Overview

Recording professionals around the world rely on M-Audio Studiophile reference monitors for exceptional sonic accuracy. The Studiophile BX5a Deluxe monitors update M-Audio's bestsellers with new waveguides and enhanced driver integration for a cohesive and refined sound. The 5" low-frequency driver cones are crafted from Kevlar, an extremely resilient material. Curved cone design coupled with high-temperature voice coils and damped rubber surrounds deliver excellent fidelity and durability. The 1" waveguide-loaded, high-frequency drivers are made of magnetically shielded silk domes for a crisp top end that's gentle on the ears. 70-watt bi-amped power and expertly tuned crossovers round out a first-rate pair of reference monitors with a footprint small enough to fit just about anywhere.

Deluxe edition
The Studiophile BX5a Deluxe monitors update the best-selling M-Audio BX5a system with a variety of enhancements. The updated waveguide delivers excellent imaging. A new low-frequency transducer provides well-defined bass. Custom amplifier tuning enhances the integration between the high and low frequencies, delivering refined spectral balance and a smoother response. An elegant new industrial design completes the package.

Kevlar drivers
M-Audio's Studiophile BX5a Deluxe monitors employ Kevlar for low-frequency driver construction. Kevlar's high mechanical and thermal resilience makes it ideal for use in speaker cones. M-Audio's engineers also created a curved conical design that improves room dispersion. High-damping reliable rubber surrounds provide percussive musical bass, and also ensure that the cone reaches its optimal excursion for accurate reproduction.

Silk-dome, waveguide-loaded, high-frequency drivers
M-Audio's high-frequency domes are made from natural silk to counter the high Q ringing that's inherent in the poorly crafted metallic materials commonly found in other monitors. In addition, M-Audio's waveguides refine the high-frequency response. M-Audio's FerroFlow technology uses ferrofluid liquid cooling to dissipate heat for maximum efficiency and extended usage.

Bi-amplified efficiency
Active monitors have a distinct advantage over unpowered monitors because the built-in power amps are designed to work with the drivers and crossovers in a tuned system. Bi-amplification further refines the concept by dedicating separate power amps to the highs and lows. Combined with a finely tuned crossover, this design insures that both the high- and low-frequency drivers are asked to deliver only the frequencies they are most efficient at reproducing.

Rear-ported cabinet design
The BX5a Deluxe monitor's cabinet is integrally designed with its other components for optimal performance - right down to rounded corners for reduced edge diffraction and superior imaging. Custom rear-port design audibly reduces the turbulence and resulting distortion caused by poorly designed ports.

Magnetically shielded for desktop use
Unchecked, the electromagnetic waves emanating from your speakers can wreak havoc with your computer's video monitor or a nearby TV. The Studiophile BX5a Deluxe monitors are magnetically shielded so all of your electronic equipment can coexist on your desktop without interference.

I bought a pair of these for my laptop for when I'm not at my desktop. As the way with audio gear goes, most buyers will profess these sound like fantasy products costing way above their said purchase. They don't. Really, they don't. The BX5a are a bit grating with the highs. While the philosophy of a good monitor is to create a flat frequency response, our ears do not hear all frequencies at the same volume relative to its actual dB. Sibilances are an offender on the BX5a, meaning in all likelihood you may under mix hihats or snares. Also BX5a lack the dispersion of higher end speakers, making them a bit finicky (Granted they are half the cost of an average pair of near field monitors). They present the material with decent detail and if you're used to cheap speakers they might surprise you with the ability to articulate detail but they're hardly beyond that of a normal studio monitor. These are the "My first monitor" of near-fields. They're decent but they're hardly worth more than the sticker price.

I AM IN LOVE

By viatheradio

from lakeland fl

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Ok, so I think my title says it all, but let me explain. The bass that comes out of these things gives me goosebumps. its not too fat, and not too tinny, tinny is that a word? anyway. the mids sound flat which is good, cause you want to hear the mids for noise reduction. it works perfect. one suggestion is that you should get some foam props for the cabinets or your highs will squeal a little, better yet what i did was cut a memory foam pillow in half and propped them up on top. that got rid of the annoying high pitched frequencies that buzz if there is no cushion under them. WOW that's all I can say. These things are worth the small price tag.

Where Have They Been All My Life?

By WT

from Houston, TX

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Good grief....can these things be for real!? After reading all of the reviews that gush about the BX5a being so marvelous, I broke down and got a pair to use with my Power Mac G5 / Cubase LE4 / Lexicon Alpha project studio just to see if it was a lot of bull. The verdict: unbelievable. I've heard things in MP3s that I've been playing for years and never heard. All the hoopla about the full, tight low end? They ain't lyin', friends. These things are perfect for a small space setup. The little silk domes are my ears' new best friends! No coloration, no distortion, no kiddin'. If you don't have a pair of these yet, why not? Consider yourselves so advised; prepare to hear your mixes for the first time.

Has its Pro's and Cons

By Chris

from Lauderhill Fl

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Great sound for the price. however i was dissapointed that 39 days later one of my monitors just mysteriously stopped working. and when i contacted M-audio to replace they were kind enough to ackowledge my 1 year warrenty. however it cost me $40 bucks to ship the monitors back to them. I dont think i should have to pay anything it was their defective product so why should i have to pay for shipping? Like i said earlier good sound for the price but the down fall i would say would be their approach of fixing an obvious production error as many people had had the same complaint about one of the monitors clunking out.

Best in the store for the money

By Ed

from Detroit, MI

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I listened to all the speakers side by side in the store. The BX5a was the best to my ears by far. The others had obvious coloring and I felt like I wasn't hearing all the information like I did with the BX5a speakers. Got them home and hooked them directly to my Mac Mini, fired up Garage Band and was blown away by the sound quality and volume these little thing can put out. My eyes opened wide and I just kept saying "wow!". They are really amazing for the money.

BX5a replaced my Tannoy Reveals

By Fred

from Orange, CA

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Technology has made some leaps since my last setup of passive monitors and a power amp. I'm sold on active monitors. I'll leave the power matching to the engineers who design these great products. I used the BX5a to replace an aging QSC/Tannoy setup. I couldn't be happier. Admittedly, this is for a simple small studio. But, these babies deliver. The bass response is as advertised. Tight and percussive - inspirational on fretless bass. I don't have any problems with the highs. Acoustic guitar, piano, flute all reply naturally enough through the BX5a's. Something in this price range undoubtedly will have some shortcomings. But, I haven't picked them out yet! And the PRICE? If you are considering these, don't hesitate.

will not buy again

By Tom Johnson

from Thomaston Georgia

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Got these things home and within one week the blue indicator light went out. Next had buzzing sound to develop in one woofer took back to Guitar Center and traded for another one, I'm in to this less that one year now have a humming noise in the woofer again. I will replace with a different brand next. I love the sound I got out of them but the reliability of these things suck at best. I do not push them hard so they should have held up better even for the money.

Nice Speakers but Beware of the Sticker

By Nat Eastham

from Edmond, OK

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I probably don't have the ears to give these speakers an accurate technical review, but I have some feedback for the "geniuses" in marketing that thought it was okay to affix a sticker to the front of each monitor touting its new features. Performance and technical features aside, when you buy a piece of quality audio gear you expect it to look absolutely perfect, just like any stereo receiver or a DVD recorder. So imagine my annoyance when each speaker had a red sticker on the front. Surely this sticker would peel off nicely, and believe me, I've peeled off many stickers in my day from various items, I know how to do it slowly and carefully, but I assure you it was impossible in this case. The sticker is the cheapest paper possible, and it tears up within the first 1/8" of peeling. The adhesive they used must have come from the depths of Hell, because this stuff is like a cross between epoxy and super-glue. You can scrape it until your thumbnail is torn up, and it just smears around and refuses to come off in its entirety. I've probably spent 30 minutes scraping on each speaker and still the ugly adhesive scars remain. So, when I look at these speakers, instead of seeing a beautiful pristine piece of audio gear I just see those ugly adhesive smears. So I wonder who the genius was that decided to have the stickers slapped onto each unit? M-Audio, if you're out there reading this, pull some units from the assembly line and try to peel that sticker off, then you'll realize that you have just infuriated every owner that has to go to the trouble to attempt to remove it, and that no matter how hard they try, the cosmetics will still be ruined. You do not need to deface a piece of audio gear with a sticker, any more than you'd slap a bumper sticker onto the door of a Lamborghini Countach and expect the owner to peel it off. It's pure insanity. You guys ruined what would have been a cosmetically perfect item.

Good value

By Mitchell Casel

from Orefield, PA

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I went out for a search for monitors for my home studio that weren't too big or too expensive. Comparing monitors side-by-side, it came down to these and the Rokit 5's; both are $300 a pair, both have 5" woofers and 1" tweeters, and the power output difference between them is only 5 watts. Despite the Rokit 5 having a high-frequency adjuster, I found the M-Audio BX5's to have a fuller sound that allowed me to pick out more details from the audio, especially in the highs. The only con I found with these in my testing is that these monitors DO NOT like unbalanced cables, but I use balanced connections 95% of the time, so it's not an issue for me. It may be an issue for people with lower-end interfaces, so the Rokit 5 wins if you need to use unbalanced connections, including RCA connectors. ----- In conclusion, if the Rokit 6 is just out of your budget range, skip the Rokit 5, and grab the BX5a instead... you won't regret it.
