This box is good to have around when you need 1/2 extra mic inputs on a system and all you have left is line level inputs available. It has phantom power to so you can even use it with mics that need the extra voltage.
I just started home recording and I thought this would be a good first buy. The audio quality is pretty, I record using an Sm57 microphone and Audacity and what I'm hearing on my end is decent. The only down side to this product like I read in an earlier review and reassures me in what I am about to say is that the audio buddy's bass response is not exactly spectacular but for the price I don't think it should dissuade from purchasing it if your on a tight budget.
When I first got this little box a year ago I thought it would never stand up to the abuse and destruction like the rest of our equipment goes through but I was wrong. This little box is great for starters but I strongly recommend moving to something a little more upscale like the MOTU HD192 and the M-Audio ProjectMix. We use both as our main units and keep a bunch of AudioBuddys on hand for our bigger rig-ups.
It clips like crazy with drums, vocals aren't very clear, and the bass response is terrible. But then, what can you expect from a dual preamp for eighty bucks? On the bright side, it works okay for a mildly distorted guitar cab.
The best $54 I ever spent. I have a Delta 44 sound card and Cubase LE that came in package with an Alesis USB 6 ch mixer. The combination Delta 44 + Cubase needs a little bust especially for guitar. I used to get some gain from the Cubase's effects suite with acceptable results. I am now using the M-Audio buddy to front my Delta 44. This little pre-am is cute, clean, it has plenty of gain, very well built, it has clip lights to indicate too high of an input level. It perfectly matches the Delta 44 + Cubase LE package. Buy it!
The M-Audio Audio Buddy is a great tool for musicians who are just getting into recording. It is both a direct box and a mic pre amp, so it will help you capture both instruments and vocals. The only down side to this unit is the quality at which it outputs Bass levels. For the price though, it can't be beat.
