A J-style bass with hand-made quality at a budget friendly price.

The Kingston Sarasota 4-string Fretless electric bass has a carved basswood body that is light in weight, but heavy in tone. This innovative bass has the tried-and-true 34" scale length with a bolt-on maple neck that has an asymetrical neck profile that is incredibly fast and comfortable. A fretless lined ebony fingerboard has a 24 fret length. The Buzz Feiten tuning system insures that this bass plays in tune in all positions. The Sarasota is loaded with two MTD passive single coil J-style pickups that deliver a broad spectrum of great tones. Controls include two volumes and one tone. The MTD quick release bridge allows for instant string changes. Case sold separately.

The MTD Kingston Saratoga bass is a modern re-imagining of a classic J bass, at a budget-friendly price. It is Michael Tobias' innovations like the asymetrical neck and Quick-Release bridge which sets the Saratoga apart from the crowd.

  • Very Nice, Very Light

As reviewed by Michael Pearce on 10/21/2013

Excellent fit and finish (except for the knobs, see below). The transparent black finish of the basswood body is very nice to look at, which makes the bass attractive without being gaudy. The fret lines are sort of a gold color, which look good with the brown parts of the ebony fingerboard. Sounds great. There's plenty of growl in this thing, and the passive electronics are very clean and let you dial in a wide range of tone. It feels great. Very light (weighs right at 8 lbs, but seems less). The asymmetrical neck profile works out well; very noticeable at first, but before long it is completely natural. There is little or no finish on the back of the maple neck, which feels very good. The one thing I did not like, which earned the four star rating, is the fit of the knobs. They are pushed down so far they rub against the finish of the body. I was able to pull them away from the body and they stay there and move smoothly, but the damage to the finish was already done. Warning: GC incorrectly specifies this bass as having a 24 fret length, but it only goes to 21. I was a bit disappointed about this when it arrived, but I never really play there anyway. Also, it would be nice if GC would post an accurate photo. Mine came with basic D'Addario round-wound strings, which have a tone I don't particularly care for. I am experimenting with different flat-found strings, which are said to be much gentler on a fretless fingerboard.
