Very Nice, Very Light

from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 4-String Fretless Electric Bass Guitar:

Excellent fit and finish (except for the knobs, see below). The transparent black finish of the basswood body is very nice to look at, which makes the bass attractive without being gaudy. The fret lines are sort of a gold color, which look good with the brown parts of the ebony fingerboard. Sounds great. There's plenty of growl in this thing, and the passive electronics are very clean and let you dial in a wide range of tone. It feels great. Very light (weighs right at 8 lbs, but seems less). The asymmetrical neck profile works out well; very noticeable at first, but before long it is completely natural. There is little or no finish on the back of the maple neck, which feels very good. The one thing I did not like, which earned the four star rating, is the fit of the knobs. They are pushed down so far they rub against the finish of the body. I was able to pull them away from the body and they stay there and move smoothly, but the damage to the finish was already done. Warning: GC incorrectly specifies this bass as having a 24 fret length, but it only goes to 21. I was a bit disappointed about this when it arrived, but I never really play there anyway. Also, it would be nice if GC would post an accurate photo. Mine came with basic D'Addario round-wound strings, which have a tone I don't particularly care for. I am experimenting with different flat-found strings, which are said to be much gentler on a fretless fingerboard.
