Ok, I got on the Vista Laptop thing early, a HP-DV9000 with 2gb ram, plus plus. Loved the thing, until I moved over my audio equipment, like cubase, Reason, recycle, and my, uptil now, trusted FireBox....did not want to work well under Vista. Now the good folks at Guitarcenter, where willing to let me exchange the firebox to the Ultralite...And I had sorta medium hopes that my software and such would work ok. But boy, ohh, boy where I suprised, everything worked. And the pre amps are way above the Presonus unit in terms of sound quality and presence. I knew that I had to get all the drivers from Motu's website (Vista drivers). And it took the whole 5 min to do that, and worked right away, no reboot, no restart, nothing, bam bam, and voila. The features on it is a lot more pro-like than the Firebox, a display, so you can route the mains(or any of the i/o) to the phones, big plus for me. An on/off button, I know it sounds dumb, but on a PC laptop you dont get the 6 pin firewire, so you cant run it on bus power. All my software runs great under it, and somehow the latency seems less both on midi(keyboards, padkontrol) and the D/A playback from Reason. Felt tighter, on top of things, if I can use those phrases. Worth every dollar, and then some (15% re-stock fee) Not only step up quality wise, but cause I dont want to revert to XP if I can help it. I purchased the Motu Ultralite about a month ago. This device is great for audio, but the midi inputs and outputs are not being recognized by my Imac G5 duo core, Garageband, Reason 3.0 or Cubase SE3. I have used different forums and tried the suggestions with no success. I have emailed Motu tech support and have not received any response. Make sure that you know that you computer is compatible with this device or you will deal with all the problems I currently have.

For the price, it can't be beat!

By MisterTomlinson

from Lynchburg, VA

I just recently bought one of these. I needed a FireWire Interface for recording acoustic guitar using a Fishman Rare Earth Blend Pickup and a Rode NT4 Stereo Mic (has two capsules/channels) so I needed at least 3 inputs. 2 XLR (with preamps) and a 1/4 in.I First went with the PreSonus FireBox, because of the price and popularity. It did everything I need, but horribly. Mainly, the preamps were terrible. The Rode NT4 is a great mic and I've heard favorable results using it, but when hooked into the FireBox, the sound quality was just poor. So, I decided to give the UltrLite a shot. Man, this thing sounds awesome. Now my Rode NT4 picks up sounds I can't even hear. The preamps on this thing are awesome. As for the design and looks, I love the LCD screen... looks a lot fancier than the FireBox and sturdy in construction.Overall, the UltraLite does everything I need and looks good too.

I can only say WOW!!!!!!!!!

By Gus Montalvo

From the ease of installation, to the quality of the pre amps, to this thing being built like a tank...I'm sold. MOTU has scored a 10 and I intend to save me some frustrations by continuing to buy MOTU products as I expand my studio. Good job MOTU.

MOTU Rocks

By schnelsr

from Milwaukee, WI

Excellent product. Support is fantastic. There are some Windows firewire driver issues but they are with Windows, not MOTU. You may run into them with any firewire device and MOTU's support will help you through them. I haul this thing all over and managed to break a knob but MOTU mailed one out at no charge. GREAT PRODUCT, GREAT COMPANY!

Flawless On My MacBook Pro

By Sons of Rome

from Lawrence, KS

Bad stuff first... It doesn't work on my PC. Don't know if it's the drivers or what, but strange pops, noises, crackles then nothing.NOW TO THE GOOD... On my MacBookPro I love it. The preamps rock. Definitely pro quality. Tons of I/O!!! I love the fact it can function as a standalone mixer. It's a really rugged piece as well. The knobs are a little close together but that's a small price to pay. I have used this for live mixing and recording and it passed the initial trial-by-fire with flying colors. The AudioDesk software is really good too for the value. Very low latency playback and a ton of features make it good for anyone who is serious about mobile recording.

best deck ever

By guitarguru

from harrison ny

i did my fair share of testing and research when buying this. it blows all the other compitition out of the water with no issue. firs off it has the most inputs of any deck out their and it is the only deck that has an exual amount of outputs. i have a mak g4 and it runs great with it. it has many practicel aplications, i use it as either a recording deck straight in to my computer, or for more of a live settin i use it as a gobetween for my 4 buss mixer. it has unmatched sound quality and the outputs allow for mixdown with real faders, if u like the old school style. it cacn be powered right by the computer making it great for on the go things and i have yet to try it but it can act as a stand alone mixer. i woul definatly go with this deck. their is noting to compare eather for a studio with an 8 bus mixing board of going right in to your computer it is great and works great. it also leaves room to expan on if u want to get a mixxer or a new mixer and conect it, it is by far the best product out theri

Not very PC friendly

By Darren Ramey

from Winston-Salem, NC

I do like the UltraLite, but I am not sure I love it yet. From what I've read since I bought it, the drivers are better for the Mac than for the PC. It will not work at all with many FireWire chipsets. It works great on my desktop PC but my laptop requires a complete power down (restarting isn't good enough) every time I want to use it or all I get is static. MOTU have no official tech support boards. There has been one driver update (for PC) since the unit was introduced, but no mention of any changes/fixes at all. That said, I love it when it works. I replaced a Mackie CFX 12 and in my opinion the preamps sound much better in the UltraLite. I?m no pro, so don?t ask me to define better. I have mostly used it to record vocals, acoustic guitars. I have used the SPDIF in/outs to record my electric guitar direct and that went without a hitch as well. I don?t want to turn anyone off of the UltraLite, just make sure you do your research especially if you aren?t using a Mac.

My Prayer Were Answered!

By kray

I use to use the Tascam US-428 and I never got it working correctly. On my first try with the UltraLite I had success. I use it with both a desktop and a laptop. My laptop isn't the fastest thing around so it's nice that the UltraLite does some of the audio processing for you. I recorded 4 tracks at once using the UltraLite and my laptop - no drop outs. I'm in heaven!! It's worth every penny. Although it might be difficult to use as a live mixer you can do that too.

Huge step up in sound quality

By Dan.

from Columbus, OH

I know this isn't the best Firewire interface made but it is definitely a pro quality piece. I had a Roland FA-66 firewire interface that I was unhappy with the lack of gain on the headphone bus. It was nearly impossible to get the level of my dynamic mic input loud enough to hear with my DAW output. I read that this unit had a good amount gain to drive monitor style headphones and it solved that problem completely. But, what I wasn't expecting was the increased quality of the audio/digital conversion and/or mic pre. I don't know which it is but my recorded guitar tracks are like night and day in difference. The Roland sound is thin and digital sounding compared to the Ultralite (dumb name). This unit makes my amp'd guitar tone fat and warm and it sits in the mix way better. This unit was at the edge of my price range and for the money I was hoping it would be an improvement and it definitely is.

PERFECT

By Faron

from Austin, Texas

Damn, I love this thang. Straight out of the box it worked flawlessly. I was up and running and recording in about 5 minutes. I took my laptop and my Ultralite into my office and in my downtown started mixing two recordings for a new CD that I am doing. Put this together with TCElectronics Powercore compact and you have a very capable portable compact recording solution. Worth every dollar I spent on it.
