Overview

The next-generation MobilePre delivers even more pro features than its best-selling predecessor, so you can record a wider variety of sources with higher audio quality. Connect guitars, microphones, keyboards, drum machines, synths, and other devices, and simultaneously record two sources with 24-bit/48 kHz (better-than-CD) sound. Thanks to the ergonomic design, you can control input gain and volume with convenient top-panel knobs, and monitor your recording without latency at the press of a button.

Make music like the pros
The included Pro Tools SE music recording and creation software delivers many of the same powerful features that studio professionals use to create Grammy Award-winning albums, Emmy Award-winning television shows, and Academy Award-winning films. This easy-to-use software lets you create music with up to 24 tracks, and also includes a huge loop library and over 100 virtual instruments to build out your mixes. Add EQ, reverb, and other built-in effects to make your music sound professionally produced.

Universal compatibility
If you want even more tracks, effects, virtual instruments, and loops, MobilePre is compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered software—the same recording platform used by studio professionals around the world. You can also use MobilePre with GarageBand, Logic, Live, Record, and virtually every other popular music application.

Record Your Guitar
Want to record guitar with your computer? What about bass or keyboards? MobilePre can make your dream a reality. Simply connect it via USB to your PC or Mac, plug in your instruments, and you're good to go. You can also use the included Pro Tools SE recording software and effects to layer tracks with your instruments and create professional-sounding mixes.

Record vocals and acoustic instruments
MobilePre features switchable +48V phantom power, so you can connect a studio-grade condenser (powered) microphone like the M-Audio Nova for pro-quality recordings. The interface's two-input, two-output design lets you record a vocal mic and another instrument simultaneously, so you can capture song ideas or collaborate with other musicians.

Monitor without distracting latency
All digital audio recording systems introduce a small delay between the instrument input and the output coming from the computer. This "latency" can be distracting enough to cause pitch and timing errors when you're recording. MobilePre solves this latency problem with a direct monitor button, which lets you hear your instruments directly through the interface before they go into the computer.

Features MobilePre audio interface
  • 24-bit, 48kHz (better-than-CD) audio quality record two sources simultaneously
  • 2 front-panel XLR/TS combo jacks for recording microphones and/or instruments

a great buy for a beginner

By edward osorio

from Oakland, CA

i was debating between this M-Audio model or a Line 6 ux1 and i'm glad i choose this. it takes a while to figure out since i'm a newb at this so i can tell you what i'm using and what works. i'm using a custom built PC powered by a amd phenom 2 so it runs wells every now and then i run into audio errors but it's fixed right away. if you have a sound card, you don't need to remove it but if have a 1/4" output converter you can plug up your computer speaks and it works nicely. it can do vocals, guitars, bass, midi, drum machines which the latter i don't have but it'll be fun to experiment with. install was literally quick for me, i went downstairs to eat dinner and by the time i came back up both the driver and pro tools were install. now pro tools is basically a basic pro tools with different effects and amps from a pantera like amp to metallica, even van halen. i can talk about how its cool and everything, and if you're planning to try out recording go for this model you will no be disappointed, also on a previous review they ran into some weird problems in terms of audio , i have not ran into such problems so far i saved and pulled up my file and everything is there drum loop tracks my guitar tracks everything. it just take some time to figure out everything.

Works... Kind of...

By Buffalo

from BOISE, IDAHO

I bought this product to setup a on-the-go recording studio with my Windows XP laptop. After installing the Drivers for the Mobile Pre, The box sounded good, So I installed Pro Tools SE (which should be removed from the market, selling a program that does not work is stupid). Pro Tools SE is not compatible with Windows XP and this Mobile Pre. After contacting M-Audio with the same Static Issue described in the other 2 reviews (which Is also all over the M-Audio boards and has NO FIX TO DATE). Also, the Sample Rate caused Pro Tools to crash and delete tracks several times. I lowered the sample rate and still had the same issues. I went and bought a new Windows 7 Laptop, 8GB ram, and installed, SAME ISSUES. After a month of working with this product, I can get a halfway decent recording out of REAPER between errors and crashes. I think M-Audio should include free upgrades to M-Powered versions for anyone who has been tortured by their Pro Tools SE software.

Interface, good... Pro Tools, bad

By Julio

from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico

I got this interface for Christmas a while ago. The interface is cool. It has gain level for both channels, headphones and output level, line level inputs, phantom power, its great. It worked pretty good with my guitar. Pro Tools is what gives this product a 3-star review. Pro Tools Se, included in this product, has a big problem. When I tried to record, it sounded good, I could hear the backing track, and myself playing, it was all good. When I pressed playback, the guitar track that I had just recorded was replaced by a horrible static noise. Sometimes it is not even heard! I figured it could be too much gain, since I had used an amp before connecting it to the line level input, so I turned the gain knob all the way down. Nope. Maybe the program had a problem, and it needed an online upgrade, so I checked that it had the latest version of Pro Tools Se to date. It had. When I looked up in forums, absolutely no one knew how to fix this. AVID told that we should just change the preferences to "Mixing" instead of "Recording". It worked like 3 times, and then the noise came again. The most curious thing is, that I worked on various songs, and it jsut stopped working when I started recording "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I don't thing that had anything to do, but I mean, I could record guitar tracks in like 10 songs perfectly, and when I started recording that sames song, the problem came out. So if you want to buy this for the program, I wouldnt recommend it. Or at least, be ready to upgrade it. Although I havent tried it yet, I would recommend the "M-Powered" version of Pro Tools, since it is the cheapest to upgrade to. Or, if you want it for the interface, I would recommend it, bur be prepared with another recording software. This last one is the best choice, since the interface works with different kinds of recording softwares, and Pro Tools doesnt, it only works with M-Audio products.

A Great Value

By ATGuitarist

from Oklahoma City, OK

I needed an audio interface to use with my Mac and debated between USB and Firewire. Obviously, firewire would be the ideal but in the end I opted for USB 2.0 since, at this stage, I only need it to record guitars and vocals and that only one at a time. The MobilePre + Garageband makes a nice setup for recording demos. I am not using Protools SE so I can't really comment on that. The setup was a breeze. Plugged in my KRK speakers, connected the USB cable to my Mac and that was it - nothing to install. I am using an amp modeling effects processor through the XLR port and have no problems. One word of advice if you are using with Garageband, when you create your track you have "Mono 1", "Mono 2", and "Stereo 1/2" listed as input sources. If you are recording from a single source, you will want to select whichever mono source courresponds to the port you are plugged into on the MobilePre. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I did try connecting the guitar cable directly to use some of Garageband's amp models and noticed a hiss still trying to determine the source of that. The amp models in GB aren't as good as my modeler so that is no big deal but it could affect it's usefulness for others. Overall this was a good purchase and I am sure it will serve my purposes for sometime to come.
