MOTU Ethno World Sound Virtual Instrument Specifications:

  • MOTU Ethno Instrument has the following system requirements:
  • A minimum of 512 MB of RAM is required. However, since Ethno Instrument loads samples (or a portion of the samples) into the computer's RAM add as much RAM as possible to your computer; at least 1024 MB (1 GB) is highly recommended. Ethno also allows samples to be streamed directly from disk thus freeing up RAM
  • A large hard drive (preferably at least 40 GB). See below for Mac and Windows specific hard drive requirements
  • A free USB port for the iLok USB key. Note that if you have multiple products which use iLoks for authorization you can consolidate multiple authorizations onto a single iLok
  • A CD/DVD disk drive for installation
  • For Macintosh:
  • A G4 500 MHz Power Macintosh or faster; a G5 or Intel-based Mac is recommended. Dual-processor machines are also highly recommended
  • OS 10.3.9 or higher. Version 10.4 or higher is recommended
  • A hard drive with enough space to hold the 8 GB sound files. The drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (also known as HFS+). Journalling can be on or off
  • An audio sequencer software package that hosts MAS, AU, VST, or RTAS/HTDM instrument plug-ins. As MSI has 34 outputs (stereo main outs + 16 stereo aux outputs), the host needs to support instruments with greater than 32 outputs. Alternately, Ethno Instrument can be used as a standalone application
  • For Windows:
  • An 800MHz Pentium III-based PC compatible or faster. Dual-processor machines are also highly recommended
  • Windows XP
  • An Open GL-compatible video card with the latest graphics drivers
  • A hard drive with enough space to hold the 8 GB sound files. The drive must be formatted as NTFS
  • An audio sequencer package that hosts DXi, VST, or RTAS/HTDM instrument plug-ins. As MSI has 34 outputs (stereo main outs + 16 stereo aux outputs), the host needs to support instruments with greater than 32 outputs. Alternately, Ethno Instrument can be used as a standalone application

Definitely worth of time and money...

I own the MOTU Ethno Instrument for more than six months, and, needless to say, I have used it extensively for several film score projects. It is not that kind of a software instrument that one would lounch and get the immediate creative satisfaction. Once you learn how to choose and play the instruments, as well as actually use the sampler to get the sound you are looking for - this is a true jem (the instuments that use original and authentic tuning ARE one-octave-limited, which is not necessarily a negative factor). The reverb presets are beautiful and the interface is more than user friendly. The included loops are very useful; nevertheless, their usage should be very selective, for that IS where they shine. The only downside is the iLock key - it is slighly outdated protection device. I highly recommend this product, especially for film scores and that little spicy component to any kind of contemporary music.

Not Worth The Price Tag

Maybe I?m missing something. Limited key range on most of the instruments. Most of the patches can be found on Roland, Korg and Yamaha synths except for the Kora?s that was a surprise. An Ilock. Interface has operational bugs. I?m a big fan of the virtual environment, and it is very difficult to displease me when it comes to it. I think MOTU should have thought this one out a bit more. Definitely wasted money, and being it is software it can not be returned.
