I purchased this device w/ the intent of utilizing the THRU function so that I didn't have to have my Logic Pro 9 DAWS running to use my external Roland synth. I installed everything per the instructions. Mac Core MIDI recognized the unit right away and allowed easy configuration as it always does. Logic Pro 9 initializes to Core MIDI at start up, so it saw the MOTU also - no prob, right? Wrong. The interface work one time (first time); allowing MIDI IN/OUT/THRU to my external synth from my keyboard and Logic Pro. But after that one time, the unit stopped working w/ Logic Pro or Garage Band or anything from my MacBook Pro. The THRU function still worked fine between the keyboard and the synth; but no MIDI data from the computer. Core MIDI still recognized it though. Waste of money. I purchased because I have the MOTU 8pre that works very well and I expected the same of this item, but was sadly mistaken. MOTU has a serious USB/MIDI driver flaw in Mac OS X. Returning unit and will try an M-Audio unit instead.
As far as MIDI interfaces go, they tend to have most of the same features. That?s why the MOTU Fastlane is so good, it provides the basic features of a MIDI interface (good compatibility, MIDI through) and package it in a small, portable, easy to set up interface. It?s small enough to toss into a keyboard bag or a backpack, and since it doesn?t have any power supply, it?s ideal for using with a laptop or to bring over to a buddy?s house.
