Transform your laptop into a mobile studio with the M-Track Plus from M-Audio. This versatile interface accommodates any input, from an electric guitar to a professional condenser mic-and phantom power is provided. Ideal for on-the-go musicians, the sleek M-Track Plus features durable aluminum case to withstand the rigors of the road. A single USB cable provides both power and a data connection to and from your laptop or desktop computer. The circuit design minimizes laptop battery drain. M-Track Plus also provides MIDI and coaxial S/PDIF connections, to live at the heart of your digital studio.
M-Track is equipped with a versatile array of inputs to provide the best results with any type of audio source. Each channel offers an XLR input and a balanced 1/4" input. The XLR input is designed to work with microphones or other Lo-Z sources. The phantom power switch delivers 48V to the XLR inputs for use with professional condenser microphones. The 1/4" input can be set to receive line level signal, or switched to allow an electric guitar or bass to be plugged directly into the M-Track. The gain knob ensures the proper input level.
Each input channel is also equipped with an insert jack, a professional addition not often found in this class of interface. The insert jack allows studio-grade effects to be used with any input source as you record.
Improved Monitoring for Better Recordings
M-Track offers ultra-low latency monitoring of the input signal-either through the speakers or via headphones. The monitor mix knob adjusts the balance between the direct inputs and the playback from your computer software. In addition, the input signal(s) can be monitored in stereo or mono using the convenient Stereo/Mono switch. This makes it easy to record new parts or add parts to an existing composition. The Headphone output offers its own level control.
In addition to the two audio channels, M-Track also support 16 channels of MIDI data and timing information. The MIDI In and MIDI out jack are compatible with all MIDI equipment.
Multi-color LED metering provides instant visual feedback of the main output levels, as well as the status of various M-Track settings.

The m-audio box is small, and of solid construction. It does seem a bit weird to be laying flat. It may be hard on your cables over time. The unit is powered by your computer through the usb cable. Operation of the box is very simple. A bit limiting of course for size and cost, but excellent for the beginner who is probably not going to record an 8 pc drum set day one. (which btw you're probably not going to do with this. lol) But for guitars, bass and vocals you'll be fine. I'm giving this 4 stars because of the pro tools registration process. It's a complete pain and quite lengthy. Protools Express-(pro tools 10) is limited to 16 tracks and there is a good learning curve for all computer based recording software if you haven't used it before. Don't expect to do tons of layering with this version. The amp plugins provided with pro tools express are pretty hurting in my opinion. But for the price of this version, I guess it's to be expected. All in all it works on my old windows 7 64 bit HP computer. Here are some tips if you don't want to spend 2 days pulling your hair out installing: 1. Download java and quicktime your going to need them for ilok and pro tools to install properly. 2. Turn off any after market firewalls. The windows firewall should be fine on. 3. Keep your email open so you can activate your new website accounts. 4. Plug in your usb cable to your m-audio. 5. Go to m-audio's website and download the drivers for your OS. THEY DON'T COME WITH THE UNIT! (Driver Options: You don't have the "MKII". You should have "SP1" if you've done ANY windows updates. 6. On page 4 of your m-audio manual find your OS and make the appropriate setting on your computer. 7. Make sure you have your headphones or monitors plugged in and turn the "Monitor Mix" dial half way between Direct and USB. Obviously.. turn headphones volume up a bit so you can hear. 7. Go to www.inmusicbrands.com/ptex FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! (The ilok manager has the drivers already. The video will tell you to look for them. You don't need to.) 8) When you finally plugin your usb ilok in, it should lite up. Plug it into another usb plug if the little blue lights don't come on. The "Virtual Instruments" download is long. (1.8g - an hour or more) ***You won't hear anything in pro tools until you arm a track. Youtube has some great tutorials for pro tools.

I purchased this device to go with any number of computers in my set up. The drivers are solid and latency is very good. For the price, I found it to be very versatile and a good value overall with very decent sound quality and midi implementation. Four stars were given as it comes bundled with Pro Tools express which uses the incredibly frustrating I-lock copy protection system. I never got this up and running after a few very annoying hours just registering it with numerous company web sites, very poor instruction, and zero support. Thumbs way down for Avid AND ILOCK for all the hoops I jumped though and hours wasted for nothing. Thumbs up for the solid hardware and drivers. I stuck to using it on my tried and true Sony Acid pro instead.
