reviewed by Anonymous on 12/21/2010

Well i bought this from guitar center, after the manager told me this is probably the best mic for me to start off with. well, i've been recording for the past couple of month working on my album and one thing i have noticed alot is that this mic statics up ALOT which is really annoying, and i looked online and alot of reviews online (not on here) say the same thing, everyone or mostly everyone who has this mic has a static issue, i would not recommend this mic to anyone.
