The Reality Of MXL 990

For the amatures when you pull this thing out of the box you will be gitty it has a good balanced sound it's pretty clean. But the quality matches the price. I have had this thing for about a year and a half. First the the shockmount hardware broke twice cheep metal, I had to pull the guts out twice to resoder weak connections that came loose and now finally It just stopped working all together. It deffinetly got put to the test and I guess for the price It paid for itself but dont expect long term out of it.

Sir. 5

I have owned this mic now for about 3 years. Bought it for a portable studio and proved to be quite worth it. I even drop it a couple months back on the leg of my studio chair and dented the screen...still works fine! I am starting to get a lot more advanced in my skills and am starting to see that even though it made good music for me and friens to listen to, its not the best for pro recording. Price really has nothing to do with the mic since you can find a nice mic without skipping a car payment, but beware that this is really only a temp solution to get you into the door. Down the road if you are still recording, you'll need to upgrade to a more receptive high end mic. (high end as freq, not price)

Great Beginners Mic

I have owned 3 of these mics. They rock, great quality and sound for the price. Great for the start of the home studio world. Great for demo's and overall applications. MXL mics are very impressive to any musician of any level.

PRETTY GOOD

Good quality microphone for the price. It has nice details in the highs,a fairly flat midrange, & good bass. Sensitivity is excellent.I use this microphone mainly for vocals and acoustic guitars. On vocals use a windscreen about 6-8" away, it's a tad bright, but can be fixed with eq.. It's a condenser microphone and needs phantom power, I use it with an Art tube mp.I think the build quality is excellent, I like this microphone.

Really nice for the price

I have used this mic for primarilly vocal recording, though I have recorded sax, accoustic guitar, and a guitar amp with it as well. While it is not the best mic you will ever hear, it is quite good. It is quite warm on vocals. I'm just worried that one day it will slip through the shock mount. The only thing I would ask for is a Bass boost/cut and a 10dB pad, which they introduced with the 990s, I believe.

Great Microphone, Great Price

This is really a fantastic mic for the price it's at. I use it at band practice to record the drums, and it picks up with such clarity and definition every hit. Also good for open-mic recordings too. I tried it with piano and vocals as well and it functions fine. Great Microphone.

Great Buy!

This condenser was the perfect purchase for my recording rig. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I purchased this condenser and it is working awesome. Using with a presonus firepod running cubase SX.

Bang For The Buck

This mic has done me nothing but good. I know what you pay for is what you get, but I think this was a bit of a steel. I've owned the MXL 990 for a little over 2 years now and the vocal product of this mic is much richer than 69 bucks. When positioned at a reasonable distant from the vocalist's mouth at the right angle, the MXL 990 performs like a champ. Though there is much higher quality microphones out there, for the price of with the proper placement this mic can turn water into wine.

for the kid startin out

I remember before I bought this mic, about 3 years ago, I read a review from someone that works for Adult Swim, stating that they actually use this mic for cartoon vocals(!) I'm not surprised, after all it is decent... ESPECIALLY FOR THE PRICE. If you're scrapin for cash and want a studio mic, this'll do BUT make sure you have an ANALOG mixer of some sort to provide the phantom power... plus, it picks up all sorts of external noises so keep it away from the computer, and if you have time and resources BUILD A VOCAL BOOTH

You get what you pay for

Well first of all, for the guy who wrote the comment about the phantom power, I hate to break it to you but ALL condenser Mics require phantom power. You shouldn't have bought it if you couldn't supply the phantom power. But Moving on, this mic is not a bad deal at all. I have used it to record vocals, guitars, and some other instuments. If you really want to improve the sound, then get some GOOD pre-amps and you will be pretty impressed at the change in sound quality. However for those who think they might be dissapointed with this mic, just remember that you get what you pay for. You can't purchase an MXL mic and expect it to sound like a AKG or a NEUMANN. Be Logical.
