Score your music
The new Score Editor lets you view, edit, arrange, and print MIDI data as music notation. Whether you want to compose music using the notation tools or transcribe MIDI data into notation, the Score Editor features everything you need and nothing you don't. Write parts on a single staff or grand staff. Place and edit notes, and edit the meter and key signature at will. Add chord symbols and chord diagrams to sessions. Transcribe MIDI parts in real time. Print out a score in its entirety or print only certain instrumental parts. You can even export sessions as Sibelius (.sib) files for further finessing in Sibelius.
Complete MIDI production
Pro Tools M-Powered 8 features a comprehensive array of new MIDI tools. Gain extensive MIDI editing power through MIDI Editor windows, which can display MIDI and automation data for Instrument, MIDI, and Auxiliary Input tracks. Work with new features that let you separate, consolidate, and mute MIDI notes; scrub and shuttle through parts; view superimposed MIDI and Instrument tracks for easier arrangement editing; and audition velocity changes. Edit MIDI automation and continuous controller (CC) data through multiple Automation and Controller lanes. Even watch your musical handiwork scroll by in real time during playback.
Transpose with Elastic Pitch
As a complement to Pro Tools software's powerful Elastic Time tempo and time manipulating tool, Pro Tools M-Powered 8 introduces Elastic Pitch, which allows you to effortlessly manipulate or correct the pitch of any audio region in real time. Easily transpose an entire audio region”up or down up to four octaves”without affecting its timing or tempo. Fix a less than perfect vocal performance by altering the pitch of individual notes. Or create cool sound effects by linking pitch changes with time compression/expansion using the Varispeed algorithm.
Comp Tracks to Perfection
Creating flawless performances is easier than ever. Pro Tools M-Powered 8 features new track compositing workflows, enabling you to quickly and easily piece together the best possible version of a performance from multiple recording passes. Simply loop record multiple takes on an Audio track, view and audition the takes in Playlist view, select the best parts from the tracks' alternate playlists, and copy them to the main playlist with a single click. You can also rate regions to help identify which takes you like the most when compositing playlists.
New editing and mixing capabilities
Pro Tools M-Powered 8 equips your system with even more editing and mixing capabilities. Lock regions to the timeline to prevent them from being inadvertently moved or edited. Use the Automation and Controller lanes to view and edit track automation (such as volume, pan, and plug-in automation) and MIDI CC data (such as velocity, pitch bend, and modulation) without changing track views. And with 10 inserts to play with per track, you can now use more plug-ins than ever before.

For anyone who doesn't know, and as I found out, "educational" means no free updates, you're stuck with 8. When they come out with 9, you either get to buy ProTools again or fall behind. Also, if you're getting this with the Fast Track Pro, M-audio, as of me writing this review, HAS NOT come out with a driver compatable with Windows Vista Home. I haven't even been able to use ProTools yet because of this. Be sure to check that there is a driver for your hardware that is compatable with your OS before buying.
Digi is desperately trying to catch up with Logic and, with Release 8, Pro Tools has made some big steps in that direction. PT8 is a long ways from having the kind of universal audio production and performance capabilities of Logic, but it's also a long ways from the last version of PT. Overdubs are handled in a much more sophisticated manner than previous versions, some useful new MIDI instruments are now included with PT8 (including a pretty good drum machine), and the score editor is an appreciated new feature for PT. If you've used Sonar or Logic, all of those have been with us for a while. Like I said, Digi is catching up with the competition. This is only a "breakthrough release" for dedicated PT users. The appearance is oddly cartoonish. Some like that, I don't. It seems that the GUI designers have an affinity for garish colors and hyped 3-D and it wears on you after a few hours of editing. There must be a way to turn these "features" off, but I haven't found it yet.
This program is without a doubt the best there is in pro recording. Yes it can be a bit intimidating at first trying to learn how to operate it, however, once you get down the basics, you can start kicking it up a notch at your own pace. Being that this is what is used in over 90% of professional recording studios, you can make your own recording and bring it to have it mixed at a studio by just bringing a cd with your audio files on it. Great program, beautiful look to it and an incredible amount of adjustments and add-ed on software that is compatible with the program. Highly recommend it if you are looking to get in to serious pro recording at home or at a studio.
ok theres a reason pro tools is used in most PROFESSIONAL studios. pro tools has had a awsome drum machine since version 7. if you now how to use pro tools then there is nothing stoping you from making high quality graet sounding music. thank you
