Overview

Transform your laptop into a mobile studio with the M-Track Plus from M-Audio. This versatile interface accommodates any input, from an electric guitar to a professional condenser mic-and phantom power is provided. Ideal for on-the-go musicians, the sleek M-Track Plus features durable aluminum case to withstand the rigors of the road. A single USB cable provides both power and a data connection to and from your laptop or desktop computer. The circuit design minimizes laptop battery drain. M-Track Plus also provides MIDI and coaxial S/PDIF connections, to live at the heart of your digital studio.

Accommodating Inputs
M-Track is equipped with a versatile array of inputs to provide the best results with any type of audio source. Each channel offers an XLR input and a balanced 1/4" input. The XLR input is designed to work with microphones or other Lo-Z sources. The phantom power switch delivers 48V to the XLR inputs for use with professional condenser microphones. The 1/4" input can be set to receive line level signal, or switched to allow an electric guitar or bass to be plugged directly into the M-Track. The gain knob ensures the proper input level.

Inserts
Each input channel is also equipped with an insert jack, a professional addition not often found in this class of interface. The insert jack allows studio-grade effects to be used with any input source as you record.

Improved Monitoring for Better Recordings
M-Track offers ultra-low latency monitoring of the input signal-either through the speakers or via headphones. The monitor mix knob adjusts the balance between the direct inputs and the playback from your computer software. In addition, the input signal(s) can be monitored in stereo or mono using the convenient Stereo/Mono switch. This makes it easy to record new parts or add parts to an existing composition. The Headphone output offers its own level control.

MIDI Matters
In addition to the two audio channels, M-Track also support 16 channels of MIDI data and timing information. The MIDI In and MIDI out jack are compatible with all MIDI equipment.

LED Metering
Multi-color LED metering provides instant visual feedback of the main output levels, as well as the status of various M-Track settings.

Software Synergy
Your M-Track Plus interface comes complete with both Avid Pro Tools Express and Ignite from AIR Music Technology (downloadable below). These two programs can work alone or together to help you realize your musical dreams. Capture and arrange your ideas using Ignite, then use those tracks as the foundation for your professional production with Pro Tools Express.

Ignite
Ignite provides a refreshingly original and musician-centric way to quickly capture, combine, and arrange your musical ideas. The intuitive graphic interface encourages you to experiment and explore new directions. Smart MIDI Chord and Phrase Players empower your ideas and bring them to life through over 275 superior instruments sounds created by AIR Music Technology. When you're ready to collaborate with other musicians or take your ideas to the next level, you can share them through SoundCloud, or export your WAV and MIDI files and import them into any DAW software. I purchased this device to go with any number of computers in my set up. The drivers are solid and latency is very good. For the price, I found it to be very versatile and a good value overall with very decent sound quality and midi implementation. Four stars were given as it comes bundled with Pro Tools express which uses the incredibly frustrating I-lock copy protection system. I never got this up and running after a few very annoying hours just registering it with numerous company web sites, very poor instruction, and zero support. Thumbs way down for Avid AND ILOCK for all the hoops I jumped though and hours wasted for nothing. Thumbs up for the solid hardware and drivers. I stuck to using it on my tried and true Sony Acid pro instead.

Bought this setup to use on a PC. Running windows 8. Has been a total nightmare from the beginning. Won't load, won't connect, won't work. No help from Avid and if you open the package? It's yours to keep! You own it. Would love to time travel, go back and never do this.

16 track limitation

Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

PT Express 10.3.3 is what you get with the purchase. PTE has a 16-track limit which is not enough for me. I have 2 Tascam Neo24s slaved via MIDI so I have 48 tracks that I usually get close to using. My plan was to import them in to PT to mix / master. 16 tracks was way short of what I need. User forums do mention this but I did not do my home work. The program's DVD doesn't come with the M-Track +. The installation directions are not easy to follow as one website tells you to do one thing, and another website tells you to do some thing else. Eventually, I got it all installed and it works as described. If 16 tracks will do it for you, go for it!

Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

This is a good little unit that will provide clear, and predominantly quiet sound into your DAW. The only static I've experienced with the unit is the normal to be expected stuff, like when you begin to max out the gain, and volume levels. Pro Tools doesn't exactly come with the unit. You have to register for it at another site, then wait for an iLOK to arrive, so you can download it. So that aspect of the advertisement is a bit misleading. It also took approximately 6 weeks for it to arrive. There just seemed to be too many After it arrives, you'll need to register and account with iLOK to activate the Pro Tools Express, and also download certain drivers. A common problem is that Pro Tools Express doesn't recognize the M Track Plus after installation. M-Audio was very quick to provide the proper links for said drivers, and after their installation, it is problem free. The mic/guitar line can be a bit confusing as well. The manual states if you have active pups, to set it to "Mic/line." This also applies to any preamp system you might have in your guitar/bass, but does not specify that. If you don't you will clip the unit more often than not. The face plate could also be better. I find that you have to set it in an upright position, rather than flat. It's just easier to see the LED's, dials, that way, as well as make any adjustments to your levels on the fly.

Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

Protools not in the box. Is not clear when puchasing online. You have to jump through hoops to order it. It has been longer than the 2 weeks they said for delivery. Still not here yet. Dissappointed with the offer of pro tools (only 1 star for that),BUT m-track plus is a very nice 2 channel interface I am working on my second song since I got it.Works great! I would give it 5 stars if protools offer was more clear. I only purchased it for the protools offer. I have a nice daw, but I need to learn protools for volunteering at my church and that is why i purchased it. I will update this review when I get protools express.

Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

I like the clear sound I am getting. Using Samplitude Music Studio because Pro Tools did not come in the mail yet(which is something I didn't know when I puchased the m-track plus). Not very clear on the site when I ordered. Note I only purchased this to get protools express so I could learn it for volunteering at my church. It did not come in the box. Not a big deal, but I did not know this up front.

Nice, Registration a pain.

By A

from Boise

Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

The m-audio box is small, and of solid construction. It does seem a bit weird to be laying flat. It may be hard on your cables over time. The unit is powered by your computer through the usb cable. Operation of the box is very simple. A bit limiting of course for size and cost, but excellent for the beginner who is probably not going to record an 8 pc drum set day one. (which btw you're probably not going to do with this. lol) But for guitars, bass and vocals you'll be fine. I'm giving this 4 stars because of the pro tools registration process. It's a complete pain and quite lengthy. Protools Express-(pro tools 10) is limited to 16 tracks and there is a good learning curve for all computer based recording software if you haven't used it before. Don't expect to do tons of layering with this version. The amp plugins provided with pro tools express are pretty hurting in my opinion. But for the price of this version, I guess it's to be expected. All in all it works on my old windows 7 64 bit HP computer. Here are some tips if you don't want to spend 2 days pulling your hair out installing: 1. Download java and quicktime your going to need them for ilok and pro tools to install properly. 2. Turn off any after market firewalls. The windows firewall should be fine on. 3. Keep your email open so you can activate your new website accounts. 4. Plug in your usb cable to your m-audio. 5. Go to m-audio's website and download the drivers for your OS. THEY DON'T COME WITH THE UNIT! (Driver Options: You don't have the "MKII". You should have "SP1" if you've done ANY windows updates. 6. On page 4 of your m-audio manual find your OS and make the appropriate setting on your computer. 7. Make sure you have your headphones or monitors plugged in and turn the "Monitor Mix" dial half way between Direct and USB. Obviously.. turn headphones volume up a bit so you can hear. 7. Go to www.inmusicbrands.com/ptex FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! (The ilok manager has the drivers already. The video will tell you to look for them. You don't need to.) 8) When you finally plugin your usb ilok in, it should lite up. Plug it into another usb plug if the little blue lights don't come on. The "Virtual Instruments" download is long. (1.8g - an hour or more) ***You won't hear anything in pro tools until you arm a track. Youtube has some great tutorials for pro tools.

    Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

The M-Track Plus has been an excellent addition to my small home studio, which I only use for my own music. I've spent a lot of time playing with it, and have loved everything about it. While it's not professional grade, I do believe that the right settings, and the right musician could easily make near-professional sounding music using the M-Track Plus. The average listener would never know the difference in most cases.

I think it's important for people to remember that there are a lot of variables involved with recording. Prepare your surroundings properly, and this product will give you excellent results.

For those interested, I use this on a MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite, and have been using Adobe Audition CC as my editing software.

Since no one has invented a recording system for real people with simple controls ( like an analog Interface on-screen with Play /Rec / FF / Rev / Pause / Arm Track ) then one might as well dig in deep, learn the Industry standard even if it drives you to drink and you lose your hair. We will be a better, faster, smarter world. But, I do love this product!

      Comments about M-Audio M-Track Plus:

I bought this to upgrade from my M-Audio Fast Track. I happen to live about 1/4 mile from the antenna array for a 50,000 watt AM radio station. The Plus does not filter out the RFI sound, making it useless for recording. My Fast Track does not suffer from that problem. I think I would like the Plus, because it has more features, but I'd have to move to find out.

I cannot comment on a recommendation to a friend. If they didn't have an RFI issue I think they would like it. I could not recommend it to a neighbor, however.
