Ok, so if you're considering to buy this, that means you've done a lot of research on firewire being better than USB, right? Well, not exactly. Turns out (short story), most PC's motherboards divide their resources (i.e. CPU power) with a ton of other devices on your PC, besides your firewire audio interface. What does this mean? Your firewire device is gonna end up battling for your cpu's resources with a whole bunch o' other stuff that you probably don't even know exists on your PC... but it's there. Translation? Unless you have a supercomputer similar to the ones they use in NASA, you're probly gonna end up with a lot of cracks and pops on your recordings. This thing ended up working even worse than my previous interface, the USB fastrack. I suggest you do some very good research on your PC or Mac's specs before buying this baby. Also, check out the m-audio forums to see what other users have to say regarding this product. You'll be horrified.

Great for beginners

By DJ_NatE

from SFC

I am a DJ currently recording mixes and mixtapes and I got started with this interface. For the money this will get you started in no time. Instalation was a bit tricky but once it started working; besides it being fun I was really happy with it. It is a great Audio Interface for beginners. If you have lots of inputs or various types of devices, you might want something a little bit more "pro". But its great for basic recording, weather your a DJ, a Producer or a gutairest, I think You'll enjoy this interface very much

Very good... but not that good.

By Nepthali77

from Forest Park IL.

I got this interface at my local Gutar Center and a couple of days after using it, I kinda thought that my options were kinda limited here and the price was kinda too much even when I found no problems at all, everything was smooth and excellent. The only thing that I notice is that if you want to record vocals and you want to hear yourself on the headphones, well forget about it because is not gonna happen. So, for $100.00 Dls. more, I upgraded to the Alesis Mutimix12, and it works wonders. So far I have no complaints, the set up was kinda tricky but if you are into computers and audio, you'll figure it out. But in my point of view I recomend Alesis over the firewire solo, and the Alesis is Firewire too.

Excellent interface overall, bad for Ableton DJing

By crystalx

from Brooklyn, NY

I've had this for a while now, since June, and I got it for primarily production use. I DJ as well and switched over to ableton live to do more complicated sets at gigs. With that, you need to cue the tracks and with the interface you should be able to. However this interface only has two outputs and the SPIDF. The headphone jack only outputs the master two outputs, so cueing is pretty much unattainable using this interface. Otherwise its an excellent starter piece. Awesome quality for the price and its extremely portable. I just moved up to the 410 because of the multiple outs. If all you need is two outs and two ins, go for this. You won't regret it.

A perfect start for those into computer recording

By h4xwor

from Houston,TX

I would like to start off by saying THIS PRODUCT ROCKS! Ive been doing computer recording for about 5 years now and this interface has been solid the entire way. Since its firewire, ive never had any problems with latency or delay in my recordings. The device itself is built like a tank as i have dropped it a number of times and it still performs like it did day one. Over the years i have used a variety of recording and guitar amp simulation programs with it (Ex. Pro Tools, Guitar Rig, Amplitube, ACID, Mixcraft) and have always been amazed at the quality of sound that comes from this little device. Ive recorded both mics and guitar inputs with this device and both sound equally good. Pick one up and i promise you would regret it!

Good Starting Place

By Rockdude9k

from Southern California

I bought the Firewire Solo about 9 months ago and have used it probably beyond what it was intended for. I do everything from acoustic band production (including drums) to hard rock and all the way over to classical music for film scores. The good news is it has two inputs one XLR with phantom power and one hi-z for line in's such as guitar's or basses. It has two outputs for monitors as well as spif (which i have never used). The input's and recording's i have done, are fare. Most M-audio interfaces have so so circuitry. However if your a beginner such as i was, and still am. This is a Great place to start. Its not complicated and works with Logic DP and Pro Tools. Its built very sturdy and is great for traveling or recording on the go. I wish it had the combo XLR inputs and Hi-z but it doesn't. However if you want to get your feet wet with recording but know your more into it then the 99 dollar interface this is a great place to start.

Piece of Junk

By Aaron

from Ohio

Worked okay for a few months but then the computer started randomly not recognizing it. You can't plug it in or unplug it while the computer is on, so you have to keep shutting down and rebooting your computer. No matter what I try, it keeps saying that no m-audio device is connected to my computer. Having to reboot my computer TWENTY TIMES is not fun when you were on a roll in the middle of a song. The instruction manual has a customer service number and the hours you can call, but every time I call it NO MATTER WHAT DAY OR TIME it says the office is closed. Stay away from this product at all costs.

Great Interface

By Ace Boogie

from DC

This little piece of equipment was the answer to all my problems. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting good quality in my recordings. I bought this and it gives me clear great sounding vocals. I suggest this for all computer based musicians, not only beginners!!!

Not a bad starter...

By Real 1

from Detroit/Dallas

I have this interface and I can agree that it is very limited...the number of outputs is very low and I wish I had more. It also has no software to really help you mixdown well. Thats why I'm upgrading to the Digidesign Digi 003 Rack Pro Tools LE System today!!!!!!!!
