Value-packed workhorses!

I bought a half dozen of these microphones a few years ago when I suddenly found myself short of mics for a big recording job. They aren't Neuman U87's, but for my money, you get 75% there for only 5% of the money. I didn't expect too much from these mics, considering the price and I thought that I would just sell them when I was able to replace them with "better" (read: more expensive) mics. These mics have their own character and frankly, I like them a lot. It's been many years and although I have more expensive mics to choose from now, I still use the 2003's frequently as drum overheads and even vocal mics. I've currently got a 603S pointed at my drummer's high hat.

Excellent Mic Package!

I purchased the MXL 2003/603S Microphone Pac Plus simply for the awesome MXL 2003, and it turned out to be the best mic purchase I've ever made! After trying the MXL 2003 for the first time, I was blown away! Compared to other mics I?ve used, this one is so clear and perfect that it?s now the one I use for pretty much everything! The 3 micron diaphragm makes this the best mic you can purchase at anywhere near this price level, and the flat 20Hz-20kHz frequency response is phenomenal! I use the MXL 603S to record the mountain dulcimer and didgeridoo, and also use it in front of a bass amp cabinet. This mic excels in each of those applications, and can even work nicely in a pinch for vocals. The compact size of the mic also makes it ideal for hanging above a drum kit or choir. These mics are well-built, and provide a great value for great-quality sound!

Great Way to Start Your Mic Collection

I purchased the MXL 2003/603S mic pack after reading numerous glowing reviews and speaking with friends. This was the first professional mic purchase I made, and I used thes mics exclusively for over a year. They've been used to record vocals, acoustic guitar, accordian, ukelele, percussion, and almost anything else I could throw at them. The 603S is an amazing little condensor mic--it sounds wonderful, clear, and crisp on most acoustic instruments, and is my first choice when recording thes types of things. The 2003, while not bad, does have a bit midrangy tone that I found unsuitable for my voice, but performs nicely when I've used it to mic guitar cabinets or for use as a room mic. I have had such a positive experience with these mics that I went out and purchased another MXL--the V67, which is a bit darker and has become my mic of choice for vocals. Overall, you won't find a better deal for the quality of mics you get in this package. Higly recommended!

A great value!

I have used MXL mics many times and I always spread the word about how good they are. I can not believe that they make mics this good for such a low proce. I usualy use this package for an acoustic guitar and I get excellent results everytime. The MXL 2003 is also very good for capturing vocals (for low to mid range voices). I have used this package many times and I have never heard a client complain about them ever. I have had many complements about the acoustic guitar tone and I point them to this package. I have 3 MXL 3003 mics and 3 MXL 603s mics and I will never get rid of them.

Better than you would think

These two Mics do have distinct different sounds from each other. The 603 sure surprised me with it's full sound and I seemed to get the best results using it for distant recording because it does have a bit of a quick, tight resonce to it and the room comes into play respectfully with the source I tried to record. Kinda like wanting the live room sound without the boomyness. The 2003 did well close up. For vocals, use a windscreen or do the hang from above the nose thing.. It's gonna pick up all the air coming at it. Also the isolation from the stand is recomended. I was looking for more of a breathy vocal but that is gonna cost a lot more then this. All in all, it did the job without much to complain about. I like it. Gonna keep using it.
