I'm blown away...

By SkateChatham

from Chatham, Ont

Comments about M-Audio FireWire 410 Computer Recording Interface:

Before I begin, my previous setup left much to be desired. I basically had a Soundblaster card running a mic through a preamp to the in, etc... Recorded without hearing the voice through speakers/went out of sync etc etc... I setup the 410 right out of the box in about 10 minutes, figured out the control panel software in 5 minutes and had it record exactly how I wanted almost instantly. Works perfect on my system, everything stays in sync with both programs I use (Sonar and FL). I am using the 410 to record a single input from a mic and it's great to have 2 headphone outs, one to monitor who I am recording on the mic, and the other for the vocalist. No doubt in my mind that this will raise my productivity level immensely, as well as the increase in quality (going from 16bit to 24bit!) is priceless. I recommend this to anyone who is messing around with an internal soundcard (especially soundblaster). Easy to setup, easy to use and works with all my software.

M-audio (Not The Serious Choice)

By JazzEngineer

from New York

Comments about M-Audio FireWire 410 Computer Recording Interface:

The M-Audio FireWire 410 is great if you are just getting into the world of digital recording, but it is not a professional nor a quality choice. The 410 just about the minimum you would want any interface to do--getting audio onto your computer. The 410's preamps are just about as average as a preamp can get. The preamps give a simple colorless plasticy type sound. If you're very new to the world of digital recording and you are low on cash, the 410 is a great choice though. It offers a decent gain stage and has 2 headphone outs which can eliminate the need for a headphone divider which is not true of most interfaces. The 410 has served me for about 3 months now. It did what it had to do... Wasn't mindblowing, wasn't high quality, it just go two channels of audio onto my computer which was all I needed it for when I bought it. Now for me, it is time to move on. The 410 is worth every penny if you are looking for entry-level interfaces. Served me well, and now I shall move on.

M- Audio 410 Review

By Janina

from Tampa, FL

Comments about M-Audio FireWire 410 Computer Recording Interface:

I have owned this for over a year. I never had any driver, conflicts or compatability problems. I use it plugged into a no-brand firewire PCMCIA firewire card that is in the slot of my Dell laptop running XP. Worked right out of the box. Never had any Windows problems or glitchy recordings. I should say, though, that I've never run more than 2-in and 2-out simultaneously. There's also a bug that occassionally causes the assignable rotary knob to stop functioning during playback until I go into the mixer software and reassign it. I use the FW 410 as my day-to-day "sound card" for general computer audio, especially for transferring and sweetening recordings. In addition, on a few occassions I used it as a front end for live concert recording to my laptop. A nice thing about this unit is it takes DC power in, so you can get an after market external battery pack and run it for hours in the field w/o draining your laptop battery or use it without plugging in to AC if your firewire bus does not supply power (4 pin vs. 6, such as if it's over a PCMCIA card, as mine is). The recordings came out nicely. Not state of the art like every manufacturer of lower priced gear claims they give you but does not, but definitely "prosumer" quality and better than you'd get with a portable DAT, especially if you run it at 24 bits and/or 96khz. Noise levels were low enough to remain below the ambient room noise level at a classical chamber recitals. The mic pres did not overload using large diaphram condensors at a small venue rock concert (but there are louder shows and more sensitive mics out there, so YMMV). Maybe the low end could have had a little more "oomp" but at least it is not sloppy. Of note, the output from my older Akai reel to reel deck was too hot for the FW 410's line stage, although it is a home, not studio, deck. I had to buffer the signal to avoid clipping (don't recall if it was analogue or digital clipping). It has had no problem handling newer consumer equipment like line out from MiniDisc. I can understand why someone would give this box a bad review if it didn't work, but it always has for me, and I believe it delivers very good sound quality for the price point and lots of functionality.

M-Audio FireWire 410 is good

By MRX650

from Daly City, California

Comments about M-Audio FireWire 410 Computer Recording Interface:

I purhcased the 410 to record vinyl onto a hard drive at 24/96 resolution or better. The interface and construction is top notch. The 410 sounds good with a colder sound. I've upgraded the drivers after having compatibility issues with XP and would sometimes lose connectivity or corrupt the file. It's a good step away from Soundblaster variety sound cards. The outputs are great and the price isn't bad. This device is mobile friendly and can be connected to a computer or laptop. Be sure you have firewire ports or hub. I still use it for recording from a computer source and sometimes to run monitors. I've since moved onto recording 24bit onto an Alesis ML-96000 Masterlink. This machine has a longer learning curve but I prefer the warmer more refined and reliable sound of the Masterlink. The 410 is very flexible and for that reason I will keep and use as needed.

Does work with XP Media Center

By The Truth717

from PA

Comments about M-Audio FireWire 410 Computer Recording Interface:

It does work with MCE. XP Pro and XP Media Center are the same core OS. The difference is the additional MCE features. All this is, is an overlay of Windows XP that allows you to use your computer as a media center. There aren't different drivers for MCE and XP because they aren't different operating systems. The problem is likely the firewire drivers that come with XP are inadequate, but that is fixed easily with an update.
