This is the third Brand I have tried in less than a month of looking for an audio interface that is Snow Leopard compliant. I am using a 2008 2.8 quad core Apple Mac Pro with Logic Pro 9. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and it works flawlessly. No crashes like the other brands that advertise "Snow Leopard Compliant" Having 2 separate headphone outs with separate volume control has proven very useful and convenient. Assignable outs are convenient as well if you have a multi monitor setup. It makes your workflow that much smoother. The sound is extremely clear and better than any of the other audio interfaces i have tried in this price range and below. Dont waste your time finding an audio interface that works with Snow Leopard. This is the one. Easy and simple to use and it just works.

I am experienced and adept at working with computers/tech. I have first-hand experience with this product. I've spent over 100 hours over the last year and a half trying to get this interface to work; I've had luck just a handful of times. I have followed installation and update instructions to the letter. Alas, if you are running a Mac (I have an iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 v. 10.6.8), do not buy this product. There are several reasons why: 1) M-Audio has a software/driver problem that makes recognizing the device a huge issue, if not impossible altogether; 2) M-Audio has ZERO customer support, w/o paying for it, right from the start; and, 3) this device is not hot-pluggable, so if you happen to be moving devices around and forget this and plug it in it will kill the firewire port you plug into! Didn't happen to me, because I happened to check, but I very easily could have not. This interface has serious issues. I've dreamt about running this piece over with my car, or smashing it with a baseball bat; unfortunately I spent way too much money on it... I'm holding onto it only because I'm hoping M-Audio will do something about the driver issue in the near future. A part of me hopes it will never work so I won't feel bad about throwing it into a wood chipper. Also, I don't know if it has become apparent to anyone else, but the same person is writing many of the reviews on this site. I was an editor for a magazine for three years and one thing that you learn reading so many different types of original works is that people have a voice and a style that is all their own, as long as the writer is a frequent writer (which is true for contributors to magazines/copy editors/editors/etc.); This person writes many reviews of products, posing as different people every time on here. I'm guessing one of the site managers, editors, et alia... Pretty lame on the part of guitarcenter.com. Long story short, don't buy this interface (for the lack of customer support from M-Audio alone). Hope this helps!

OS X 8.5 compatible

By Matt Kelemen

from Las Vegas, NV

Was a little concerned when I bought the thunderbolt adapter/ 800-to-400 firewire adapter combo on Amazon and could not produce output, but M-audio's OS 8.4 driver download made my 610 work on my new iMac. Liked the MacBook's mobility, but everything seems good so far on the more powerful new iMacs. Don't fear upgrading

M-Audio ProFire 610 - VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

By Johnny Zawacki

from Owosso, MI

After much consideration in choosing a firewire interface to my Mac Pro, I settled on the M-Audio ProFire 610. At this point, I'm using it to input instruments & voice into GarageBand. Set-up was simple and the operation seamless. Previously, I had been using various analog devices, run through an iMic. They worked, but not this well, nor was the quality of the audio as good as the 610. I especially like being able to run multiple, independent inputs AND have two headphone outputs. This works great when monitoring someone else, though I'm recording them. The addition of phantom power eliminates the need of an external phantom power supply (I've already stuck my ART on the shelf). As noted in the title, I recommend the 610 very highly.

Best Interface I Have Used By Far!!!

By Cody Hardy

from Holland, Michigan

This is a great interface for anyone who is just getting into recording or those who are more experienced. I have had a couple interfaces in the past, one being the Line 6 Pod Studio UX2. The Profire 610 makes that look like a child's play toy! The power and clarity out of this is just amazing! It also has phantom power, which running through this, my condenser mic sounds incredible! I Highly recommend this product!

Replaced the Mbox 2

By Ian

from Dallas, TX

I recently purchased the ProFire 610 to replace an Mbox 2. I had originally planned to upgrade to an Mbox 3 until the Pro Audio SME at Guitar Center pointed out that I could go to the ProFire for better pre amps and A/D converters, and upgrade Pro Tools LE to Pro Tools 9 for less money. The decision was good one. The ProFireۡs sound is superior to the Mbox 2 and I have not experienced latency problems. The new interface gives me a better sound and a lot more inspiration to create and record my music.

Very nice DAC's, nice build quality, stable

By Jeff

from NY, NY

I used this for about 4 months and loved it. It has better DAC/ADC than my current more expensive solution. I miss it and want it back to use as a mixer and ADC/DAC hooked up to my current solution. Great build quality and works great with pro tools. Does not crash. M-Audio at its best.

Sound Quality is amazing!

By Rob Rude

from Los Angeles, ca

I purchased this unit because of the i/o compared to the Apogee Duet. I needed a good A/D converter for my Mackie ONYX mixer w/o a fire wire card. I was very pleased with the conversion to Logic Pro. What I didn't expect was to hear how much better the Octane Preamps sound when compared to the Mackie ONYX preamps.. Heck the sound coming out of the Profire was a lot better than the Mackie ONYX mixer period! Bang for buck this is hands down the best product out there. Everyone I've asked regarding sound quality, compared to other products, even Apogee, have all agreed that you will be hard pressed to tell a sonic difference between the profire and other more expensive units, even the DUET/Ensemble. You cannot beat that price with this kind of quality. The unit is built sturdy, the knobs are a huge improvement compared to older Firewire 410. I may even stop using the ONYX mixer all together because this unit just sounds so good. Dual headphone outs are awesome with plenty of gain. Just wish they would sell mounting brackets, but then again they would want you to purchase it's rack mountable older brother. Awesome quality affordable price.

Windows 7 Compatible - Yes

By Mark Rakemaker

from Missouri

Hey there! I wrote an earlier review and since then I've migrated to a new Windows 7 PC and I thought I'd help put your mind at ease. Yes, the ProFire 610 is Windows 7 friendly, which many IO's are NOT. The only trick is that you need to go to "Device Manager", click on your Texas Instruments FireWire Card, and revert the driver back to the "Legacy" one. And make sure that you are using the latest M-Audio Driver. I've had ZERO Problems and I still love the 610!

Rock Solid & Clean

By Mark Rakemaker

from Kansas City, Missouri

(1) Drivers are easy to install and they work! (2) Mixing Software is Channel Assignable & Awesome! (3) Stereo Separation is very distinct. (5) I/O's work like a dream. (6) Very Very Clean Audio! (7) 2 Assignable Headphone Outputs. (*) I've owned a number of audio interfaces and this one is one of the best that I've had the pleasure to use. It can easily run with my rack gear that costs over a grand. I would highly recommend this as a first and a last choice.
