An easy-to-use product that requires no programming, the MIDI Solutions Quadra Merge merges all messages appearing at any of its 4 inputs to its output. Requires no batteries or power supply to operate.
Seems to work just fine. I'm surprised that it can do all this without requiring me to plug it in to the wall socket. The casing is plastic, however. I wish it were metal. So I'll have to be careful with the device, but so far so good. I'm replacing a MOTU 8 x 8 merger/router device which takes a wall plug, and became way too flaky for live work. I do miss having multiple outputs, as the Quadra Merge has only 1. But I feel it was money well spent.
Upgrading from a single M-audio keyboard playing samples from within your computer - to multiple MIDI triggering devices used to tap the power of your favorite external tone generator - all while simultaniously recording MIDI - data integrity can suffer. This MIDI data sum device allows you to merge four keyboard MIDI outputs (or other MIDI triggering devices) into a single MIDI cable. This configuration allows the external tone generator MIDI data priority. You monitor exactly what you are playing, unaltered by an over complex MIDI configuration. Additionally, the recorded MIDI data is treated with greatest integrity by having the tone generators THRU port connected directly to your computers MIDI in port. Any minimal amount of latency created in THIS configuration can be corrected by the software's buffer/timming offset adjustment. I believe it to be a better configuration than what you are 'forced' into configuring with the M-Audio's midi sport 4 x 4. The configuration with the Midi Sport 4 x 4 (my old set up) created additional connection links that may have degraded the integrity of the monitored recording. The Midi sport's data path (when useing multiple triggering devices, and an external tone generator) made too many connection points before it made it's way to the tone generator. With the Midisport you had: 1 connection at the Midi Sport's input; 1 at its USB output; 1 at the computer's USB input (who knows what the Data was doing in the computer before it went to the USB output) 1 at the comuter's USB output; 1 connection at the tone generator's USB input. The price difference is an added bonus.
